  • Food Safety Recall: USDA releases retail distribution list for organic ground beef products recalled by First Class Foods, Inc. due to E. coli O157:H7 contamination.
  • Over-The-Counter Product Safety Recall: Triad Group (Hartland, WI) recalls all lots of Alcohol Prep Pads, Alcohol Swabs and Alcohol SwabSticks due to concerns about contamination with Bacillus cereus. The recalled covers both Sterile-marked and non-sterile products manufactured by Triad Group and marketed under the following private label brands: Cardinal Health, PSS Select, VersaPro, Boca/Ultilet, Moore Medical, Walgreens, CVS and Conzellin. Products covered by this recall were distributed in the USA, Canada and Europe.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: Wal-Mart Canada Corp. recalls Sprouters Northwest brand Deli Sprouts (5 oz.; UPC 0 33383 70267 4; sold up to and including January 3, 2011) because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled sprouts were sold in Wal-Mart stores in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Several illnesses have been linked to consumption of the sprouts in the USA, but there have been no associated illnesses reported in Canada.
  • Over-The-Counter Product Safety Recall: Triad Group (Hartland, WI) recalls all lots of Alcohol Prep Pads, Alcohol Swabs and Alcohol SwabSticks due to concerns about contamination with Bacillus cereus.   • Allergy Alert (France): Auchan recalls Auchan pork spring rolls and chicken spring rolls (Nems au Porc - Nems au Poulet; Best before 12 janvier 2011) because the product may contain undeclared shrimp, fish and crab meat.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Denar Ltd. recalls Denar golden jumbo raisins (200g; Best before 31 January 2012) and Denar dried apricots (200g; Best before 30 October 2011), because the products contain undeclared sulphur dioxide.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Dalby Møkke A/S recalls organic oatmeal (Best before 29-11-2011) because the product may contain the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol. Recalled products were sold under the following brands: Dalby Mill, Best, First Price, Gammelby Mill, and Dawn.
  • Food Safety Withdrawal (UK): Wm. Morrison Supermarkets plc recalls all date codes of Morrisons Unsalted Pistachio Nuts in Shell, 280g because one batch of the nuts was found to contain aflatoxins at levels higher than the regulatory limits.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0009): High content of DINP - di-isononyl phthalate (1.4 %) in lid of jars containing roasted red peppers from Turkey; distributed to Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0010): High content of lead in fruit yoghurt dessert for infants from the Czech Republic; distributed to Poland.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Coles recalls all date codes of Coles Frozen Crumbed Fish Fillets Lemon (1kg and 425g packs), because the product may contain undeclared peanuts.

United States
  • Allergy Alert: Crave Foods (Los Angeles, CA) recalls Crave Pies Chicken Mushroom Pie (6-lb cases containing 12 individual 4-oz packages), because the product contains undeclared monosodium glutamate (MSG). The recalled pies were produced between September 2010 and December 2010 and shipped to distribution centers in California and New York for further retail distribution.
  • Food Safety Recall: Sprouters Northwest, Inc. (Kent, WA) recalls all of its clover sprout and and clover mixed sprout products, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall was initiated after clover sprouts produced by Sprouters Northwest were linked to four cases of Salmonella Newport infections in Washington State and two cases in Oregon. The recalled sprouts were distributed to wholesalers, grocery stores – including QFC and Fred Meyer stores – and restaurants in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and British Columbia.
  • Food Recall: Price Chopper recalls Olivio Premium Spread, 15-ounce tub because droplets of water can surface in the container and may promote mold growth.
  • Food Recall: Food City recalls Food City Fat Free Yogurt, 32 oz (Exp. date 01/21/2011). No reason was given for the recall.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: The Ritedose Corporation recalls 0.083% Albuterol Sulfate Inhalation Solution, 3mL (25, 30, 60 unit dose vials), because the 2.5mg/3mL single use vials are embossed with the wrong concentration and represent a health hazard. The recalled products were distributed across the USA and in Puerto Rico.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. recalls 6 lots of Acetadote® (acetylcysteine) Injection after particulate matter was found in a small number of vials of the injectable pharmaceutical product.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Drive Total Energy recalls Rock Hard Extreme and Passion Coffee dietary supplements after FDA finds undeclared sulfoaildenafil (an analogue of sildenafil) in the product.
  • Dietary Supplement Recall: Giant Eagle recalls Natures Basket Fiber Complex, 100-ct (all lots) due to mislabelling.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Tico's Mexican Foods, Inc. (Denver, CO) that a September 2010 inspection revealed serious deviations from the Seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) Regulation.


