  • Allergy Alert (Update): Barry Callebaut USA LLC expands its earlier recall of Kroger Value Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips, 12 oz. to include all Best By dates ending in 2012, because the product may contain undeclared milk. The recalled Chocolate Chips were sold in Kroger-owned stores, including Kroger stores nation-wide; and Dillon’s and Gerbes stores in Kansas and Missouri; Baker’s stores in Nebraska; Jay C, Hilander, Owen’s, Pay Less and Scott’s stores in Illinois and Indiana; Fred Meyer, Fry’s, King Soopers, Smith’s, City Market, Foods Co., and Food 4 Less stores in California, Nevada, Nebraska, New Mexico, Illinois and Indiana (Chicago area). Several consumer complaints have been received.
  • Food Safety Recall: Price Chopper advises its customers that AdvancePierre Foods has recalled Fast Fixin' Popcorn Chicken, 26 oz. (UPC 75901-33613) after receiving two consumer complaints of small pieces of plastic in the product.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Safety Update (Philippines): The Department of Health has lifted its ban on Chinese infant formula and other milk products from China. The ban was imposed on 23 September 2008 following confirmation of melamine in infant formula and milk products manufactured in China.
  • Food Safety Alert (Taiwan): Three shipments of US beef were removed from retail sale in Taiwan after they were found to contain Paylean, a drug used to promote leanness in animals raised for meat. Taiwan, China and the European Union ban the use of Paylean because of possible human health risks, according to the report posted by Channelnewsasia.com; however, use of Paylean is legal in the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil and more than 20 other countries.
  • Herbal Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): The Department of Health advises the public not to consume the Chinese herbal powder Ramulus Cinnamomi (brand name 百草牌; batch #B20100513), wholesaled by Dynamic Medical Company, as it is contaminated with aconitum alkaloids. Dynamic Medical is recalling the powder, which was manufactured in China.

  • Allergy Alert: Crave Foods (Los Angeles, CA) recalls Crave Pies Chicken Mushroom Pie (6-lb cases containing 12 individual 4-oz packages), because the product contains undeclared monosodium glutamate (MSG). The recalled pies were produced between September 2010 and December 2010 and shipped to distribution centers in California and New York for further retail distribution.
  • Food Safety Recall: Sprouters Northwest, Inc. (Kent, WA) recalls all of its clover sprout and and clover mixed sprout products, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall was initiated after clover sprouts produced by Sprouters Northwest were linked to four cases of Salmonella Newport infections in Washington State and two cases in Oregon. The recalled sprouts were distributed to wholesalers, grocery stores – including QFC and Fred Meyer stores – and restaurants in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and British Columbia.
  • Food Recall: Price Chopper recalls Olivio Premium Spread, 15-ounce tub because droplets of water can surface in the container and may promote mold growth.
  • Food Recall: Food City recalls Food City Fat Free Yogurt, 32 oz (Exp. date 01/21/2011). No reason was given for the recall.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: The Ritedose Corporation recalls 0.083% Albuterol Sulfate Inhalation Solution, 3mL (25, 30, 60 unit dose vials), because the 2.5mg/3mL single use vials are embossed with the wrong concentration and represent a health hazard. The recalled products were distributed across the USA and in Puerto Rico.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. recalls 6 lots of Acetadote® (acetylcysteine) Injection after particulate matter was found in a small number of vials of the injectable pharmaceutical product.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Drive Total Energy recalls Rock Hard Extreme and Passion Coffee dietary supplements after FDA finds undeclared sulfoaildenafil (an analogue of sildenafil) in the product.
  • Dietary Supplement Recall: Giant Eagle recalls Natures Basket Fiber Complex, 100-ct (all lots) due to mislabelling.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Tico's Mexican Foods, Inc. (Denver, CO) that a September 2010 inspection revealed serious deviations from the Seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) Regulation.


Canada

  • Allergy Alert (December 18th): Seoul Trading Corporation recalls Choripdong brand frozen dumplings (810g packages; imported from Korea; all date codes), because the dumplings contain undeclared egg. The recalled dumplings are known to have been distributed in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario (Toronto), and may have been sold nationwide.
