United States
  • Allergy Alert: Cinderella Sweets (Woodmere, NY) recalls Shabtai Gourmet Brand Cindy's Scrumptious Chocolate Chip Pound Cake, 16 oz (All lots; Kosher for Passover), because the product ingredient list indicates egg in the contents, while the package is labeled "Egg Free."

  • Allergy Alert: Bariatric Advantage, a division of Catalina Lifesciences (Irvine, CA) recalls Chewable Multi Formula High in Vitamins A, D, E & K (Chocolate Mint Truffle flavor; single tablet, 60-tablet, and 180 tablet sizes; Lot #411499, 411499B and 411499D; Expiration date 5/24/2012) because the tablets contain undeclared milk protein.

  • Food Safety Recall: TGF Production LLC (Brooklyn, NY) recalls Herring Fish in Salt Water (1,300g/2.86-lb round plastic container; Code #20.02.11 PVI44AMIC2; Product of Russia), because the herring was not properly eviscerated prior to processing, and may be contaminated with spores of Clostridium botulinum. The recalled product was sold nationally.

  • Food Recall: Bacardi USA recalls Martini and Rossi Asti Spumante, 1.5-liter bottles (Lot codes: L10236, L10237, L10238, L10239, L10242, L10243, L10244, L10278, L10279, L10281, L10284, L10285, and L10321), after the company received reports of bursting bottles.

  • FDA Enforcement Action: FDA and Ocean Harvest Inc. (San Diego, CA) have entered into a consent decree of permanent injunction. The consent decree restrains Ocean Harvest from preparing, packing, or distributing seafood until the company complies with the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations. The company also cannot prepare, pack or distribute seafood until it complies with the FDA’s current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations.

  • Outbreak Alert: Residents and employees at Lemoore Naval Air Station (California) are being told not to drink the base's water after 29 people became ill with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. at the base.

  • Outbreak Alert: Four people have contracted E. coli after visiting the Everett's Animal Farm at Forest Park in Snohomish County, Washington.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: Au Délices de la Plaine (Terrebonne, QC) recalls - and warns the public not to consume - refrigerated spaghetti sauce sold by the company in 500-mL glass jars (all product dated up to and including 9 juin 2011), because the product may not be safe for consumption.

  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: MGA Entertainment of Van Nuys, California recalls Bratz Makeup Design Sketch Book (Batch codes BV6997 and BV7040; Expiration 9/2012), because the eye shadow makeup in the Sketch Book may be contaminated with Staphylococcus warneri and Staphylococcus intermedius. The recalled product was sold from February 2011 to May 2011 at Toys R Us stores across Canada.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Iceland Foods Ltd. recalls Iceland Beef in Oyster Sauce Noodle Bowl (550g; Best before 11.09.2012), due to the presence of undeclared peanut, fish and shellfish, as the result of a packaging error.

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Iceland Foods Ltd. recalls Iceland's Beef Oyster Sauce Noodle Bowl (550g; Best before 11.09.2012), because the product contains undeclared peanut, fish and shellfish allergens.

  • Food Safety Recall (UK): The Co-operative recalls The Co-operative brand of Healthier Choice French Dressing (250mL; all codes), Thousand Island Dressing (250mL; all codes) and Fresh Caesar Dressing (150mL; all codes), after detecting Salmonella in one of the 'minor ingredients' used in the products. Salmonella has not been recovered from any of the finished product samples.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Skiftekær Økologi ApS recalls organic fruits and vegetables, after rats were found in the potato storage area. Please navigate to the recall notice for a list of the affected products and the retailers that carried them.

  • Food Safety Recall Update (Netherlands): The EHEC bacteria found last week in red (pink) beet sprouts is of a strain that has not been reported previously in the Netherlands. The source of the contamination is still under investigation.