Canada

United States
  • Multistate Outbreak. December 28th: Alfalfa sprouts from Tiny Green Organic Farm (Urbana, IL) have been blamed for an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium (Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:-), which has sickened at least 94 people in 16 states and the District of Columbia.
  • West Virginia. December 30th: Food Safety News reports that the Cabell-Huntington County Health Department has vaccinated 236 people after 11 individuals were infected with hepatitis A in the Milton, WV area. The source of the hepatitis outbreak has not been identified.
  • New York, NY. January 3rd: The Queen Mary 2, en route to New York from Southampton, was boarded in St. Kitts by an inspector from the CDC Vessel Sanitation Program after the cruise ship reporting that 185 passengers (out of a total of 2,483) and 29 crew members were suffering from diarrhea and vomiting.


Canada
  • Laval, QC. December 29th: The Cité-de-la-Santé Hospital in Laval has closed its doors to visitors in an attempt to control an outbreak of gastroenteritis that has affected both patients and staff at the hospital. Ambulances have been instructed to avoid the hospital until further notice.
  • Hamilton, ON. January 2nd: Clostridium difficile contributed to the death of a 91-year old woman at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton, bringing the total number of C. difficile related deaths at the facility to eleven since October 2010.


Europe
  • Swansea, Wales, UK. January 3rd: Managers at Morriston Hospital have closed seven wards and asked the public to avoid visiting the hospital as part of a program to contain an outbreak of norovirus gastroenteritis.
  • Bonn/Koblenz, Germany, January 3rd: A passenger who was infected with norovirus before boarding the Prinses Juliana has been identified as the source of an outbreak of gastroenteritis among passengers of the Rhine cruise ship. The ship was quarantined for one day after 50 of the ship's 150 passengers developed diarrhea and vomiting.
  • Kalmykia, Russia. January 3rd: An emergency has been declared after veterinarians detected anthrax in meat from a slaughtered cow. Eight cases of human anthrax also are suspected, but have not yet been confirmed.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Hong Kong. December 30th: The Centre for Food Safety reports that fresh pig liver may be one of the sources of food-borne hepatitis E virus infections in Hong Kong, after determining that 16 out of 51 liver samples from roaster pigs were positive for the virus.
  • Beijing, China. December 31st: A random inspection of 35 rice noodle factories in Dongguan in early December revealed that only 5 of the 35 factories were manufacturing rice noodles that met government standards. Among the problems found during the inspections were noodles made with rotten grain and potentially carcinogenic additives.
  • Cebu, Philippines. January 1st: Twelve cases of diarrhea have been reported in Catmon (Cebu province). One person has died.
  • Harare, Zimbabwe. January 3rd: Cholera has been reported in at least 20 households in the Mbare suburb of Majubheki. According to news reports, the sewage system in Mbare has broken down, resulting in the contamination of drinking water with raw sewage.
  • Jakarta, Indonesia. January 3rd: Six members of one Central Java family died from apparent food poisoning after eating tiwul, a traditional dish made from dried cassava powder.
  • Papua New Guinea. January 3rd: PNG's cholera outbreak has spread to another district in East Sepik, with at least 10 confirmed deaths. In a separate incident, a nurse at Port Moresy General Hospital became infected with cholera after coming into contact with a patient's feces and vomit.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Jamaica. December 23rd: The Ministry of Health is investigating a possible case of food poisoning after eleven persons who shared a meal were taken to St. Ann's Bay hospital. One of the eleven victims was dead on arrival, and the others received treatment. Samples of the meal were taken for testing, but no results have been released as of January 3rd.
  • Dominican Republic. December 30th: Vibrio cholerae, has been found in the drinking water of two villages adjacent to the border with Haiti. At least 20 people in the area are suffering from cholera-like symptoms; 139 cholera cases have been confirmed nationwide.
  • Tambor, Costa Rica. December 31st: Salmonella was found in a sample of chicken served at the Hotel Barceló Playa Tambor after 80 hotel guests complained of gastrointestinal symptoms. Nevertheless, none of the ill guests were found to be infected with Salmonella; instead, they were determined to be suffering from norovirus infections. The hotel was closed on December 26th as a result of the outbreak, and remained closed through the New Year's weekend.
  • Bolivar, Colombia. December 31st: A possible cholera outbreak in temporary shelters in three municipalities has health authorities on the alert. The shelters were opened to house people who were forced to flee areas affected by flooding.
  • Haiti. December 31st: The death toll from Haiti's cholera epidemic has reached 3,333; more than 150,000 infections have been reported.

