Original post: August 18, 2010; Updated September 25, 2010 with additional recall information

The list of recalled brands posted below will be updated as additional distributors, wholesalers, retailers and food service operators release their recall notices. Please also check FDA's searchable database for egg recalls, which is being updated regularly.

Eggs recalled on August 13th were packed in in varying sizes of cartons (6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons, 18-egg cartons) with Julian dates ranging from 136 to 225 and plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946. Dates and codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton. The plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. The Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P-1946 223.

Wright County Egg expanded its recall on August 18th to include additional eggs from plant numbers 1720 and 1942. The recalled eggs were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and food service companies in California, Arizona, Missouri, Minnesota, Texas, Georgia, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, Illinois, Utah, Nebraska, Arkansas, Wisconsin and Oklahoma for redistribution nationwide. The eggs included in this expanded recall were packed in varying sizes of cartons (6, 12 and 18) in addition to loose eggs for institutional use and repackaging. Julian dates range from 136 to 229.

Walmart released the following statement on August 21st:
“Customer safety is a top priority at Walmart and Sam’s Club and that includes offering safe, high quality foods at the most affordable prices. We are concerned about the nationwide Salmonella outbreak linked to shell eggs and are monitoring this situation very closely.

“Neither Walmart’s Great Value brand nor Sam’s Club eggs are impacted by the recall announced earlier by Wright County Eggs.

“Four of Walmart’s egg suppliers, Sparboe Farms, Dean Foods, Hillandale Farms and Cal-Maine Foods, announced recalls of eggs that were sourced from or linked to Wright County Eggs. As soon as we have been notified, we have promptly pulled the eggs from our stores’ shelves. These recalls have affected nearly 630 stores in 20 states (CO, MT, ND, SD, NE, WI, MN, MO, NM, TX, IL, IN, IA, KY, NY, OH, PA, WV, MI and WY).

“We continue to work with our suppliers to monitor the situation and will take the appropriate steps to remove affected products from our store shelves. Customers who suspect they may have eggs associated with the recall are encouraged to return the product to their local store for verification.”

  1. Thank you for this concise, updated list for this egg recall. I have been to government and news sites that didn't have all the information in one understandable entry. I tweeted this to my peeps. Thank you.

  2. Hi and Thank You for all the info! I started getting real sick after an egg sandwich yesterday morning. I don't know that it may or may not be related...However, on nightly news I heard the report regarding egg's. I started trying to research. I had in fact eaten eggs from Safeway, (Lucerne brand) in Williams, Arizona but it was stamped Aug 16 PK13 P1711 205. How do you go about finding out the possibilities and where is P1711 located and could that be involved as well? As a percausion, prudent to throw out the remaining egg's as well as the Fresh muffins & Bread made in the recipt with those eggs.

    Thanks

  3. @Mary.- Thanks for spreading this information beyond my usual readership.

@Kevin.- I looked up the plant number on the USDA web site. P-1711 is not part of this recall. Your eggs came from Hickman's Egg Ranch in Maricopa, Arizona (see http://apps.ams.usda.gov/plantbook/Query_Pages/plant_results.asp). All of the plants listed in the two recall notices are located in Iowa (Dows, Clarion and Galt). You do not need to throw out the remaining eggs, the muffins or the bread!

  4. Dutch Farms.... How does a plant, with controls in place, accidentally use packaging that they shouldn't even have that much of? As a business, why would they have that much packaging stock at a plant that only does a small amount of work for them?

  5. @Anonymous.-Two good questions for which I have no answers. I expect that we haven't heard the last of that story.

  6. Phyllis, I think its only fair to inform you of two things....Dutch Farms and Boomsma's are not one in the same as you have listed on your site. Boomsma's and Dutch Farms have not been connected since the 80's. The owner of Dutch Farms is named Boomsma, but not associated with the brand. In respects to the question on a plant accidentally using packaging they shouldn't have access to, that is a very good question and I'm sure one the people at Dutch Farms would like an answer to with all this undue press.