  • Food Safety Alert (Italy): On orders from the Ministry of Health, the Carabiniere has seized 5 tons of Steaks Country frozen hamburger patties and meatballs from the Lidl distribution center in Verona province. The seized products, which are currently being analyzed, have been linked to seven reported cases of E. coli O157 illness in children in the Lille area of France.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0782): Listeria monocytogenes in cheese from France; distributed to Australia, Belgium, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0785): Unauthorized octopamine hydrochloride in food supplement from the USA; distributed to the Czech Republic, Estonia, Slovakia and Slovenia.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0786): Aflatoxins in pine nuts (unshelled) from China, via Germany; distributed to Italy.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0787): Unauthorized gold and silver in food supplements from Italy; distributed to Andorra and Spain.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0788): High aerobic plate count (bacteria) in mineral water from Italy; distributed to Malta.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0789): Salmonella in onion powder from Egypt; distributed to Ireland and the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0790): Salmonella in frozen salted chicken cuts from Brazil; distributed to the United Kingdom.

  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0791): Salmonella in lamb meal from the Netherlands; distributed to Belgium.

  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.0794): Undeclared nuts in muesli from the United Kingdom; distributed to Gibraltar and the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0795): Imazalil in mango from Guatemala, via the Netherlands and via Hungary; distributed to Romania.

  • Outbreak Alert (Sweden): Some 50 dog owners - and possibly several dogs - are believed to have been infected with enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) after attending a dog show in eastern Sweden. The 120 participants at the show came from all over Sweden, as well as from Denmark, Norway and Finland. EHEC has been confirmed in two cases; fortunately, a milder strain than is responsible for the German outbreak.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (German sprouts): According to the World Health Organization, there are now a total of 3,517 HUS and non-HUS EHEC cases, including 39 deaths. Germany has reported 798 cases of HUS (25 deaths) and 2,610 cases of non-HUS EHEC (13 deaths).


Australia and New Zealand
  • Medical Device Safety Recall/Alert (Australia): Johnson & Johnson Medical Pty Ltd recalls Life Scan One Touch Verio Blood Glucose Monitoring System, manufactured by Lifescan Inc, USA during August 2010 to December 2010, because users are experiencing repeated 'Error 2' warning messages when used in conditions of high temperature and/or humidity due to contamination on one of the meter's components, which occurred during the manufacturing process.   • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0782): Listeria monocytogenes in cheese from France; distributed to Australia, Belgium, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.

  • Allergy Alert: Big B Distributors, Inc. (Evansville, IN) recalls Moonlite Bar-B-Q Burgoo Soup (16-oz and 32-oz jars; Est. 1717; Case codes 2022141, 2022142, 2052171 or 2052172; produced on February 24, 2011 and May 27, 2011), because the product contains undeclared sodium caseinate, a milk protein. The recalled product was shipped to a distribution center in Kentucky for retail distribution.

  • Allergy Alert: Blount Seafood Corporation dba Blount Fine Foods (Fall River, MA) recalls Turkey Gravy (12 oz, 24 oz plastic and 32 oz sealed cups; packaged for Stop & Shop, Giant (AHOLD), Kings Supermarket, and Hannafords Brothers) and Poultry Gravy (12 oz., 16 oz sealed cups; packaged for Shaws, Hannaford Brothers Blount Fine Foods Poultry Gravy), due to the presence of undeclared hydrolyzed soy protein.

  • Food Safety Recall: Quesos CentroAmericano Corp (Freeport, NY) recalls Queso Fresco "Fresh Cheese" (5-pound foil tray packages; Plant No. 36-9845; Product lot code 05/31/11), after a routine sample tested by the New York State Food Laboratory was found to be contaminated with high levels of Staphylococcus aureus. The recalled Queso Fresco was distributed to stores, delis and restaurants on Long Island, NY.