  • Allergy Alert: Mexicantown Wholesale (Detroit, MI) recalls all lots of cuernos (croissants) manufactured between 6/27/2010 and 12/28/2010 because they may contain undeclared milk. The recalled croissants were sold in retail stores in Michigan only.
  • Allergy Alert: Bach Cúc Beef Jerky, Inc. (South El Monte, CA) recalls Bach Cúc Teriyaki Beef Jerky produced between January 2010 and December 29, 2010 due to the presence of undeclared wheat.
  • Allergy Alert: Pilgrim's Pride (Boaz, AL) recalls Pierce Chicken Uncooked Hot & Spicy Breaded Chicken Wings Drummettes and Wing Portions and Sweet Georgia Brand Uncooked Hot & Spicy Breaded Chicken Wings 1st and 2nd Sections produced between January 1, 2010 and October 6, 2010 because the product contains undeclared egg. The recalled Chicken Wings were distributed to food service distribution centers nationwide for further distribution to restaurants.
  • Allergy Alert: Kroger recalls La Ranchera Wheat Tortillas Original, 33 oz. because the product contains undeclared milk. The recalled tortillas were sold in Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana.
  • Food Safety Recall: Tiny Greens (Urbana, IL) recalls all Alfalfa Sprouts and Spicy Sprouts from November 1st through December 21st, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The sprouts were distributed through various distributors in Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri for redistribution to restaurants and supermarkets near those areas.
  • Food Safety Recall: First Class Foods, Inc. (Hawthorne, CA) recalls Nature's Harvest Organic Ground Beef Brick (16 oz. pkg; Use or freeze by 12/30/10 or 01/08/11), Organic Harvest Organic Ground Beef Brick (16 oz. pkg; Use or freeze by 12/28/10 or 01/06/11) and Nature's Harvest Ground Patty (16 oz. pkg; Use or freeze by 12/30/10 or 01/08/11), because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The ground beef products were shipped to retail establishments in California, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Washington State. Some of the Nature's Harvest ground beef was sold in Harris Teeter supermarkets.
  • Food Safety Recall: Wegmans recalls some packages of Wegmans Food You Feel Good About brand Italian Parsley, Curly Parsley and Cilantro, sold in 0.25-ounce packages in Wegmans stores in the Syracuse (NY), Rochester (NY), Buffalo (NY), Hornell (NY), Geneseo (NY), Erie (PA) and West Erie (PA). The herbs were recalled by J&D Produce (further packed by Boncheff for Wegmans), because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall: BAVAN Food Company (Sacramento, CA) recalls BAVAN Brand Sugar Reori candy imported from India, because the candy contains unacceptable levels of lead.
  • Food Safety Recall: Raley's Family of Fine Stores (West Sacramento, CA) recalls HDC Whole Cantaloupes (available in-store from Dec 14 to Dec 17, 2010), because the cantaloupes may be contaminated with Salmonella. The cantaloupes were sold in Raley's, Bel Air, Nob Hill, and Food Source stores in California.
  • Food Safety Recall: Giant Food Stores advises customers that Terranetti - Roll Steak 6 count, 14 oz. has been recalled because of potential foreign material.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bethel Livestock Farm (Swan Lake, NY) expands its earlier recall of milk products to include Bethel Creamery Pasteurized Whole Organic Milk (Kosher Cholov Yisroel), packaged in half-gallon containers with a use by date of JAN 11 2011), because the milk was improperly pasteurized.
  • Food Safety Advisory: The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and Pepin Heights Orchard are advising consumers to avoid drinking certain lot codes of Pepin Heights Orchard brand apple cider after MDA laboratory tests found the product may be contaminated with a type of mold toxin called patulin. The recalled cider was sold and distributed in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Arizona, Texas and Florida.
  • Food Safety Alert: The Missouri Department of Agriculture's Meat and Poultry Inspection program has temporarily halted custom exempt processing operations at Brinks Meat Processing (Salem, MO) due to unsanitary practices.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: PRock Marketing LLC (Kissimmee, FL) recalls all lots of Fruta Planta and Reduce Weight Fruta Planta weight loss products, after FDA tests confirm that Fruta Planta contains sibutramine. FDA has received multiple reports of adverse effects associated with use of Fruta Planta.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Bausch + Lomb recalls Soothe® Xtra Hydration (XH) eye drops after receiving consumer reports of possible foreign matter in the tips of the bottles. Lab tests conducted by Bausch + Lomb have identified the foreign matter as mold. The recalled eye drops were distributed only in the USA.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Health Canada advises consumers that four probiotic natural health products have been recalled because they contain undeclared milk and/or soy protein.
  • Food Safety Recall: Boncheff Greenhouses (Toronto, ON) recalls Boncheff brand Fresh Cilantro, Fresh Dill, Fresh Curly Parsley and Fresh Italian Parsley, because the herbs may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled fresh herbs were distributed in Ontario. The herbs were supplied to Boncheff by J&D Produce Inc (Texas) and have been recalled by J&D.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Sears Canada recalls reusable shopping bags after testing reveals high levels of lead in the items.