  7. @Anonymous.- Thank you for that correction. I have corrected my list of brands to show Boomsma as a separate item.

  8. Wondering about Market Pantry (Target Brand) P-1906203. They were all hard boiled too. Woke up sick today and wondering if its the eggs I ate the last two days or just being around my kid and other kids yesterday? Just wondering if these are on the list?

  9. @Ron.- I have not seen any mention of Market Pantry (I have been watching the Target recall page for news and haven't found anything there yet, either). The plant number P-1906 identifies the eggs as coming from Sparboe Agricultural Corporation in Britt, Iowa (http://apps.ams.usda.gov/plantbook/Query_Pages/plant_results.asp). Hard-boiling should kill any Salmonella that is inside the eggs.

  10. I appreciate it. Guessing Iowa is there Corporate Office. Carton says "Packed By or For Sparboe Farms" PO Box 309 Litchfield, MN. Also says P-1173 LA-356 MN-9 K-678 and N-2708. The stamp is what said the P-1906203. Thanks

  11. @Ron.- I have just spotted a Walmart press release mentioning a recall of Sparboe Farms eggs. They apparently were supplied by Wright County Egg. I shall be updating this consolidated post shortly.

  12. Has anyone heard of Wagon Trail Farmers' eggs? These were purchased at Walmart recently. Thanks. Oh, in Oklahoma.

  13. @Anonymous.- I have not seen any mention of Wagon Trail Farmers' eggs having been recalled, either on the Walmart site or elsewhere.

  14. I have Market Pantry eggs from Sparboe Farms, bought in Minnesota, P-1906.

Based on everything I've searched, they should be fine, but now Wal-Mart goes and makes that vague mention.... Would that mean only Sparboe eggs from Wal-Mart would be affected?

  15. I'm confused, Farm Fresh Egglands' best. Are they Farm Fresh or Egglands best? Are they part of the recall? I find nothing on them.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Brett Favre.- I am told by Target that Market Pantry eggs have not been recalled. I asked them specifically about Sparboe Farms, but have not yet had a reply. I also have queried Walmart, but have not yet received an answer. I think that a lot of the retailers are still feeling their way through this recall situation.

  19. Thanks for this post, and specifically the link to the USDA database for plant numbers. I am in AZ, and Hickman Farms is a huge local supplier. In my efforts to eat more locally, I have been wondering which store brands are really Hickman eggs in disguise. :)

  20. Thank you about the info regarding Wagon Trail Farmers' eggs........ This salmonella outbreak is really BIG! My two year old son was hospitalized for 3 weeks and lived on popsicles until the salmonella finally was beaten by antibiotics. He was in isolation as the local Health Dept. was afraid it would spread and be contagious. I wonder if this strain is also contagious?

Thank you again for your hard work!

  21. I keep seeing "Market Pantry brand at Target is fine" but I didn't want to risk food poisoning (or my life) to eat a delicious 9-cent egg.

After reading your report, I see a few things that make me think perhaps Target isn't taking this as seriously as they should:

    1) My "Market Pantry" eggs are produced by/for Sparboe, which was listed as being supplied by Wright County.

    2) Sure enough, the plant number listed on the carton is P-1951... isn't this the same plant as the NuCal recalled eggs are coming from?

So if Sparboe is being recalled by WalMart and P-1951 is being recalled by NuCal... then why is Target saying my P-1951 eggs from Sparboe are definitely fine??

  22. I second the Target Market Pantry suspicion... have been in intestine hell for a few days... but I don't have the package anymore to check the stamp : (

  23. @EVERYBODY: I am pursuing the possibility that at least some of Target's Market Pantry eggs may have originated from one of the Wright County Egg, NuCal or Hillandale plants that are listed in the recall notices. If you have a carton of Target Market Pantry eggs or Sparboe eggs in your refrigerator, please email me the Plant ID# and the Julian date code that is stamped on the package. If you can, a digital picture would be very helpful. I am especially interested in cartons stamped with P1026, P1413, P1946, P1720, P1942, P1686, P1951, P1091, P1860 or P1663.