  • Food Safety Recall Update: C.W. Hendrix Farms, Inc. (Boca Raton, FL) recalls 15,832 cartons of Fresh Cucumbers (Lot #4329 and 4314), after FDA lab analysis detected Salmonella. The recalled cucumbers were distributed in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and New Jersey, and were used in the following vegetable tray brands, which were recalled by Del Monte Fresh Produce, N.A. Inc. (Miami, FL and Canton, MA): Roche Bros. Pick of the Crop, Del Monte, Del Monte Quality, and CIBO Express Gourmet Markets. Please see the Enforcement Report for June 15, 2011 for details. These recalls are ongoing.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Le Culinaire (Saint-Cyprien, QC) recalls several terrines, due to the presence of undeclared soy protein.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Morrisons withdraws Morrisons The Best Fruit Muesli 500g (Best before end May 2012), due to the presence of undeclared nuts.

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert (France): La société Seb recalls Steak Country brand frozen hamburger patties, sold at Lidl (1-kg boxes containing 10 x 100g patties; Lots 10/05/11, 11/05/11, and 12/05/11; Best if used by 10/05/12, 11/05/12 and 12/05/12), due to possible contamination with E. coli. Seven children, aged 20 months to 8 years, have been hospitalized with bloody diarrhea due to E. coli after consuming the hamburgers. At least three of the children are still being treated with dialysis. The hamburgers were produced using meat originating in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Le laboratoire D&A Pharma recalls Rocgel, 1.2g oral suspension of aluminium oxide (Lots H020 and H021), after certain packages are found to be out of specification for microbiological content.

  • Outbreak Alert Update: Germany reports 786 cases of HUS (including 25 deaths) and 2518 cases of non-HUS EHEC (with 13 deaths) in the outbreak of enterohemorrhagic E. coli O104:H4 has been traced to contaminated sprouts. Fifteen other countries - 13 European countries, the USA and Canada - also have reported cases, producing a total of 825 HUS and 2,587 non-HUS EHEC infections, and 39 deaths.

  • Water Safety Alert (UK): Dawlish town beach (south Devon) has been closed to swimmers after filing a routine water quality test.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (PRC): Ten people, including four government staff and six butchers, have been arrested in a case involving clenbuterol-tainted pork.

  • Food Safety Seizure/Recall (Taiwan): The Public Health Bureau of Taichung City has seized more than 80,000 nutritional supplement capsules made with imported ginger powder contaminated with DIPB, a toxic chemical. Distributors were order to remove the product from store shelves.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Water Safety Alert (Christchurch, NZ): The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is reminded food businesses in Christchurch that water used in coffee machines needs to be pre-boiled, due to recent earthquakes.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns the Kellogg Company that a February 2011 inspection of the company's August, Georgia cookie manufacturing facility revealed the presence of a persistent strain of Listeria monocytogenes and a number of significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for food manufacturers.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Gloria's Pantry that a January/February 2011 inspection of the company's food manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of FDA's Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Human Food (CGMP) regulations. In addition, an environmental sample collected during the inspection found Listeria monocytogenes on a direct food contact surface.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Limited that a November 2010 inspection of the company's active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing facility in Morelos, Mexico identified significant deviations from Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) for the manufacture of APIs.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Rolf's Patisserie (Lincolnwood, IL) that a December 2010 through February 2011 inspection of the company's food manufacturing facility revealed the presence of Staphylococcus aureus in the facility and the raw material tolling used in finished baked goods, in addition to FDA's Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for manufacturing, packing, or holding human food.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Euro International Foods, Inc. that a February/March 2011 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Columbine Specialty Products Inc. (Denver, CO) that a December 2010 inspection of the company's manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) in Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Prostar, Inc. (Farmington, CT) that a November 2010 inspection of the company's facility revealed a number of violations of Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations in Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Nutro Laboratories, a div of NBTY, Inc. (South Plainfield, NJ) that an October 2010 inspection of the company's dietary supplement manufacturing facility revealed violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) and FDA regulations pertaining to dietary supplements.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Newport Lobster Company, Inc. (Middletown, RI) that a November/December 2010 inspection of the company's seafood processing establishment revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Vita Pure, Inc. (Roselle, NJ) that a September 2010 inspection of the company's facility revealed a number of serious violations of 21 CFR 111, Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) in Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Foremost Foods International, Inc. (Pomona, CA) that an October/November 2010 inspection of the company's seafood importer establishment revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns California Delights, Inc. (Newman, CA) that an August 2010 inspection of the company's facility revealed significant violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Human Food (CGMP) regulation.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Empresas Y-Nuina, Inc. (Canóvanas, PR) that a June/July 2010 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.

