Belgian Cheese Recall Goes Multinational

A couple of months ago - March 19th to be precise - Belgomilk (Moorslede, Belgium) announced the recall of a single lot of Nazareth Classic rectangular "half-cheese" (approx. 3Kg, plastic-wrapped; Lot ID #0520018301 or 0520018302). The recalled cheese was distributed in Belgium and Germany (RASFF Reference #2011.0374).

The reason for the recall? The company found Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of this batch of cheese.

About a month later, France notified RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) member countries that it had detected Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of cheese from Belgium (RASFF Reference #2011.0511; released 18/04/2011 and updated 11/05/2011). The Alert indicated that there had been "distribution to other member countries."

It, therefore, should not have come as a shock when Belgomilk announced a greatly expanded cheese recall on May 10th, as a result of having found Listeria monocytogenes in an unspecified number of production lots of cheese manufactured at its Moorslede facility. The new recall encompassed cheeses purchased by consumers prior to May 11th.

This list of recalled cheeses includes the following brands and formats:

  • Affligem Tranches/Affligem Slices, ± 400g

  • Belgolight Jeune/Belgolight Young, 200g

  • Brugge d'Or Tranches/Brugge d'Or Slices, ±375g

  • Brugge d'Or Bloc/Brugge d'Or Wedge, ±450g/250g

  • Corsendonk Cubes, 250g

  • Grimbergen Tranches/Grimbergen Slices, ±350g

  • Grimbergen Cubes, ±315g

  • KV Light Fromage Tranches/KV Light Cheese Slices (Light 16% fromage jeune/Light 16% young cheese), ±300g

  • Nazareth Classic Bloc/Nazareth Classic Wedge, ±425g/250g

  • Nazareth Classic Cubes, 150g/250g

  • Nazareth Classic Tranches/Nazareth Classic Slices, 200g/180g

  • Nazareth Light Tranches/Nazareth Light Slices, ±300g

  • Nazareth Tranches/Nazareth Slices, 200g/150g

  • St. Maarten Classic Tranches/St. Maarten Classic Slices, 200g


In addition, the following cheeses were sold "cut to order" at creameries or dairy stands, and as "freshpack" cheese in supermarkets: Belgolight, Bocholter fromage à pain, Brugge d'Or and Nazareth Light & Classic.

Part of the Milcobel dairy cooperative, Belgomilk is headquartered in Kallo, Belgium, and is the largest milk processor in the Milcobel corporate family. Its three factories produce a variety of milk products, including milk powders, butters and cheeses. The Moorslede location produces Belgomilk's branded and Gouda-style cheeses for distribution in Belgium and for export.

According to the RASFF notification (EU #2011.0619) - issued on May 11, 2011 and updated on May 13, 2011 - the cheeses that were recalled by Belgomilk on May 10th were distributed in Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, the Russian Federation, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The RASFF notice does not specify which brands of cheese may have been distributed in which countries. Nevertheless, some of this information can be gleaned from recall notices posted by individual countries. The following list is current, as of May 14th.

Belgium

Recalled cheeses were distributed in Colruyt, OKay, Spar, Alvo and Delhaize stores, as follows:

Not all countries and retailers are equally prompt at posting recall notices - if they post them at all. United States
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): Columbus Meat (906 Randolph, Chicago, IL) expands its earlier recall to include an additional 580 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Azteca Linda Corp, d.b.a. Queso El Azteca (Brooklyn, NY) that June 2010 and August/September 2010 inspections of the company's cheese manufacturing facility revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in multiple areas of the processing facility environment, and serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for food. These violations and the finding of a recurrent strain of Listeria monocytogenes in the processing facility caused the company's ready-to-eat cheese products to be adulterated.
  • FDA Enforcement Action: FDA has obtained a consent decree of permanent injunction against Deltex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Rosenberg, TX). The consent decree permanently prohibits/stops the company, its president and its vice-president from manufacturing and distributing drug products until Deltex's operations and products are in compliance with federal law. In addition, the company must recall drugs that were manufactured and distributed since October 31, 2008.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: KRAZY CMAK (6275 Somerled Ave., Montreal, QC) recalls Atlantic Smoked Salmon/Saumon Atlantique Fumé (all vacuum packages carrying a packaging date prior to January 6, 2011) because the expiration date shown on the package does not provide assurance of safety.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (Sweden): ICA withdraws ICA Grill Chips Barbecue Potato Crisps (300g), because the chips contain undeclared milk protein.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Magnihill recalls Scan brand frozen raspberries (Lot ID D33102; lot #03022809) because the product is suspected to contain norovirus.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0054): Unsuitable organoleptic characteristics (unpleasant taste) of dates from Iran; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0055): Norovirus in oysters (Crassostrea gigas) from France; distributed to Denmark.
  • Consumer Product Safety Notification (EU #2011.0056): Migration of formaldehyde from melamine bowl from China; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU#2011.0057): Glass fragment in fruit juice smoothie from Germany; distributed to Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0060): Unauthorized abamectin in corned beef from Brazil; distributed to the United Kingdom.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Woolworths Supermarkets Ltd. recalls Woolworths Home Brand Crumbed Fish Lemon Flavoured Frozen Portions (500g cardboard box; product of China; all expiration dates from 17/02/2012 to 23/03/2012 inclusive), because the product many contain undeclared peanuts. The recalled frozen fish was sold in New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory.

United States
  • Food Safety Recall: Surtex Foods Co. recalls La Original brand Oaxaca String Cheese (Lot #1360912; Expiration date 01/09/2011), because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. The product was distributed in California through retrail stores and distributors.
  • Food Safety Recall: One Great Burger (Elizabeth, NJ) recalls OneGreat Hamburgers (Item #02044; Est. 34575; Produced between Jan. 2010 and May 2010; Packed on dates July 2010 to Nov. 2010), because these ground beef products may have become spoiled. The problem was discovered during an investigation by FSIS into customer complaints of discoloration and off-odors.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): Sprouters Northwest, Inc. recalls all of its clover sprouts and clover sprout mixes because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The expanded recall includes Clover Sprouts, Clover Onion Sprouts, Deli Sprouts, Spicy Sprouts and Brocco Sandwich Sprouts with a "best by" date of 1/16/11 and earlier. Sprouters Northwest has suspended production of these products while FDA and the company investigate the source of the problem. The recalled clover sprout products were distributed in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska through wholesale distribution and retail chains.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Benz's Food Products, Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) that an October 2010 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Inter-Ocean Seafood Traders, Inc. (San Carlos, CA) that a November 2010 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert (Update): Seoul Trading Corporation updates its January 7, 2011 warning to correct the Lot Code for Choripdong brand Vegetable Dumpling. The corrected Lot Code is 2012.05.28D.
  • Food Safety Recall: Ferme G.M.H. Inc (Saint-Christophe-d'Arthabaska, QC) recalls unlabeled fresh or frozen cheese, offered in blocks (approx 450g) or grains, because the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes or Staphylococcus aureus.
  • OTC Product Safety Recall: Shandex Sales Group recalls alcohol swabs, because they may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus. The recalled swabs were distributed across Canada under the following store brands: Remedy Rx (Remedy Rx stores), Uniprix/Option+(Uniprix and PharmaChoice), Life Brand (Shoppers Drug Mart), Equate Walmart), Personelle (Jean Coutu), Rexall (Katz Group stores) and Exact (Loblaws).


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Celtic Chocolates Ltd. recalls Celtic Dairy Free Bars (35g x 6 pack; Batch Codes L10349 and L10350; Best Before December 2011), because they contain casein (a milk protein) which was not declared on the label.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Maysum withdraws Maysum Meat Samosas, 675g (Best before 19 November 2011; Batch code 318102010), because the product contains undeclared sulphur dioxide.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd withdraws Sainsbury's Free From Mint Crisps, 150g (Best before end February 2012) and Celtic Caramel Choices, 120g (Best before end August 2011), because the products contain undeclared milk.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Labeling Alert (Taiwan): Taipei's Health Department advises the public that 12 out of 13 goat's milk tablet products tested by the Department were found to contain a significant proportion of cow's milk.
  • OTC Product Safety Recall Update (Hong Kong): The Hong Kong Department of Health has agreed to allow one brand of Abbott's glucose test strips, Optium Omega, to re-enter the market.