Please email me directly at phyllisentis@gmail.com

Lets work together to solve this traceback faster than FDA.

  24. I was very sick yesterday and had consumed eggs bought from Walmart in central Indiana early the prior day. Sunny Farms marked 222 P1207 15. These are from Hillandale in IA. May want to take a look at that plant.

  25. @Keith.- That's interesting, because the plant ID P1207 belongs to Ohio Fresh Eggs in Mount Victory, OH (http://apps.ams.usda.gov/plantbook/Query_Pages/plant_results.asp). Hillandale has just two Iowa locations (P1860 and P1663), both of which were mentioned in the company's recall notice.

  26. Phyllis, This box of 18 eggs is labled "Sunny Farms". On the back of the hinge of the box it says Packed for Hillandale Farms Crown Ohio; West Union IA. Just want to make sure this is not a source that is being overlooked.

Thank you for the prompt response.

  27. @Keith.- I think that your question highlights one of the big problems that consumers and regulators face with this recall; namely, multiple brands cross labeled and repacked by intermediates. This already is huge, and is going to grow to astronomical proportions.

  29. Please remove Olympia Valley from your list of recalled eggs. They have not been recalled and were simply mentioned in an erroneous report made by a store employee. Please check current information from Alaska officials.

  30. Thank you for the heads-up. I have removed Olympia Valley from the list.

  31. I found this information in a report this morning.

DeCoster's Wright County Egg is already facing at least two lawsuits related to the egg recall. One is from food distributor Dutch Farms, which says the company used unauthorized cartons to package and sell eggs under its brand without its knowledge.

  32. Hi Phyllis, I just read thru your site & your comment on 8/21 caught my eye as I was ready to boil a few eggs you asked for photos of. Mine aren't from Target though are Nulaid Jumbo Grade A distributed ny NUCAL Foods, Ripon,Ca. with the plant # P1686. Sending an email with photos.

  33. ok so one of the supposedly "safe" eggs had this to say "Brookshire's Food & Pharmacy:- "Eggs at Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores are NOT included in the recent recall involving a producer in Iowa. All our eggs are supplied by Pilgrim’s Pride in Pittsburg, Texas, and Cal-Maine Foods in Jackson, Miss."
and yet one of the companies on the recall list "Cal-Maine Foods, Inc:- Cal-Maine received 32 truckloads of recalled eggs (approximately 800,000 dozen eggs) from "an Iowa producer." Cal-Maine, based in Jackson, MS, sells shell eggs in approximately 29 states across the southwestern, southeastern, mid-western and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.

    seriously? what dummy overlooked that>?

  34. oo i would also like to point out that i find it amusing that the extremely lofty and healthy trader joes gets their eggs from exactly the same places that the much maligned and evil wal-mart get their eggs from ;)

  35. About Brookshire's and Super 1 Foods: The "not included" notices posted on the Brookshire's and Super 1 Foods web pages were issued before the Cal-Maine news release was published.

  36. Ok.... All these eggs have been out and about for sometime before they were caught. Now in that time frame how many Company's have bought these eggs and used them and are sitting on shelves weighting for victims to by them. Are Famous amos cookies or M&M Cookies use these eggs? These company's out there now days seem to buy the cheapest items to make more profits. I think the inspections that are required from the government are not good enough. Thank GOD our kids are out of school during this recall. For I am sure the school systems buy from them. I will probably newer buy another dozen of eggs as long as I love. The best part is the company has been in trouble in the past and were just fined and the government pockets the money and onward the production goes. The plant should be SHUT DOWN and all those birds put down. I think the video says it all. Maybe they should have cameras should be put in all types of plants from dairy. pigs.chickens. etc.....