  • Outbreak Alert: As of June 7th, 81 cases of Shigella have been reported in Northern Kentucky, according to the Northern Kentucky Health Department.

  • Outbreak Alert Update: The outbreak or outbreaks of E. coli illness that have been reported in Virginia and Northeast Tennessee involve E. coli O103, E. coli O169 and E. coli O157:H7.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Gagan Foods International Limited recalls Gagan Gulabjamun - Traditional Indian Sweet, 1-Kg, due to the presence of undeclared wheat and/or gluten.

  • Allergy Alert: PTI Foods recalls Ghar Se Apple Murabba, 800g (Code PTF09224), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites.

  • Allergy Alert: Kuo Hua Trading Company Ltd. (Markham, ON) recalls Farm House Pie brand Multi-Layer Black Sesame Pie (480g; all lot codes), due to the presence of undeclared peanuts.

  • Allergy Alert: JFP International (Canada) Inc., (Mississauga, ON) recalls UCC brand Sumiyaki 3 in 1 Coffee Mix (170g; Product of Taiwan; all codes), because the product contains undeclared milk.

  • Food Safety Alert (Tampering): The Toronto Police Service warns that a two-inch sewing needle was found piercing into the spine of a package of Andy Boy Romaine lettuce hearts, purchased from the No Frills store in the Golden Mile Plaza, 1880 Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (Finland): Midsona Finland Oy recalls Naturdiet Drink mix, wild strawberry and vanilla, because the product contains undeclared peanuts and sesame seed traces.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Seamaiden A/S recalls Seafood Mix Marinaramix (Best before 08/2012; product of Vietnam), because Salmonella was detected in the product.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Scan-Food recalls Salt-marinated (1.2%) frozen chicken (Product of Brazil; Best before 24.08.12), because Salmonella was detected in a sample of the product.

  • Food Recall (Denmark): Løgismose Dairy A/S recalls Løgismose Organic Drinking Yogurt, blackberry and vanilla (Best before 12.7.2011), because the beverage is contaminated with yeast.

  • Food Withdrawal (Denmark): Coop Trading A/S withdraws Änglamark Pine nuts (70g; all date codes), because they can cause temporary loss or change of taste.

  • Outbreak Alert (UK): An outbreak of norovirus has struck about 200 tourists and staff at the Bognor Regis holiday camp in Butlins, West Sussex.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0772): Oxamyl in galia melons from Morocco; distributed to Germany.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0773): Glass fragments in red wine in glass bottles from Germany; distributed to Germany and Greece.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Safety Alerts (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) has instructed the trade to stop the use and sale of "iceflake" supplied by a local frozen confection factory, after the product was found to contain DEHP. In addition, CFS has alerted the public that Uni-President Asparagus Juice (Manufactured by Uni-President Enterprises Corp; Expiry date August 1, 2011) may contain DINP, and should not be consumed.

  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Abu Dhabi): Inspectors have detained 33 vehicles for violating rules and regulations governing the transportation of food items.

  • Food Safety Recall (PRC): Authorities in Guangdong Province have recalled and/or seized green tea powder manufactured by Jiangmen Goody's Food Co., Ltd., after DEHP was found in samples of the product.

