United States
  • Food Recall: Buehler's (Smith's) recalls 2% Milk (1/2 gallon containers; Lot code July 27), because the milk may have oxidized. This is not a safety issue, according to Buehler's.

  • FDA Enforcement Action: The US District Court for the Western District has granted FDA's motion for summary judgment and entered an order of permanent injunction against Rhody Dairy, LLC and its owner, after Rhody Dairy failed to administer drugs to animals with adequate control measures, such as keeping complete records to ensure that animals are not over-medicated or sent to slaughter too soon after treatment with animal drugs. According to the ruling, these practices constitute “insanitary conditions” that may render food harmful to health under the Act. Legal action was taken after FDA investigators documented the farm's unlawful practices during several inspections over the course of the past decade.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (France): Société Dumortier recalls Bouton d'Or chez Intermarché Shallot Vinaigrette (Vinaigrette à Echalote), 500mL (Lot #L11126 S02; Best before 06/05/2012), due to the presence of undeclared mustard.

  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Sainsbury's recalls Taste the Difference Melting Middle 2 Smoked Haddock with Cheddar and Leek Fishcakes ( Use by 14 July 2011), because the product may be contaminated with small pieces of metal.

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert (Denmark): Romer Product recalls Romer Product Organic Tofu, 500g glass jar (Drained weight 200g; Best before 20/04-2014 and 10/05-2014), because the product may contain botulinum toxin.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): O. Kavli A/S recalls Sunsweet prunes (400g bag; Best before October 2012), because some of the prunes have fermented.

  • Food Safety Withdrawal (Norway): Nelson Garden withdraws Product Number 5665 Hot Mix Series Primo Vitamino seed mix for sprouting, because the seed mix contains fenugreek seeds that were imported from Egypt. The withdrawn seed mix was on the market since November 2010.

  • Outbreak Alert (UK): For the second time in a month, a ward at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry has been closed to new admissions due to an outbreak of Norovirus.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (France): The strain of E. coli O104:H4 that was behind the outbreak in Gironde (Bordeaux) has been determined to correspond genetically to the strain that was recovered during the German outbreak.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0988): Diarrhoeic Shellfish Poisoning toxins in chilled mussels from the United Kingdom; distributed to France and the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0990): Formetanate in peppers from Turkey; distributed to Germany.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0991): Salmonella in liquid egg protein from Austria; distributed to Austria and Croatia.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0992): Aflatoxins in mold-infested dried rice flour from India; distributed to Austria, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0993): Aflatoxins in sunflower seeds from Turkey; distributed to Germany and Turkey.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2011.0994): Excessive caffeine in food supplement from the United States, via Sweden; distributed to Norway.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0995): Mercury in chilled little tunny from Greece; distributed to Italy.

  • Medical Device Safety Recall (Brazil): Incomepe Indústria de Materiais Cirúrgicos Ltda. recalls Protese Parcial de Quadril Tipo Thompson Incomepe/Thompson Type Partial Hip Implant (Lot 013 921; Models 3003900/Ø39; 3004100/Ø41; 3004300/Ø43; 3004500/Ø45; 3004700/Ø47; 3004900/Ø49; 3005100/Ø51; 3005300 / Ø53), after tests identify gaps in the quality of raw materials and the manufacturing process.

  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for imported ready-to-eat smoked duck breast products that were recalled by Palmex, Inc. (Champlain, NY) due to possible Salmonella contamination.

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: American Regent recalls Calcium Gluconate Injection, USP, 10%, 100 mL Pharmacy Bulk Package (Lot #1006, Expiration Date: January 2013, NDC # 0517-3900-25), because some of the vials may contain silicone particles.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Punjab Trading, Inc. (Auburn, WA) that a February 2011 inspection of the company's food storage and processing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations for manufacturing, packing, or holding human food.

  • Boil Water Order (Florida): Residents of Sunrise, Weston, Southwest Ranches and parts of Davie are told to boil water for one minute, as E. coli was found in a Sunrise city well.

  • Food/Water Safety Advisory (New Jersey): The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued a reminder that harvesting blue claw crabs from the waters of the Lower Passaic River and Newark Bay is prohibited, as scientists have found that crabs from those waters continue to show harmful levels of cancer-causing dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as well as other contaminants, including mercury.