  • Allergy Alert (December 22nd): Federated Co-operatives Ltd. (Saskatoon, SK) recalls all lot codes of Quaker brand Chewy Granola Bars Value Pack (14 bars; 364g), because the packs may contain Quaker brand Dipps granola bars that contain peanuts. The affected packs were previously recalled on November 24th, but may have been distributed after the original recall through Co-op retail stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert (December 22nd): Heng Hing Dry Seafood Inc. recalls Fei Dun Chocolates (all best before dates), because the product contains undeclared peanuts.
  • Allergy Alert (December 22nd): CFIA advises consumers that the importer has recalled VSC Chocolats Brandy Beans Brandy Liqueur Chocolates (200g package; made in Germany; lot code L7058 J8 and L7157 J8), because the product may contain undeclared milk. The recalled chocolates were distributed across Canada.
  • Allergy Alert (December 24th): Brand Castle LLC (Chicago, IL) recalls Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats Holiday Village Kit (666g package; all best before dates), because the product contains undeclared egg. The kits, which were imported from the USA, are known to have been distributed in Michael's, Winners and HomeSense stores across Canada, and may also have been sold in other stores.
  • Allergy Alert (December 27th): Thrifty Foods Broadmead (Victoria, BC) recalls in-store baked Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, incorrectly labelled as Chocolate Chip Cookies (Best Before 29 DE 10).
  • Food Safety Recall (December 21st): Réal Veer Inc. (Sainte-Claire, QC) recalls raw shell eggs, imported from the USA (lot code SEA-1024796; Best before JAN-18-11) because the eggs may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled eggs were distributed in the province of Québec.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 21st): Yie Ming (Canada) Ltd., recalls Yu Yuan brand vacuum packed Sweet Glutinous Corn (all lot codes), imported from China, because the product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled product was sold in British Columbia.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 22nd): McCormick Canada recalls certain lot codes of Club House One Step Lemon and Herbs Seasoning, Club House Sesame Seeds, Sysco Sesame Seeds and Trade East Sesame Seeds, because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 24th): Whole Foods Market (Toronto, ON) recalls Rolf's Patisserie brand and Whole Foods Market brand Ginger Bread Houses, imported from the USA, because the products may be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus. The recalled ginger bread houses were sold in Whole Foods stores in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 27th): J & D Produce Inc. (Texas, USA) recalls Little Bear brand fresh greens (shipped to Canada between November 30th and December 7th, inclusive), because the fresh greens may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled produce items were distributed to grocery stores (including Maxi in Montreal, QC) and may have been sold nationwide.   • Food Safety Recall: River Ranch (Salinas, CA) recalls Whole Head Romaine Lettuce (24 count, bulk packed; Lot code 13816 291, with no individual labeling), because the lettuce may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled Romaine lettuce was distributed to multiple states, including California (follow live link for California distribution list) and New York.
  • Food Safety Recall: California Department of Public Health has posted a list of California retail grocers, restaurants and food service locations that were supplied with shell eggs recalled by Cal-Maine Foods, Inc.
  • Food Safety Recall: California Department of Public Health has posted a list of California retail grocers that were supplied with fresh cilantro (Lot #6127R) recalled by EpicVeg, Inc. The recalled cilantro bundles have a white twist tie with black lettering spelling the word "Cilantro" and were available for purchase between October 21st and October 23rd.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Fukuda Trading Co. Ltd. recalls Languly Vanilla Cream Sandwich Langue De Chat Cookies, 132g and Languly Chocolate Cream Sandwich Langue De Chat Cookies, 132g because the cookies contain undeclared egg. One person has reported an allergic reaction associated with consumption of these cookies. The recalled Languly cookies were distributed in British Columbia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Pitt Meadows Meat Packers (Pitt Meadows, BC) recalls beef trims that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns the public not to consume certain ground beef, curry beef, beef stew, ground lamb and ground beef patty products from several stores in British Columbia (follow live link for details) that are affected by the Pitt Meadows recall.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Give Them Hope is withdrawing 120g packs of chocolate coated peanuts and packs of mixed nuts, due to the presence of undeclared peanuts and undeclared nuts, in some of their Dublin Simon Community charity packaged confectionery.