(Fairfield, NJ) recalls Quenby Hall Blue Stilton Cheese, imported by ANCO Fine Cheese (Product of UK; Lots 019 through 034, with expiration dates of 6/15/2011 through 6/29/2011), after Listeria monocytogenes is found in the bulk cheese during routine testing. The product is imported in bulk (round half 8.5-9.6 lbs) and is sold nationally in retail stores in random weight wedge cuts.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Nikolaos Fine Foods Limited recalls Zarky's, Woodward Meat Purveyors, Savory Secret Gold Coast, and Nikolaos brands of uncooked and par-fry seasoned breaded chicken breast fillets, due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled chicken products were distributed in Ontario for retail sale and to hotel/restaurant/institutional clients.


Europe
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Asda recalls Asda Japanese Style Spicy Rice Cracker Mix (Best before: up to and including 01/11/2011), Asda Spicy Wasabi Mix (Best before: up to and including 13/09/2011) and Asda Japanese Style Baked Rice Cracker Mix (Best before: up to and including 06/02/2012), because the products may contain small pieces of glass.

  • Food Safety Alert (Italy): The Ministry of Health has banned the retail sale for human consumption of eels fished from Lake Garda, because the eels are contaminated with dioxin. The ban will be in effect for the next 12 months while additional testing is undertaken.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Dencon Foods A/S recalls Chicken Kebabs (Product of Hungary; Lot #0046-10; Best before 15/4/2012) after Swedish authorities find Salmonella in a sample of the product.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Hilton Foods Denmark A/S recalls Your Choice Minced Beef 3-7% (450g packages; Best Before 23.05.2011; Lots #400036304A and #400036207A), after Salmonella is found in the raw beef. The recalled minced beef was sold in Kvickly, Superbrugsen and Dagli supermarkets throughout Denmark.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Dana Seafood International Ltd. recalls Instant Noodles (400g net wt; Product of China; Imported by Hao Trading ApS; Best by dec/2013), because the product was imported illegally.

  • Pet Food Safety Recall (Finland): VIP Vescor Ltd. recalls Nutritional Balance Lamb & Rice Growth dog food (Product of Belgium; 1 kg pack, OW 320; 3 kg pack, OW 221; 15 kg pack, OW 222, OW 291, OW 312 and OW 356), because the product is suspected of causing behavioral products in dogs. Analytical results suggest unusually large quantities of nitrogen compounds in the dog food. The recalled products were sold from October 2010 onwards.

  • Medical Device Supplies Safety Recall (France): Roche Diagnostics France recalls ACCU-CHEK glucose test strips (Lot 470049), because the strips can overestimate the glucose concentration in 5% of cases.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0661): Glass fragments in snack mix from the Netherlands; distributed to the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0663): Aflatoxins in groundnuts in shell from China; distributed to Italy.

  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Six wards in Southampton General Hospital have been shut in an effort to stop the spread of a viral gastroenteritis outbreak. Individuals who have suffered diarrhea or other illness within the last 72 hours are being warned to stay away from Southampton's teaching hospitals.   • Outbreak Alert (Russia): An outbreak of Salmonella gastroenteritis has been reported among workers at a gold mine in Chukchi. The local dining hall is suspected to be the source of the infections.

  • Outbreak Alert (Ukraine): Twelve children, aged 2 1/2 to 5 years, who attend a kindergarten in Odessa have been hospitalized with acute gastroenterocolitis, the day after they shared a meal that consisted of preserved fish and milk porridge. Others are reported to be ill, but are being treated at home.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Safety Alert (Vietnam): The Department of Animal Health reports that 97% of Vietnam's 30,000 slaughterhouses were operating without the necessary paperwork and in residential areas rather than abattoirs.

  • Food Safety Alert (Vietnam): The Ho Chi Minh City Veterinary Bureau reports that more than 10% of the meat sold in the city every day is from illegal slaughtering houses and is unsafe.

  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Abu Dhabi): Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority has closed down the United Families for Catering and Food Stuff outlet in Al Ruwais due to repeated non-compliance with food safety regulations. The unlicensed outlet was operating in a makeshift building in a group of labor camps in the desert.