Europe
  • Food Safety Recall: Finnfrost Ltd. recalls Dujardin brand frozen spinach (expiration date 10/25/2012), manufactured by Unifrost NV of Belgium, because the product contains elevated E. coli levels.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall (Singapore): The Health Sciences Authority alerts consumers to the recall by distributors of Care Wipes (Tai Sun Paper Products Pte Ltd), Trihexid Chlorhexidine 0.2% Mouth Rinse (Trident Pharm Pte Ltd) and Perlie White Fluorinze Fluoride Mouth Rinse (Corlison Pte Ltd), because certain batches were found to be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia bacteria.

  • Allergy Alert (December 17th): YNot Foods, Inc. (Madison, WI) recalls Upsides™ Orzo Toscano, distributed by J.R. Simplot Co. through food service and retail channels in Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Mexico, because the products contain undeclared milk and soybean. The affected production codes are 987SEP301001, 987OCT071001 and 987OCT081001.
  • Allergy Alert (December 17th): Tofutti Brands Inc. expands its earlier recall of 4-pack Yours Truly Frozen Dessert Cones to include lot number 2360. The recalled Dessert Cones, which are labeled "Milk-Free," contain undeclared milk
  • Allergy Alert (December 23rd): Brand Castle, LLC recalls its licensed Rice Krispies Treats Holiday Village Kit (expiration dates 15 Oct 2012, 16 Oct 2012 and 02 Nov 2012), distributed only through Michaels retail stores in the USA and Canada, because the icing component contains undeclared egg.
  • Allergy Alert (December 23rd): South Florida Bakery recalls all lot codes of Publix Bakery Coconut Macaroons (Coquitos), because the products contain a small amount of undeclared milk.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 17th): Sally Jackson Cheese (Oroville, WA) recalls all cheese products, including cow, goat and sheep, because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Sally Jackson cheese are made using raw cow, goat and sheep milk and were distributed nationwide to restaurants, distributors and retail stores.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 17th): Winn Meats Co. (Dallas, TX) recalls 25,600 pounds of ground beef products that were improperly labeled and potentially adulterated.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 20th): Bright Water Seafood (Tucker, GA) recalls Buffalo Krab Dip (7-ounce pkg; expiration 12/21/2010) and Southwest Krab Dip (7-ounce pkg; expiration 12/29/2010), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled items were distributed in retail stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Georgia and Virginia.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 20th): Whole Foods Market recalls cheeses supplied by Sally Jackson Cheese (Oroville, WA) and sold in California, Nevada, Washington State and Washington DC, because the cheese may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 23rd): JFC International, Inc. (Los Angeles, CA) recalls all of its uneviscerated Frozen Capelin, because the fish (imported from Vietnam) may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 24th): Rolf's Patisserie (Lincolnwood, IL) recalls all desserts made after November 1, 2010 after the desserts were linked to several outbreaks of Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning. The recalled products include tiramisu, cakes, cobblers, decorated cookies, tarts, pastries and pies and were available through retail (including grocery stores), wholesale and internet sales, and were distributed through a catering service and to institutions such as nursing homes. One hundred cases of food poisoning – three in Illinois (30 illnesses) and one in Wisconsin (70 illnesses) – have been reported from four separate events in November and December.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 24th): Whole Foods Market recalls items supplied by Rolf's Patisserie and sold in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Please follow the live link for a detailed list of recalled items.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 24th): Whole Foods Market recalls all assembled Ginger Bread Houses made after November 1, 2010 and sold in 22 states, because the ginger bread houses were supplied by Rolf's Patisserie.