  • Food Withdrawal (Finland): Atria Finland Ltd. withdraws four date codes of porkkanalaatikossa (400g package), because of a labeling error. The top of the package incorrectly shows the product as being lactose-free. This product does not represent a health hazard, but consumption of the contents by lactose-intolerant individuals may cause discomfort.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1522): Listeria monocytogenes in bio goat's cheese with bacon from Belgium; distributed to Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1523): Residue level above MRL for sulfadimethoxine in swine caracasses from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1524): Dicofol in industrial fresh apples from Romania; distributed to Germany, Poland and Romania.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1525): Salmonella spp. in clams (Tapes) from Italy; distributed to Germany and Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1526): Aflatoxins in spiced mixture from India; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2010.1527): Excess vitamin B9 - folic acid in food supplements from the United Kingdom; distributed to Ireland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1528): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis (15 larvea) of chilled hake (Merluccius merluccius) from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1529): Aflatoxins in basmati rice from Italy; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1531): Aflatoxins in fig paste from Turkey; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1532): Salmonella spp. in sausages from Germany; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1533 and #2010.1534): Ivermectin unauthorised in corned beef from Brazil; distributed to the United Kingdom.

  • Proprietary Chinese Medicine Recall (Hong Kong): Hong Kong Wah Sheng Medical Company Limited is ordered to recall the topical proprietary Chinese medicine called Wujigao, after the Department of Health detects a trace amount of salicylic acid in the product.
  • Proprietary Chinese Medicine Recall (Hong Kong): Wah Fai Hong, a licensed Chinese medicine wholesaler is instructed to recall Once OK Beriberi Lotion, manufactured by Hong Kong Chung Shun Medicine Manufactory, after the product is found to contain Benzoic acid.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): M Z Holdings Ltd. recalls Mayur Brand Tapioca Chips Round Fried and Mayur Brand Tapioca Slices (Masala) Fried (200g, Batch No. MZ-1; Best Before 10/11/2010; imported from India), because these products have been found to contain unacceptable levels of substances that can release cyanide when digested and may pose a risk to human health. The products displaying this batch number should not be consumed. The products are sold in Indian retail outlets in Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North and Auckland.

United States
  • Food Safety Recall: Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. recalls approximately 24,000 dozen eggs, which where purchased from Ohio Fresh Eggs, LLC (Croton, OH) and re-packaged at Cal-Maine's Green Forest, Arkansas facility between October 9th and October 12th, 2010. Cal-Maine initiated the recall immediately after learning that the Ohio Fresh Egg facility had a routine environmental sample that tested positive for Salmonella Enteritidis. The recalled eggs are labeled with Plant Number 1457 and a Julian Date of 282, 284 or 285, and were distributed under the Sunny Meadow, Springfield Grocer, and James Farm brands to food wholesalers and retailers in Arkansas, California, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.
  • Food Safety Recall: APPA Fine Foods (Corona, CA) recalls approximately 7,325 pounds of Spicy Thai Style Pasta Salad, 12 oz. (Est. No. P-21030; Use by Oct 31 or Nov. 1-6, 2010) because they contain cilantro that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled pasta salad was sold to Trader Joe's for distribution in the retailer's California stores. In addition, the product was available in one Trader Joe's location each in Tucson, Arizona and in Reno and Carson City, Nevada.