  • Outbreak Alert (Nigeria): Contaminated drinking water is blamed for an outbreak of gastroenteritis, which has killed two people in Gurara (Niger state) and hospitalized 10 others.

  • Outbreak Alert (Singapore): Meals supplied by Mum's Kitchen Catering has been blamed for food poisoning outbreaks in three Singapore preschools - Pat's Schoolhouse, Children's Place, and Learning Vision's Raffles Place branch. The outbreak has affected 235 children and 12 teachers so far. Thirty-four people have been hospitalized, according to the Ministry of Health, and 14 of those have been discharged. The caterer's operating license of has been suspended since Thursday, May 12th.

  • Outbreak Alert (Mauritania): Seven people, including three children developed food poisoning after sharing sweets from a bakery. Rotten eggs used in the preparation of the desserts are thought to be the source of the contamination.

  • Outbreak Alert (India): More than 250 people in Ahmedabad developed Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning after attending a wedding feast held at Dalal Hall on May 17th. The source of the outbreak is thought to be either mango juice, paste or paneer (fresh cheese) added to vegetable stews.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Outbreak Alert (Brazil): Seventeen children who attend Lima City School in Camarigibe were hospitalized with severe stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting on May 13th after eating lunch at the school. The school has been closed pending completion of an investigation in to the incident.

  • Food Safety Recall: Surtex Foods Co. recalls La Original brand Oaxaca String Cheese (Lot #1360912; Expiration date 01/09/2011), because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. The product was distributed in California through retrail stores and distributors.
  • Food Safety Recall: One Great Burger (Elizabeth, NJ) recalls OneGreat Hamburgers (Item #02044; Est. 34575; Produced between Jan. 2010 and May 2010; Packed on dates July 2010 to Nov. 2010), because these ground beef products may have become spoiled. The problem was discovered during an investigation by FSIS into customer complaints of discoloration and off-odors.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): Sprouters Northwest, Inc. recalls all of its clover sprouts and clover sprout mixes because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The expanded recall includes Clover Sprouts, Clover Onion Sprouts, Deli Sprouts, Spicy Sprouts and Brocco Sandwich Sprouts with a "best by" date of 1/16/11 and earlier. Sprouters Northwest has suspended production of these products while FDA and the company investigate the source of the problem. The recalled clover sprout products were distributed in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska through wholesale distribution and retail chains.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Benz's Food Products, Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) that an October 2010 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Inter-Ocean Seafood Traders, Inc. (San Carlos, CA) that a November 2010 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert (Update): Seoul Trading Corporation updates its January 7, 2011 warning to correct the Lot Code for Choripdong brand Vegetable Dumpling. The corrected Lot Code is 2012.05.28D.
  • Food Safety Recall: Ferme G.M.H. Inc (Saint-Christophe-d'Arthabaska, QC) recalls unlabeled fresh or frozen cheese, offered in blocks (approx 450g) or grains, because the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes or Staphylococcus aureus.
  • OTC Product Safety Recall: Shandex Sales Group recalls alcohol swabs, because they may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus. The recalled swabs were distributed across Canada under the following store brands: Remedy Rx (Remedy Rx stores), Uniprix/Option+(Uniprix and PharmaChoice), Life Brand (Shoppers Drug Mart), Equate Walmart), Personelle (Jean Coutu), Rexall (Katz Group stores) and Exact (Loblaws).


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Celtic Chocolates Ltd. recalls Celtic Dairy Free Bars (35g x 6 pack; Batch Codes L10349 and L10350; Best Before December 2011), because they contain casein (a milk protein) which was not declared on the label.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Maysum withdraws Maysum Meat Samosas, 675g (Best before 19 November 2011; Batch code 318102010), because the product contains undeclared sulphur dioxide.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd withdraws Sainsbury's Free From Mint Crisps, 150g (Best before end February 2012) and Celtic Caramel Choices, 120g (Best before end August 2011), because the products contain undeclared milk.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Labeling Alert (Taiwan): Taipei's Health Department advises the public that 12 out of 13 goat's milk tablet products tested by the Department were found to contain a significant proportion of cow's milk.
  • OTC Product Safety Recall Update (Hong Kong): The Hong Kong Department of Health has agreed to allow one brand of Abbott's glucose test strips, Optium Omega, to re-enter the market.