  • Food Safety Alert (December 27th): FDA advises consumers not to eat Alfalfa Sprouts and Spicy Sprouts (which contain alfalfa sprouts mixed with radish and clover sprouts) from Tiny Greens Organic Farm (Urbana, IL), after preliminary results link the sprouts to a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 28th): J&D Produce Inc. recalls Little Bear brand Fresh Greens packed on November 30th and December 6th after regulators in Quebec detect Salmonella in a sample of curly parsley and regulators in Detroit detect Salmonella in a sample of cilantro. The recalled products were distributed in several US states and in Canada. Please follow the live link for a complete list of the recalled products and their distribution.
  • Food Safety Recall (December 28th): Bethel Livestock Farm (Swan Lake, NY) recalls Bethel Creamery Pasteurized Whole Organic Milk (Kosher Cholov Yisroel), packaged in half-gallon plastic containers (Use by JAN 7 2011), because the milk was improperly pasteurized. The recalled milk was distributed to five locations in the Bronx and in Rockland County.
  • Pet Foods Safety Recall (December 18th): The Kroger Co. recalls select packages of dog foods and cat foods, because the pet foods may contain aflatoxin. Please follow the live link for a complete list of recalled products and distribution details.
  • Medical Device Safety Recall (December 22nd): Abbott Diabetes Care recalls 359 lots of Precision Xtra®, Precision Xceed Pro®, MediSense® Optium™, Optium™, Optium EZ and ReliOn® Ultima Blood Glucose Test Strips because the affected test strips may give falsely low blood glucose results. The recalled test strips were distributed in the USA and Puerto Rico.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (December 22nd): Pfizer recalls Lipitor® 40mg Tablets (Lot 0836050) due to the presence of an uncharacteristic odor.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (December 22nd): RockHard Laboratories recalls specific lot numbers of RockHard Weekend and Pandora dietary supplements after the recalled products were found to contain an analogue of Sildenafil.

United States
  • Arkansas City, KS. November 10th: At least 22 people who attended the Sacred Heart Turkey Dinner on the evening of November 8th have reported becoming ill with vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramps. The outbreak is being investigated by the Kansas Department of Public Health (KDPH) and the City/Cowley County Health Department. Other than attendance at this dinner, no common link has been discovered. KDPH asks that everyone who attended the dinner or consumed food that was prepared for the event complete a survey questionnaire, whether or not they became ill. Data collected in this survey may help to determine the common link behind the outbreak.
  • Olympia, WA. November 10th: Washington state has banned alcoholic energy drinks after nine dangerously drunk college students were hospitalized last month. FDA is reviewing the safety of these beverages.
  • Atlanta, GA. November 12th: CDC reports that 37 cases of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses have now been linked to the consumption of Bravo Farms Dutch Style Raw Milk Gouda Cheese. Cases have been confirmed in Arizona (19), California (3), Colorado (10), New Mexico (3) and Nevada (2). Fifteen people have been hospitalized, and one patient is suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome. There have been no deaths in this outbreak.
  • Alden, MN. November 15th: Freeborne County Public Health and the Minnesota Department of Health are investigating a Norovirus outbreak that affected about 25% of the students at Alden Conger Elementary School last week. About 65 students were sick on Friday (Nov 12th) and 45 stayed at home on Monday.
  • Austin, TX. November 15th: The Texas Department of State Health Services has issued an advisory against consuming blue catfish, channel catfish and smallmouth buffalo from Lake Worth in Tarrant County, after lab testing showed elevated levels of PCBs, aldrin and dieldrin in fish samples collected from the lake.