  • Dietary Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0965): Unauthorized sildenafil thiono analogues, tadalafil and vardenafil in various food supplements from China; distributed to Andorra, Germany, Italy, Panama, Spain and the USA.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Salamina Inc. recalls Bacon and Back Bacon Topping (5 Kg; Codes 179185 and 172187), due to the presence of undeclared soy. The recalled product was distributed to hotels, restaurants, and institutional customers in Ontario and Quebec.

  • Allergy Alert: KO & C Enterprises Ltd. recalls Yuh Ming Dried Marinated Mustard (70g), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was sold in retail stores in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

  • Outbreak Alert (Ontario): A patient at Welland Hospital has become the 23rd fatality in an outbreak of Clostridium difficile, which has plagued the Niagara region since May 28th. At least 20 of the 23 patient deaths were due to hospital-acquired C. difficile infections.


Europe
  • Cosmetic Product Safety Recall (France): Casino Famili recalls Casino Famili brand hair care cream with shea butter, due to bacteriological contamination. The recalled product was sold in Casino supermarkets.

  • Food Safety Notification Update (EU #2011.0884): Salmonella spp. in mild paprika from Spain, via Belgium; distributed to Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Martinique, Morocco, Netherlands and Sweden.

  • Food Withdrawal (Denmark): Dansk Supermarked withdraws ATCO Almonds (200g, 500g and 1000g packs; imported from Germany; all lots with package date of 03.03.2011 onwards), due to traces of moths in the bags of almonds.

  • Outbreak Alert (UK-Northern Ireland): Seven cases of Clostridium difficile have been reported in the South Eastern Trust area, including one case of the virulent 027 strain at Ulster Hospital. There also has been an outbreak of Norovirus at the Ulster Hospital, with up to 50 patients and staff having been affected with vomiting and diarrhea.

  • Outbreak Alert (Ukraine): As of July 16th, 23 cases of Vibrio cholerae (O1 serogroup, El Tor biovar, serovar Ogawa) have been reported in Mariupol. The city is maintaining a ban on swimming and fishing in the Azov sea and in local rivers.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0960): Aflatoxins in roasted rice flour from India, via the United Kingdom; distributed to Germany.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0961): Glass fragments in banana based baby food from Spain; distributed to France.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0964): Salmonella in frozen marinated chicken breast fillets from Brazil, via Portugal; distributed to the United Kingdom.

  • Dietary Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0965): Unauthorized sildenafil thiono analogues, tadalafil and vardenafil in various food supplements from China; distributed to Andorra, Germany, Italy, Panama, Spain and the USA.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0966): Plastic fragments in biscuits from Italy; distributed to Belgium.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0967): Salmonella in spiced and marinated chicken meat from Brazil; distributed to the Netherlands.

  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0968): Salmonella Agona in dog chew from Germany; distributed to Austria.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0969): Salmonella in spiced marinated chicken meat from Brazil; distributed to the Netherlands.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0970): Moths in almonds from Germany; distributed to Denmark.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0971): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled hake from Spain; distributed to Italy.

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): The Department of Health orders GlaxoSmithKline Limited to recall Augmentin 375mg tablets, because samples of the product were found to contain the plasticizers DIDP, DEHP and DINP.

  • Food Safety Notification Update (EU #2011.0884): Salmonella spp. in mild paprika from Spain, via Belgium; distributed to Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Martinique, Morocco, Netherlands and Sweden.

  • Food Safety Alert/Recall (Saudi Arabia): The Saudi Food & Drug Authority warns the public not to consume Dunya potable drinking water, produced by Wadi Al Heniya Factory for Health Water, after lab analysis shows that the water contains bromate in excess of maximum allowed limits.

  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Korea): The Korea Food & Drug Administration has taken legal action against two companies who used illegal food preservatives in their products.

  • Outbreak Alert (PRC): China reports 2,658 cases of food poisoning in the second quarter, and 29 deaths. Bacterial causes of food poisoning accounted for 1,744 of the illnesses in the quarter.

  • Outbreak Alert (Thailand): The Udon Thani Provincial Health Office reports 16,851 cases of diarrhea in the province since the beginning of 2011.

  • Outbreak Alert (Israel): Twenty Palestinian prisoners were treated for food poisoning at a Negev prison.

  • Outbreak Alert (India): Two people died of typhoid recently in the city of Ahmedabad.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert: Food Standards Australia New Zealand advises the public not to consume two coffee products - Sexpresso and Rock Hard - as the products contain variations (analogues) of Viagra (sildenafil).