  • Allergy Alert (December 18th): Seoul Trading Corporation recalls Choripdong brand frozen dumplings (810g packages; imported from Korea; all date codes), because the dumplings contain undeclared egg. The recalled dumplings are known to have been distributed in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario (Toronto), and may have been sold nationwide.
  • Allergy Alert (December 22nd): Federated Co-operatives Ltd. (Saskatoon, SK) recalls all lot codes of Quaker brand Chewy Granola Bars Value Pack (14 bars; 364g), because the packs may contain Quaker brand Dipps granola bars that contain peanuts. The affected packs were previously recalled on November 24th, but may have been distributed after the original recall through Co-op retail stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert (December 22nd): Heng Hing Dry Seafood Inc. recalls Fei Dun Chocolates (all best before dates), because the product contains undeclared peanuts.
  • Allergy Alert (December 22nd): CFIA advises consumers that the importer has recalled VSC Chocolats Brandy Beans Brandy Liqueur Chocolates (200g package; made in Germany; lot code L7058 J8 and L7157 J8), because the product may contain undeclared milk. The recalled chocolates were distributed across Canada.
  • Allergy Alert (December 24th): Brand Castle LLC (Chicago, IL) recalls Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats Holiday Village Kit (666g package; all best before dates), because the product contains undeclared egg. The kits, which were imported from the USA, are known to have been distributed in Michael's, Winners and HomeSense stores across Canada, and may also have been sold in other stores.
  • Allergy Alert (December 27th): Thrifty Foods Broadmead (Victoria, BC) recalls in-store baked Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, incorrectly labelled as Chocolate Chip Cookies (Best Before 29 DE 10).
  • Food Safety Recall (December 21st): Réal Veer Inc. (Sainte-Claire, QC) recalls raw shell eggs, imported from the USA (lot code SEA-1024796; Best before JAN-18-11) because the eggs may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled eggs were distributed in the province of Québec.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 21st): Yie Ming (Canada) Ltd., recalls Yu Yuan brand vacuum packed Sweet Glutinous Corn (all lot codes), imported from China, because the product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled product was sold in British Columbia.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 22nd): McCormick Canada recalls certain lot codes of Club House One Step Lemon and Herbs Seasoning, Club House Sesame Seeds, Sysco Sesame Seeds and Trade East Sesame Seeds, because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 24th): Whole Foods Market (Toronto, ON) recalls Rolf's Patisserie brand and Whole Foods Market brand Ginger Bread Houses, imported from the USA, because the products may be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus. The recalled ginger bread houses were sold in Whole Foods stores in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 27th): J & D Produce Inc. (Texas, USA) recalls Little Bear brand fresh greens (shipped to Canada between November 30th and December 7th, inclusive), because the fresh greens may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled produce items were distributed to grocery stores (including Maxi in Montreal, QC) and may have been sold nationwide.   • Allergy Alert (December 17th): YNot Foods, Inc. (Madison, WI) recalls Upsides™ Orzo Toscano, distributed by J.R. Simplot Co. through food service and retail channels in Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Mexico, because the products contain undeclared milk and soybean. The affected production codes are 987SEP301001, 987OCT071001 and 987OCT081001.
  • Allergy Alert (December 17th): Tofutti Brands Inc. expands its earlier recall of 4-pack Yours Truly Frozen Dessert Cones to include lot number 2360. The recalled Dessert Cones, which are labeled "Milk-Free," contain undeclared milk
  • Allergy Alert (December 23rd): Brand Castle, LLC recalls its licensed Rice Krispies Treats Holiday Village Kit (expiration dates 15 Oct 2012, 16 Oct 2012 and 02 Nov 2012), distributed only through Michaels retail stores in the USA and Canada, because the icing component contains undeclared egg.