  • Food Safety Recall: Trader Joe's alerts its customers to a recall of Cilantro Dressing (sell by 2/9/2011), Spicy Peanut Vinaigrette (sell by 1/9/2011), Cilantro Pecan Dip (sell by 11/20/2010 and 11/24/2010) and Spicy Thai Pasta Salad (sell by 10/30/2010 through 11/6/2010). The cilantro ingredient in these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The Pasta Salad was sold in California stores only. The Cilantro Pecan Dip was sold in Trader Joe's stores in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. The Cilantro Dressing and the Vinaigrette were available in all Trader Joe's, nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall (Retail Distribution): USDA posts retail distribution list for canned meat and poultry products that were recalled by Eickman's Processing due to underprocessing. The recalled products were distributed to retailers in Illinois, only.
  • Food Safety Recall: Baugher Enterprise, Inc. (Westminster, MD), is recalling all production of Baugher's Apple Cider because it may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7. The recalled cider is sold in gallon and one-half gallon plastic jugs in retail stores in Maryland and the Gettysburg area of Pennsylvania. Consumption of the recalled product may be linked to a cluster of seven E. coli O157:H7 infections; three victims have been hospitalized.
  • Food Safety Recall: Publix advises customers that Abbott Nutrition has recalled Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up™ powdered infant formula (12.3 oz cans, Lot No. 92957RB70). This product was involved in the original recall, but was released inadvertently by Abbott for sale.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Recall: Giant Food Stores advises customers that the manufacturer has recalled Chlor-Trimeton Allergy 12 Hour ER Tablets (UPC 4110080735), after stability test results were determined to be out of specification.
  • Cosmetic Product Safety Advisory: Rhode Island Department of Health advises the public that decorative contact lenses being sold without prescription may produce corneal abrasions and temporary vision impairment. The Department of Health has confiscated decorative contact lenses from retail locations that were selling the product without a prescription.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Marathon Foods recalls Anthos sultanas (350g; all best before dates between 3 July 2011 and 9 February 2010), because they contain undeclared sulphur dioxide.
  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): Beechvale Waters expands its earlier recall to include some 19 liter plastic containers for water dispensers, due to possible presence of E. coli. The recalled bottled water originated in the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): The Food Safety Authority of Ireland advises the public that a product recall is being carried out on all batches of Sokolów Home Black Pudding Sausage and Grill Black Pudding Sausage, due to the detection of high levels of Listeria monocytogenes in the products. The recalled products were imported from Poland and distributed to two wholesalers in Ireland.
  • Allergy Alert Safety Notification (EU #2010.1512): Undeclared fish in frozen paella from Sweden; distributed to the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1513): Aflatoxins in ginger from Nigeria, via Germany; distributed to Poland.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Safety Alert (Saudi Arabia): Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) warns that Nab'a Potable Water, produced by Nab'a Health Potable Water Plant of Tabuk and Al Khalidiyah Potable Water, produced by Al Khalidiyah Water Plant in Al Kharj province have exceeded the maximum permitted level of bromate. SFDA has requested that steps be taken to halt production at both plants and to recall the products from the market until the problem has been rectified.

United States
  • San Diego County, CA. October 18-20: The County issued Boil Water Orders for the Warner Unified School District and Camp Barrett on October 18th after coliforms were found in their drinking water systems. The Warner Order was lifted on October 20th.
  • Springfield, IL. October 19th: The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is advising residents who obtain their drinking water from private wells in the Marquette Heights (Tazewell County) area to test their water for possible groundwater contamination. Routine testing of Marquette Heights community water supply wells by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) indicates that 1,1,1-trichloroethane could be present in the area’s private wells.
  • Carlsbad, CA. October 20th: Signs warning of sewage contamination are posted at Carlsbad State Beach access points from 1,000 feet north and south of Encina Creek Outlet as a result of a 2,310 gallon sewage spill from a main at 6200 Avenida Encinas in Carlsbad.



Canada
  • Ottawa, ON. October 19th: The Government of Canada has appealed to industry members to voluntarily stop production, importation and sale of children's jewelery made with cadmium or cadmium-containing materials.


Europe
  • West Fife, UK. October 19th: Four children who attend a West Fife nursery have been confirmed to be suffering from a Salmonella Group B infection. None of the children are seriously ill. The source of the infections has not yet been found.