Cheese, Please! - The Saputo Recalls

Processed cheese recall by Canada's largest cheese maker triggers nationwide sandwich recalls

The two recall notices for processed cheese slices, which were issued by Saputo Inc. (Montreal, QC) on November 26th and December 2nd, have triggered a multiplicity of secondary recalls of sandwiches, subs and burgers that contain the recalled cheese slices.

The following processed cheese foods were supplied to retailers, cash & carry and deli stores, and may also have been sold to food service institutions such as restaurants, hospitals, day care centers, and nursing homes across Canada.
  • Faith Farms Ribbon Slices Process Cheese Product Made with Swiss Cheese:- UPC 065949040029; Best Before up to and including 2011 JN 15; 2 kg.

  • Allergy Alert: Toffutti Brands Inc. recalls 25 pallets of Yours Truly Frozen Dessert Cones (4-pack; Manufacturing facility 18-497; Production codes 2330 or 2350; produced in August 2010), due to possible trace levels of undeclared milk. The recalled product is labeled as Milk-free. Most of the recalled product was sold along the east coast and in the Midwest; none was shipped to any west coast distributors or stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: Tropical Nut & Fruit (Charlotte, NC) recalls all of its products containing walnuts supplied after November 16th by Atlas Walnuts, LLC because the walnuts may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were sold in retail stores nationwide and were distributed to manufacturers and distributors. In addition to products sold under the Tropical brand, two of the recalled items were supplied under the Harris Teeter brand and one item was labeled as Atlas.   • Food Safety Recall: Mitsuwa Corporation (Torrance, CA) recalls Butter Ball candy imported from Japan after tests conducted by the California Department of Public Health finds unacceptable levels of lead in the candy.


Canada
  • Food Safety Alert: CFIA is warning the public not to consume unwrapped, unlabeled cantaloupes sold from Canada Safeway Limited, 655 Osborne Street, Winnipeg on December 5th, because the cantaloupes may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall: Québec's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) warns the public not to consume cheese slices and certain products containing cheese slices sold at Le Marché végétarien (Drummondville), Les aliments Bégin Inc. (Saint-Ludger) and Boucherie Claude Giguère (Trois-Rivières), because the cheese slices were recalled by Saputo Inc. and may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall: MAPAQ warns the public not to consume cheese slices purchased at Les arpents verts (Chambly) and Boucherie J.F. (Saint-Hubert), because the cheese slices were recalled by Saputo Inc. and may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: NorthRegentRx recalls ResurreXX, promoted as a dietary supplement, after test conducted by Health Canada detected the presence of undeclared hydroxyhomosildenafil, an analog of the prescription medicine, sildenafil.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Asda recalls Asda Strawberry Swirled Cheesecake, 125g (Use by 17 December 2010) de to the presence of undeclared egg.

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Deltapharm Limited recalls Anlina Vaginal Tablet (Batch No. 0T59001), imported from Thailand, because the tablets disintegrate more slowly than is acceptable.
  • Health Product Safety Alert (Singapore): The Health Sciences Authority warns the public that JianBu HuQian Wan, imported from overseas, contains the undeclared medical active ingredients dexamethasone (a corticosteroid) and chlorpheniramine, and should not be consumed. The product is advertised as a treatment for joint pain, muscle aches and weak limbs and bears an invalid Malaysian Product Registration Number MAL05121196T. One adverse reaction is known to have occurred.