  • Allergy Alert (December 23rd): South Florida Bakery recalls all lot codes of Publix Bakery Coconut Macaroons (Coquitos), because the products contain a small amount of undeclared milk.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 17th): Sally Jackson Cheese (Oroville, WA) recalls all cheese products, including cow, goat and sheep, because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Sally Jackson cheese are made using raw cow, goat and sheep milk and were distributed nationwide to restaurants, distributors and retail stores.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 17th): Winn Meats Co. (Dallas, TX) recalls 25,600 pounds of ground beef products that were improperly labeled and potentially adulterated.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 20th): Bright Water Seafood (Tucker, GA) recalls Buffalo Krab Dip (7-ounce pkg; expiration 12/21/2010) and Southwest Krab Dip (7-ounce pkg; expiration 12/29/2010), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled items were distributed in retail stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Georgia and Virginia.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 20th): Whole Foods Market recalls cheeses supplied by Sally Jackson Cheese (Oroville, WA) and sold in California, Nevada, Washington State and Washington DC, because the cheese may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 23rd): JFC International, Inc. (Los Angeles, CA) recalls all of its uneviscerated Frozen Capelin, because the fish (imported from Vietnam) may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 24th): Rolf's Patisserie (Lincolnwood, IL) recalls all desserts made after November 1, 2010 after the desserts were linked to several outbreaks of Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning. The recalled products include tiramisu, cakes, cobblers, decorated cookies, tarts, pastries and pies and were available through retail (including grocery stores), wholesale and internet sales, and were distributed through a catering service and to institutions such as nursing homes. One hundred cases of food poisoning – three in Illinois (30 illnesses) and one in Wisconsin (70 illnesses) – have been reported from four separate events in November and December.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 24th): Whole Foods Market recalls items supplied by Rolf's Patisserie and sold in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Please follow the live link for a detailed list of recalled items.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 24th): Whole Foods Market recalls all assembled Ginger Bread Houses made after November 1, 2010 and sold in 22 states, because the ginger bread houses were supplied by Rolf's Patisserie.
  • Food Safety Alert (December 27th): FDA advises consumers not to eat Alfalfa Sprouts and Spicy Sprouts (which contain alfalfa sprouts mixed with radish and clover sprouts) from Tiny Greens Organic Farm (Urbana, IL), after preliminary results link the sprouts to a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 28th): J&D Produce Inc. recalls Little Bear brand Fresh Greens packed on November 30th and December 6th after regulators in Quebec detect Salmonella in a sample of curly parsley and regulators in Detroit detect Salmonella in a sample of cilantro.   • Food Safety Recall (December 28th): Bethel Livestock Farm (Swan Lake, NY) recalls Bethel Creamery Pasteurized Whole Organic Milk (Kosher Cholov Yisroel), packaged in half-gallon plastic containers (Use by JAN 7 2011), because the milk was improperly pasteurized. The recalled milk was distributed to five locations in the Bronx and in Rockland County.

  • Medical Device Safety Recall (December 22nd): Abbott Diabetes Care recalls 359 lots of Precision Xtra®, Precision Xceed Pro®, MediSense® Optium™, Optium™, Optium EZ and ReliOn® Ultima Blood Glucose Test Strips because the affected test strips may give falsely low blood glucose results. The recalled test strips were distributed in the USA and Puerto Rico.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (December 22nd): Pfizer recalls Lipitor® 40mg Tablets (Lot 0836050) due to the presence of an uncharacteristic odor.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (December 22nd): RockHard Laboratories recalls specific lot numbers of RockHard Weekend and Pandora dietary supplements after the recalled products were found to contain an analogue of Sildenafil.