  • Tabasalu, Estonia. October 19th: Thirteen children and one assistant teacher at a Tabasalu nursery school have been infected with Salmonella in this small town outside of Tallinn. Five of the children were hospitalized. It is thought that the source of the infections may have been a batch of scrambled eggs.
  • Reykjavik, Iceland. October 20th: A Lufthansa flight on its way from New York to Munich landed in Iceland early Wednesday to disembark five passengers who were reportedly suffering from food poisoning. The plane took off 3 1/2 hours later, leaving the sick passengers behind.
  • Gorlovka, Russia. October 20th: Four people – three children and a 30-year old woman – were treated for food poisoning in an emergency room after eating cake purchased at a Gorlovka store.
  • Glasgow, Scotland. October 21st: A ward at Gartnavel Hospital remains closed following the deaths of two patients suffering from Clostridium difficile. Five other patients on the ward at Gartnavel General Hospital have been diagnosed with the same microbe.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Puducherry, India. October 15th: Twenty students at a government higher secondary school complained of nausea shortly after drinking milk supplied under a free breakfast program. It was alleged that a lizard had fallen into the milk.
  • Guangxi, China. October 16th: Two camellia oil firms in China's Guangxi – Molaoye Food Co. Ltd. and Jinchawang Oil Co. Ltd. – were ordered to suspend production after their products were found to contain excessive benzo(a)pyrene. The companies are working to recall the questionable products.
  • Taiwan. October 18th: On September 30, 2010, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) announced an imported case of shigellosis. The is a 40-year-old male who travelled to Changsha City, Hunan Province, China with a tour group from September 16 to 23. On September 20, the case subsequently developed symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Three other members of the tour group had symptoms of diarrhea during the trip. Epidemiological investigations point to drinks consumed during the trip as a possible source of the infections.
  • Henan, China. October 18th: Twelve members of a family were diagnosed with thallium poisoning. Four of the victims are in critical condition. Tainted baking soda is suspected as the source of the poisoning. The victims are undergoing dialysis to help remove the thallium from their blood.
  • Beijing, China. October 18th: The government has released a draft regulation that would require manufacturers of baby formula in China to test each batch of raw materials and their finished products for melamine.
  • Hong Kong. October 18th: The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) has conducted a targeted surveillance on the microbiological quality of Chinese cold dishes to assess the safety of these food items. The CFS announced that the test results were all satisfactory.
  • Hong Kong. October 18th: The Department of Health reminds the public not to buy or consume unlabeled slimming products from the Internet as they may contain undeclared western medicines dangerous to health.
  • Nepal. October 20th: Two persons have died of diarrhea in the Dang district and dozens more are suffering from diarrhea that started during the Dashain festival. Two people also have died in the Dolakha district and more than 30 have developed diarrhea.
  • Sangli, India. October 20th: Two people died of food poisoning after they consumed chapattis made of bajra flour that was mixed with pesticides.
  • Awutu Bawjiase, Ghana. October 20th: The Awutu Bawjiase Health Centre has recorded 16 cases of diarrhea in the past two weeks.
  • Beijing, China. October 21st: The poor quality of natural water resources and devastating pollution threaten the safety of drinking water for millions of inhabitants across vast areas of rural China, according to a report released by the Ministry of Water Resources and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
  • Dhaka, Bangladesh. October 21st: In the past week, thousands of cases of diarrhea were admitted to the International Center for Diarrhea Disease and Research in Dhaka. Approximately 500 patients suffering from severe diarrhea are being seen daily.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Berbice, Guyana. October 18th: Nearly 100 guests at a retreat hosted by the 'B' Division Community Policing Group were hospitalized with food poisoning soon after eating lunch.
  • Spoiled meat, which was prepared as part of the meal, is suspected to be the cause of the poisoning. Five people are in custody.
  • Haiti. October 21st: At least 40 people have died in the northern and eastern parts of Haiti as a result of a diarrhea outbreak. More than 200 people have been suffering from diarrhea, the source of which is not yet known.