  • Allergy Alert Update: Bruce Foods Corporation (New Iberia, LA) recalls mislabeled cans of Food Club Red Enchilada Sauce, 10-oz cans (Code ECH 451244; Best Before 5/13/2015), that may contain Green Enchilada Sauce instead of Red. The mislabeled cans contain undeclared wheat and soy, which is present in the Green Enchilada Sauce. The recalled product was sold in retail stores between 5/31/2011 and 7/02/2011 in Texas, Virginia, Minnesota, Alabama, and Ohio.

  • Food Safety Recall (Ohio): Valley Farm Meats (dba Strasburg Provision, Inc.) recalls beef products due to possible contamination with prohibited materials (spinal cord and vertebral column). The recall includes all beef products slaughtered and processed by or purchased from Valley Farm Meats retail store in Strasburg, OH, or from Ed Lind Livestock and Poultry in Medina, OH. The recalled products were produced between 01/28/2011 and 07/05/2011 and offered for sale from 01/28/2011 through 07/11/2011.

  • Food Safety Recall: Sid Wainer & Son, Inc. (New Bedford, MA) recalls imported ready-to-eat Magret de Canard Fumé Seche/Dried Smoked Duck Breast (Product of Canada; Lot No. 111217; Package code 11JN20; Best before 11DE17), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed for institutional use in Connecticut, Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania.

  • Food Safety Recall: Palmex, Inc. (Champlain, NY) recalls imported ready-to-eat Magret de Canard Fumé Seche/Dried Smoked Duck Breast (Product of Canada; Lot No. 111217; Package code 11JN20; Best before 11DE17), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were sent to distribution centers in California and exported to the Dominican Republic.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall Expanded: Global Wellness LLC (Hollywood, FL) recalls Via Xtreme Ultimate Sexual Enhancer Dietary Supplement for Men (Lot No. A032111 03/13), because the product contains sulfoaildenafil methanesulfonate, sulfosildenafil and dimethylsildenafil, which are not approved for use due to safety concerns.

  • Outbreak Alert: Teton County (Wyoming) public health officials have confirmed several cases of norovirus in northwest Wyoming in the past few weeks. Illness reports have been logged in Jackson, Teton Village, and Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Separately, the Wyoming Department of Health is tracking a sharp increase in reported cases of Campylobacter across the state.

  • Outbreak Alert: Wicomico County (Maryland) Health Department is investigating a cluster of reported foodborne illnesses that officials believe is linked to a fish fry held in Salisbury on July 1st. At least some of the illnesses involve Salmonella.

  • Outbreak Alert: The CDC is investigating an increase in cases of Campylobacter gastroenteritis in Yuma County (Arizona) and San Luis Rio Colorado (Sonora, Mexico) over the past three months, accompanied by an increase in cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome - a known secondary complication associated with Campylobacter infections.

  • Outbreak Alert: The Federal Bureau of Prisons has confirmed that a Salmonella outbreak occurred at the U.S. Penitentiary-Canaan (Waymart, PA), a high-security federal prison. More than 300 inmates and staff developed salmonellosis after consuming tainted chicken served in fajitas on June 25th, according to the Associated Press report. The food was all cooked and prepared on site.

  • Outbreak Alert: The Rhode Island Department of Health has received a report of a laboratory-confirmed case of Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection in a male in his 70s who ate raw clams earlier this month. The Department is not certain where the clams were harvested. The man was treated and is recovering.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Dai Jung Distributing recalls Lee brand Lemon Grass from Fresh Stems (200g; SLM MFG:28AUG2010BB:31AUG2012), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was distributed through retailers in Ontario and Quebec.

  • Food Safety Recall: Palmex Inc (Marieville, QC) recalls Dried Smoked Duck Breast, (Prepared for Palmex Inc. by Charcuterie Parisienne Inc.; Canada 377; Code Lot 111217; Pkgd on 11JN20), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled ready-to-eat product was distributed in Quebec and Ontario.

  • Food Safety Recall: Sol Cuisine Inc. recalls Sol Cuisine brand Spicy Bean Burger (364g frozen pkg; Lot code 06711), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed nationally.


Europe
Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Vita Green Health Products Co. Ltd recalls Doctor's Choice - Evening Primrose Oil (Manufactured in the USA by Captek Softgel Int'l Inc.; Best before July 28, 2013; Batch No. OEO82OA), because the product contains the plasticizers DEHP and DBP.