Canada
  • Hamilton, ON. November 15th: The Clostridium difficile outbreak at St. Joseph's Healthcare has grown to 27 confirmed cases since the beginning of October. The outbreak has been linked to four deaths; 19 cases are currently active. The hospital has called in a special provincial infectious control team for assistance.
  • Peterborough, ON. November 15th: Eleven people remain in isolation at Peterborough Regional Health Centre and one person has died in an combined outbreak of Clostridium difficile, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin resistant enterococci.


Europe
  • Oslo, Norway. November 11th: Three small children from Oslo, Akershus and Østfold are in hospital with hemolytic uremic syndrome after developing an E. coli infection. It's not yet known whether the three cases are related.
  • UK. November 12th: The Salmonella Bareilly outbreak has grown to 225 confirmed cases. Illnesses have been reported in Northern Ireland (3), Wales (5), Scotland (21) and England (196). The outbreak has been linked to consumption of raw or undercooked bean sprouts.
  • Isle of Man. November 15th: Several cases of vomiting and diarrhea are suspected of being caused by an infection with Norovirus.
  • Ireland. November 16th: Researchers have found that the virulent '027' strain of Clostridium difficile is prominent in Irish hospitals. There have been 1,419 cases reported in hospitals in Ireland so far this year.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Port-au-Prince, Haiti. November 16th: Cholera has claimed 1,034 lives in Haiti and has sickened more than 14,500 people in less than one month. The United Nations forecasts that up to 200,000 Haitians may contract the highly contagious disease.

United States
  • Tallahassee, FL. October 28th: Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson today announced that two tomato vendors (Chavita's Produce and Parra Produce) at a private Immokalee farmers market have been served with misdemeanor violation notices for failing to comply with food safety rules involving the sanitizing and packing of tomatoes. In addition, seven Stop Sale Orders were issued for violation of F.S.S. 500.04, Selling of Misbranded Food.
  • St. Paul, MN. October 28th: Minnesota state health officials report that routine disease surveillance has detected seven additional illnesses linked to consumption of raw dairy products from the Hartmann dairy farm in Sibley County. Three of the individuals were infected with Campylobacter jejuni and four with Cryptosporidium. The microbes recovered from the infected individuals were genetic matches to microbes found in animal and environmental samples taken on the Hartmann farm this past summer. In addition, the state has identified 47 other people since Jan. 1, 2010 who became ill after drinking raw milk from a variety of sources throughout the state; none of these 47 cases was part of an identified outbreak (no two cases reported the same source). Most of the individual cases have been in children or young adults.



Canada
  • London, ON. October 29th: At least 25 people were taken ill with suspected norovirus after a Thanksgiving buffet at the Hunt and Country Club in London on October 11th. At least four more people became ill after attending an event for medical residents that was held at the same location on October 13th.


Europe
  • UK. October 28th: The Health Protection Agency's Centre for Infections (CFI) has identified 190 confirmed cases of Salmonella Bareilly in England (183), Wales (5) and Northern Ireland (2) since the beginning of August. Health Protection Scotland has identified 21 cases, bring the outbreak total to 211 confirmed cases so far. In an earlier update, CFI reported having recovered from a sample of bean sprouts a strain of Salmonella Bareilly identical to that found in the outbreak victims.
  • Kharkov, Ukraine. October 28th: Thirty-one people were hospitalized in Kharkov with salmonellosis after eating at the Café Angelica. Three of the 31 hospitalized victims have been released.
  • Ekibastuz, Russia. October 29th: Fifteen cases of hepatitis A have been reported among students attending Secondary School No. 11.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Hong Kong. October 28th: The Centre for Health Protection is investigating an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis involving 25 students aged six to 11 and one staff member at a Kwun Tong primary school.
  • Hong Kong. October 29th: The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) reports that the test results of 115 samples of hairy crabs recently collected at import, wholesale and retail levels for chemical and microbiological tests in a seasonal food surveillance project were all found to be satisfactory.


Australia and New Zealand
  • New South Wales, Australia. October 29th: Authorities are broadening investigations into a range of additional products such as imported slimming tea, coffee and chocolates which have been previously implicated internationally as containing undeclared pharmaceuticals including sibutramine.