  • Allergy Alert: Pampanga Food Company, Inc. (Anaheim, CA) recalls approximately 14,430 pounds of PAMPANGA Sauteed Chicken (30-pound cases containing 3-pound bags; Est. No. P-9029-A; packaged between May 6th and Dec 6th, 2010; Lot No. 0506 to 1203), due to the presence of undeclared whey. The recalled products were shipped to distribution centers for further sale to restaurants in California and Hawaii.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Reese Pharmaceutical Company (Cleveland, OH) recalls Lot #091612 (60-count bottles of guaifenesin 200mg tablets) of Refenesen Expectorant Select Brand Mucus Relief Expectorant, QC Medifin Expectorant, and Leader Cough Tabs Expectorant, because of undeclared active ingredients acetaminophen, phenylephrine and chlorpheniramine maleate.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert: FDA warns consumers not to use Man Up Now capsules, marketed as an "herbal" and "all natural" dietary supplement for sexual enhancement, because the capsules contain a variation of an active ingredient found in Viagra (sulfoaildenafil) that can dangerously lower blood pressure. Man Up Now is distributed by Synergy Distribution LLC and is sold on Internet sites, online marketplaces and, possibly in retail outlets.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall (Update): The Consumer Product Safety Commission has reversed its earlier ruling and now considers Wizard of Oz and superhero drinking glasses to be adult products. These glasses, which were found to have elevated lead levels in the decorative paint on their outside surfaces, were recalled because the level of lead exceeded the limits for children's products.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Unger's Market (London, ON) recalls Cherry Cake (small and large), Dundee Cake (small and large), Glasgow Gingerbread (small and large) and Sultana Cake (small and large) due to the presence of undeclared milk and (except for the Sultana Cake) undeclared sulphites. The products were sold at Unger's Market, Gainsborough Road, London, ON.
  • Food Safety Recall: MAPAQ advises that several subs and sandwiches sold under the Les Cuisines Polo Bic brand (Best before 30 décembre 2010), and subs and sandwiches Best before 30 décembre 2010) sold at Dépanneur Godefroy (Saint-Grégoire, QC) have been recalled because they were made using processed cheeses recalled by Saputo Inc on December 2nd.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: McNeil Consumer Healthcare (Canada) recalls all lots numbers and flavors of ROLAIDS® Ultra Strength SoftChews® and ROLAIDS® Ultra Strength SoftChews® plus Gas Relief, following consumer reports of foreign materials in the product, including metal and wood products.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Natural Performance Products Ltd. recalls specific lot numbers of the male sexual enhancement products Durazest for Men and Once More, because the products contain the undeclared pharmaceutical ingredient nortadalafil.
  • Health Product Safety Recall: Les Produits Naturels Leblanc Inc. recalls Flat Stomach Concept Extra, due to missing label statements related to the duration of use, risks and contraindications.
  • Cosmetic Product Safety Alert: Health Canada warns that ten professional hair smoothing solutions (in addition to Brazilian Blowout Solution) contain levels of formaldehyde above the limit set by Health Canada. The affected products are available in hair salons across Canada, but not generally sold directly to consumers. Please refer to the Health Canada Advisory for details.


Europe
  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Lidl Suomi Ky recalls Peking Ente young German frozen duck, 2.4 kg (Best before 31.03.2012; Lot code L10.256G), because the product, which was imported from Germany, may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): JAN Import A/S recalls XXL Organic Cane Sugar, 2kg (Best before 29/11-2011; Lot #8784-18), sold in Bilka stores across Denmark, because there have been a small number of small, translucent, whitish plastic-like balls (1mm diam) found in the product.