  • Consumer Product Safety Recall (Philippines): Procter and Gamble Distributing Phils. recalls Oral-B Tooth and Gum Care Alcohol Free Mouth Rinse (500ml, 350ml, and 60 ml; Manufactured in Columbia), after detecting out-of specification microbial levels in some products produced at the manufacturing site.

  • Health Alert (PRC): A duck processor in central China has been dumping duck excrement and dead animals directly into a river, killing fish and polluting the water. As many as 100,000 people may have been sickened as a result of the actions of the processor.

  • Outbreak Alert (Taiwan): The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed a new case of zoonotic brucellosis in a 60-year-old woman who visited Malaysia in April.

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a suspected outbreak of food poisoning involving 13 people who participated in an office lunch party on July 11th. Eleven of the 13 victims consulted a medical practitioner, and one person was hospitalized.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall (Australia): Procter & Gamble Australia Pty Ltd. recalls Oral-B Tooth & Gum Care Mouth Rinse (All flavors, sizes and batches), because the product contains out-of-specification microbial levels. The recalled Mouth Rinse was sold nationwide.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Food Safety Recall: Palmex, Inc. (Champlain, NY) recalls imported ready-to-eat Magret de Canard Fumé Seche/Dried Smoked Duck Breast (Product of Canada; Lot No. 111217; Package code 11JN20; Best before 11DE17), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.   • Food Safety Recall: Food City advises that Food Club Red Enchilada Sauce, 10 oz has been recalled.

  • Outbreak Alert: barfblog reports that Manatee County Health Department is investigating a case of Vibrio vulnificus infection contracted from eating oysters.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: CFIA warns the public that Healthy Times brand Brown Rice Cereal for Baby (6 oz/170g pkg; Product of USA; Lot 02711; Use by 15 JAN 2013) contains undeclared gluten, and is being recalled by the Canadian importers of the product. One allergic reaction has been reported. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario and may have been distributed nationally.

  • Personal Hygiene Product Safety Recall: Procter & Gamble recalls Oral B Anti-Cavity Dental Rinse - Alcohol Free, and Oral-B Anti-Bacterial with Fluoride - Alcohol Free Daily Use Mouthrinse, due to possible microbial contamination.


Europe
  • Food Recall (Belgium): Quality Nuts BVBA recalls pine nuts (sold from October 2010 through December 2010) after the bitter variety Pinus Armandii was found in certain packages.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Econova Garden AB (Sweden) recalls Weibull Mix Spire Mixture (seeds for sprouting; Product code number 7651), after the Swedish firm learns that the seed mixture contains fenugreek seeds from the batch implicated in the E. coli O104:H4 outbreak.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Switzerland): Norovirus has been confirmed as the cause of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis that sickened a total of 60 military recruits last week.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Safety Recall (Hong Kong): The distributor and importer were warned by the Centre for Food Safety to recall San Bu Bridge Kaiping Preserved Bean Curd (1,000g per bottle; Product of China; Best Before July 29, 2012 and November 29, 2012), manufactured by Kaiping Chuang Feng Trading Company Limited of Guangdong, after the Centre for Food Safety found elevated numbers of Bacillus cereus in samples drawn from the two recalled production lots.

  • Proprietary Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): The Department of Health instructs Chaisentomg Pharmaceutical Factory Limited to recall five powdered medicines, as they were found to exceed the stated product weight.

  • Allergy Alert: Posh Bakery recalls Whole Foods Market Butter Mini Croissants and Chocolate Mini-Croissants due to an egg wash that was undeclared on the product label.

  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Mizuno USA Inc. recalls Mizuno Supreme Series and Ballpark Pro baseball and softball gloves, because some of the gloves were found to contain a variety of molds.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: Albion Fisheries Ltd. (Vancouver, BC) recalls Mussel N/ Shell Honey Mussels (5 lb; Lot #181951), due to the presence of marine biotoxins. The recalled mussels were distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutional customers in Alberta and British Columbia.