  37. Great and comprehensive, detailed info here.
How to know if the eggs purchased are part of this recall after the original carton was discarded. Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  38. If in doubt throw them out. I wouldn't risk it over a $2 doz. of eggs. Our news showed that the dollar tree is still selling them even after they were told to toss them out. Now the stores want you to bring them back for a refund. That should be a risk for the store to bring back into the store. The infection is in the chicken and which in return is in the shell and the eggs. I do think a list of products and company's should have to come forward if the eggs were put into consumer on the shelf as in bread/ buns. cookies' pizza dough etc... And also 3 months off eggs were recalled. How do we know if it was longer than that? And how often do the do quality checks? Not often enough I would have to say.And 85% of chicken that you buy in the store is not safe to eat. All my facts are from the pro's on the news cast. What people do to screw other people over to make money. I will not eat peanut butter nor buy cheap ass hamburger after seeing sick cow that die are sent threw to pressing and even cows that have had meds are sent threw. And it takes a worker to take video to get the public's attention. There are dairy's that skip the homogenized there milk so they can save money and get more out the door. I guess I could go on for hours but am fed up with the way stuff is handed to consumers. Now eggs will double because it's gonna cost them more to fix the problem and maintain the waste the birds leave behind. That is the root cause of this whole egg recall And to make up for there stupid mistakes that caused them the loss. When stuff like that happens the government should pass a law stating you can not raise your product costs to make up for you loss by setting a time frame on no price hikes. .Damn near wrote a book didn't I lol Just be safe on choices that are made.

    Try Organic Valley Eggs
They Are Safe, Nutritious and Not Affected by the Egg Recall ****Not always true*** Test were done and organic food does NOT mean it is any better or not free of harm Just paying more $$$$ for the Organic header*****

  40. @Anonymous who posted August 24, 2010 1:24 AM: If you have tossed the carton and don't remember the brand, there is no way to know whether or not the eggs have been recalled from looking at the individual eggs. The only exception would be if you purchased a "premium" brand with a stamp on each individual egg.

The person who replied "If in doubt throw them out" is 100% correct.

@Anonymous who posted August 24, 2010 2:44 AM. I agree that organic does not guarantee safety. I am simply mirroring the information that this company is not selling eggs from other suppliers outside their own group.

  41. I bought Market Pantry eggs last week and have been sick since eating them on Saturday. The number is P1906213. I do not have the carton any longer.

  42. Thank you so much for this invaluable service. Nowhere else can we find such a well coordinated, organized report of eggs involved in this recall.
I also appreciate the final section on eggs NOT involved in the recall, and I pray we can trust these vendors.
During the pet food recall, a few years ago, I lost a dear cat after feeding him a can of food that had not been recalled. One week after feeding him the food, that can WAS RECALLED, but too late to be of help to him. The FDA WAS/IS EXTREMELY SLOW, often several weeks late, in announcing recalls. It was too late for my dear cat who developed kidney failure from the toxins in the food. I came to depend on more dedicated and vigilant, websites like yours to protect my other pets.
I will monitor your site to make sure the vendors who CLAIM their eggs are NOT involved, do not show up later on the recall list.
I realize it may be difficult to trace the origin of their eggs, due to a seriously deficient tracking system. Hopefully that can be remedied in the future. Thank you so much again for the wonderful job you are doing, and bless you.

  43. @Anonymous who posted August 25, 2010 10:34 AM. Even though you do not have any eggs left, please contact your state health department or FDA and report your illness, together with the information on where you bought the eggs and the P1906213 number that was on the carton. Every bit of information helps in these traceback investigations.

@Anonymous who posted August 25, 2010 9:43 PM. Thank you for your kind comments. I am doing my best to keep up with the recall information, and will continue to update this post as more information is released. I appreciate the time you took to post your remarks.