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: McNeil Consumer Healthcare (Fort Washington, PA) recalls all lots and packaging formats of ROLAIDS® Extra Strength Softchews, ROLAIDS® Extra Strength plus Gas Softchews, and ROLAIDS® Multi-Symptom plus Anti-Gas Softchews, distributed in the United States, after receiving consumer complaints of foreign materials - including metal and wood particles - in the products. The implicated products were manufactured for McNeil by a third party. While McNeil's investigation is ongoing, the company has suspended production of the recalled products, and will not restart production until corrective actions have been implemented.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fruitology, Inc. recalls Pomegranate Fruit A Vie with Resveratrol (24 oz. Glass Bottles, LOT# 11280298), because the bottles may have invisible hairline cracks that may cause a bottle to break spontaneously or upon handling. The product was sold in BJ's Wholesale Club stores from November 1, 2010 through November 19, 2010.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: Barrie Bros. Local Food Company 1892 (Cambridge, ON) expands its earlier recall to include the following additional vegetable soup products: Fresh Asparagus Soup, Fresh Cauliflower Soup, Butternut Squash Soup, Sweet Potato & Red Pepper Soup, Potato & Leek Soup, Jeff Suddaby's Gourmet Curried Pumpkin & Sweet Potato Soup, and Jeff Suddaby's Gourmet Vegetable Barley Soup. The recall was initiated because the products, which are packed in 744mL Mason jars with metal lids and have neither lot codes nor Best before dates, may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled soups were distributed in Ontario.

Australia and New Zealand
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall (Australia): P & N Beverages Pty Ltd recalls Toddler Pops fruit drinks, because the flip-top lid represents a choking hazard. The products were distributed nationally through Woolworths, Coles, Metcash and Franklins stores.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): J.L. King & Co recalls Tuna Pasta Salad (available for sale in delicatessens between December 3rd and December 7th), because the salads may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The products were available in IGA Howling (NSW/VIC border), Terang Co-op Terang (VIC), and Fishers supermarkets in Robinvale and Merbein (both in VIC).
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): J Boag & Son Pty Ltd recalls several James Boag's beers (375 ml green or brown glass bottles; all best before dates from 23/06/11 to 12/08/11), because a packaging fault may result in a piece of glass breaking away from the rim of the bottle upon opening. The recalled beers were distributed nationally in Australia and were bound for export to the UK, the USA and Singapore; however, the products bound for export have been held in transit.

  • Allergy Alert: L&R Fine Fashions, Inc. (Garden Grove, CA) recalls approximately 2,182 pounds of raw pork paste and ready-to-eat fried pork loaf products because they contain undeclared wheat. The recalled items include Kim Loan Giò Sông Pork Paste Fish Sauce Added (11-oz pkg) and Kim Loan Chá Chiên Fried Pork Loaf Fish Sauce Added (14-oz loaf). The recalled items, which bear establishment number EST. 40074 and were produced between Jan 22, 2010 and Dec 6, 2010, were distributed to retail establishments in Southern California.
  • Food Safety Recall: Mojave Foods Corporation recalls sixty (60) packages of El Guapo Nuez Entera / Shelled Walnuts (1-oz pkg; date code 5527), manufactured with walnuts supplied by Atlas Walnuts (Visalia, CA) after Mojave is advised that the walnuts may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled El Guapo walnuts were supplied to retailers in Southern California.
  • Food Safety Recall: Pablo's Produce, Inc. (Oxnard, CA) recalls one lot of Cilantro bundles (UPC 03383801049) available for sale from November 24, 2010 through December 2, 2010), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: Barrie Bros. Local Food Company 1892 (Cambridge, ON) recalls Barrie Bros. Fresh Broccoli Soup (744mL Mason glass jar with metal lid; no UPC or lot code), because the product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled products were distributed only in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): The Canadian Food Inspection Agency updates the list of affected sandwich products that were made with processed cheese sliced recalled by Saputo Inc. on December 2nd. These products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health alerts members of the public not to buy or consume unknown or doubtful slimming products from the Internet as they may contain undeclared drug ingredients that are dangerous to health. The appeal followed the arrest on December 8th of two men, aged 26 and 38 respectively, in two separate joint operations by the Police and the DH for suspected sale of six slimming products which were found to contain undeclared and banned drug ingredients. The six products were "Miaozi Qiantijiaonang", "Leptin Slimup Fuel Coffee", "Leptin Coffee Weight Loss", "Relacore South African Hoodia Capsule", "Rehuoshoushen II Xinzixilie Pilipeifang" and "Rehuoshoushen III Xinzixilie Boluopeifang". All six of the products contained sibutramine, and three of them also contained phenolphthalein.