  • Pharmaceutical Product Health Advisory: Health Canada reminds the public, particularly women of child-bearing age, of the risks to children whose mothers take a valproate drug, used to treat epilepsy, while pregnant. There is a rare, but well known risk of birth defects in children whose mothers took a valproate drug while pregnant. Also, some recent studies have found that children whose mothers took a valproate drug tend to score lower on cognitive tests than children whose mothers took other anti-epileptic medications.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (Ireland and UK): The Food Safety Authority of Ireland and the UK Food Standards Agency announce the recall of Donegal Catch Limited Edition Fish Fillets in a Golden Breadcrumb (Best Before Sept. 2012; Batch Number L 1 066), because a packaging error has resulted in some packs containing product with undeclared milk.

  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): AFSCA has ordered the recall of Nicola Spanish potatoes (2.5Kg bags), sold in Lidl stores, because these potatoes contain an elevated level of fosthiazate, a chemical used to control nematodes.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Ren-Diet recalls Fenugreek seeds (125g bags; Expiry 24 May 2012; Lot #28551), because the bags contain seeds from the same batches of fenugreek seeds from Egypt believed to be the source of E. coli O104:H4 outbreaks in Germany and France.

  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Inex Partners Oy recalls Weibulls Mix seeds for sprouting (55/75g bags; Expiration date 09/30/2013 or 30/09/2014), because the product contains fenugreek seeds originating in Egypt.

  • Food Safety Recall (Netherlands): The Food Safety Authority announces a recall of Sperli brand fenugreek seeds or mixed seeds containing fenugreek bought at two garden centers, because the packages contain seeds potentially contaminated with EHEC (E. coli O104:H4).

  • Food Safety Recall Update (Italy): Carrefour recalls several production lots of Prosciutto cotto affettato di alta qualità alla brace 150g (please navigate to il fatto alimentare for affected production lot details), because the prosciutto may contain unacceptable levels of Listeria monocytogenes.

  • OTC Product Safety Recall (France): Laboratoire Pierre Fabre Medicament recalls Laboratoire Pierre Fabre Medicament Cliptol Gel, 50g (Topical preparation; Lot #G00123 to G00136, inclusive, G00139, G00142 and G00143), because of an error in the precautions for use labeling.

  • Outbreak Alert (Switzerland): Thirty-five military recruits are suspected to have been infected with norovirus and are receiving medical assistance in the infirmary.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (France): Four people remain hospitalized in Chu de Bordeaux after becoming infected with E. coli O104:H4. In all, about 10 people have been hospitalized during this outbreak due to either bloody diarrhea or hemolytic uremic syndrome.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (France): Steak Country brand frozen hamburger steaks sold in Lidl stores are now believed to have caused 19 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome across France - 18 of them in the Nord - Pas-de-Calais - Picardie regions. One case has been reported from Strasbourg.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0904): Salmonella Saint Paul in chilled duck breast pepper and pepper skewers from France; distributed to Belgium and France.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0905): Fosthiazate in nicola potatoes from Spain; distributed to Belgium.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0906): Diarrhoeic shellfish poisoning toxins in whole queen scallops from the UK; distributed to Spain and the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0907): High Enterobacteriaceae count in vanilla ice cream from Italy; distributed to Hungary, Italy and Sweden.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0908): Enterococcus in bottled natural mineral water from Italy; distributed to Germany.

  • Food Safety Alert (PRC): Authorities have halted the sale of 31 brands of water after they failed safety standard tests, including excessively high total bacterial or coliform counts.

  • Food Safety Enforcement Notice (Japan): The Tottori Prefectural Government will ban restaurants and butchers from serving or selling raw beef liver after recent deadly food poisoning cases involving raw beef served at Korean-style barbecue restaurants.

  • Food Safety Alert (Japan): More than six times the legal limit of radioactive caesium has been found in beef from Fukushima prefecture. The meat was sampled from one of 11 cows shipped to Tokyo.

  • Outbreak Alert (PRC): Forty-two kindergarteners in Zhejiang Province have been sickened in an alleged case of food poisoning at an unlicensed kindergarten.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Water Safety Alert (New Zealand): Auckland Council has identified two toxic sea slugs on rocks at Matiatia Bay on Waiheke Island. Beachgoers should avoid touching or handling sea slugs at beaches across the Auckland region. Toxic sea slugs killed several dogs on beaches of Auckland's North Shore during the past two winters.

  • Weight Loss Product Safety Alert (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration warns the public that OxyELITE Pro capsules - marketed as having super weightloss properties - contains therapeutic quantities of the prohibited prescription-only substanct, Yohimbine. In Australia, supply of OxyELITE Pro capsules is illegal.

United States
  • Food Safety Recall: Carolina Pride Foods, Inc. (Greenwood, SC) recalls Carolina Pride Smoked Diced Ham (10-oz pkg; Sell by Sept 23, 2011), Carolina Pride Diced Ham (10-pound cases containing 5 x 2-lb vacuum packages) and Hardee's Smoked Diced Ham (12-lb cases containing 8-oz vacuum packages; Use through date of Nov 9, 2011), because the ham products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled ham was distributed throughout the southeastern US to retail outlets or for institutional use. The 10-oz Carolina Pride packages were shipped to retail locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee; the 10-lb cases of Carolina Pride were shipped to North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia; the Hardee's product was shipped to locations in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

  • Outbreak Alert (Cruises): Passengers and crew on four successive sailings of Lindblad Expeditions' National Geographic Sea Lion suffered from an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea. The outbreak began during the May 21st sailing; 17 of the 61 passengers and 6 of the 24 crew members became ill. The ship failed to notify CDC - as they are required to do - until passengers on the three subsequent sailings of the same ship became ill. The cause of the outbreak is now under investigation.

  • Outbreak Alert (Cruise): Nearly 7% of passengers and 8 crew members on board the Sea Princess (Princess Cruises) became infected with norovirus during the ship's May 30th to June 9th cruise.


Canada
  • Health Product Safety Recall: Health Canada advises the public that the agency's list of unauthorized health products has been updated to include 14 additional products that contain undeclared prescription medication. The newly identified products were removed from sale at Male and Female Harmony retail stores in Richmond and Burnaby, BC and at the Happy Paradise Adult Store in Burnaby.


Europe
Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Chinese Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): On orders from the Department of Health, Chaisentomg Pharmaceutical Factory Limited recalls CHAISENTOMG BABY’S KAM CHIK SAN Powder (all batches), because the product was found to contain excessive lead.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Outbreak Alert (Jamaica): The Ministry of Health reports that twenty (20) patrons of a Chinese restaurant in Mandeville developed food poisoning after consuming fried rice at the restaurant. The ill consumers suffered from diarrhea, vomiting, chills, fever, abdominal pain, dizziness, weakness and headache.

United States
  • Allergy Alert: Kom Son Food Co. (Oakland, CA) recalls Kim So'n Cooked Beef Meat Balls With Chicken & Anchovy Flavored Fish Sauce Added (12 oz. packages), Kim So'n Cooked Pork Meat Balls Anchovy Flavored Fish Sauce Added (12 oz. packages), and Kim So'n Cooked Beef & Tendon Meat Balls With Chicken & Anchovy Flavored Fish Sauce Added (5-lb packages), due to the presence of undeclared wheat. The recalled items were produced on December 9, 2010 through June 9, 2011 and shipped to retail establishments and restaurants in Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and California (San Francisco Bay area, only).

  • Outbreak Alert: The CDC has signaled the presence of a norovirus outbreak in Clanton, Alabama, according to a report in The Clanton Advertiser. Several victims have visited the emergency department of Chilton Medical Center with symptoms of vomiting and/or diarrhea consistent with the viral infection.


Canada
  • Outbreak Alert: Forty-nine cases of hospital-acquired Clostridium difficile infections were diagnosed between January 1st and May 6th, 2011 in Cape Breton (NS). The majority of the cases were concentrated in Cape Breton Regional Hospital (32 cases) and Glace Bay Hospital (11 cases).


Europe
  • Food Safety Recall (Netherlands): Van der Plas recalls Rosabi Sprouts® beet sprouts after the Food Safety Authority finds EHEC-E. coli in a sample of the product. The strain of E. coli is different from the E. coli O104:H4 bacterium that has sickened more than 3,000 people, most of them in Germany.

  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Forty (out of 150) guests at a reception south east of Huddersfield town centre have been stricken with vomiting and diarrhea after eating a meal at the June 3rd event. The source of the outbreak is under investigation.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Outbreak Alert (Mongolia): At least 89 members of a construction crew who were building a road to the Oyu Tolgoi Mine from the village of Khanbogd (Umnugobi Province) developed food poisoning after eating chicken supplied by the Nomads restaurant chain. Two of the ill workers are reported to be in serious condition.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Haiti): The Pan American Health Organization reports that 2,600 people become infected with cholera weekly in Haiti. An increase in the number of new infections coincided with the onset of rain storms. Only 2% of the population have access to safe drinking water.
