  • Food Safety Recall: USDA releases retail distribution list for organic ground beef products recalled by First Class Foods, Inc. due to E. coli O157:H7 contamination.
  • Over-The-Counter Product Safety Recall: Triad Group (Hartland, WI) recalls all lots of Alcohol Prep Pads, Alcohol Swabs and Alcohol SwabSticks due to concerns about contamination with Bacillus cereus. The recalled covers both Sterile-marked and non-sterile products manufactured by Triad Group and marketed under the following private label brands: Cardinal Health, PSS Select, VersaPro, Boca/Ultilet, Moore Medical, Walgreens, CVS and Conzellin. Products covered by this recall were distributed in the USA, Canada and Europe.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: Wal-Mart Canada Corp. recalls Sprouters Northwest brand Deli Sprouts (5 oz.; UPC 0 33383 70267 4; sold up to and including January 3, 2011) because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled sprouts were sold in Wal-Mart stores in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Several illnesses have been linked to consumption of the sprouts in the USA, but there have been no associated illnesses reported in Canada.
  • Over-The-Counter Product Safety Recall: Triad Group (Hartland, WI) recalls all lots of Alcohol Prep Pads, Alcohol Swabs and Alcohol SwabSticks due to concerns about contamination with Bacillus cereus. The recalled covers both Sterile-marked and non-sterile products manufactured by Triad Group and marketed under the following private label brands: Cardinal Health, PSS Select, VersaPro, Boca/Ultilet, Moore Medical, Walgreens, CVS and Conzellin. Products covered by this recall were distributed in the USA, Canada and Europe.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (France): Auchan recalls Auchan pork spring rolls and chicken spring rolls (Nems au Porc - Nems au Poulet; Best before 12 janvier 2011) because the product may contain undeclared shrimp, fish and crab meat.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Denar Ltd. recalls Denar golden jumbo raisins (200g; Best before 31 January 2012) and Denar dried apricots (200g; Best before 30 October 2011), because the products contain undeclared sulphur dioxide.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Dalby Møkke A/S recalls organic oatmeal (Best before 29-11-2011) because the product may contain the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol. Recalled products were sold under the following brands: Dalby Mill, Best, First Price, Gammelby Mill, and Dawn.
  • Food Safety Withdrawal (UK): Wm. Morrison Supermarkets plc recalls all date codes of Morrisons Unsalted Pistachio Nuts in Shell, 280g because one batch of the nuts was found to contain aflatoxins at levels higher than the regulatory limits.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0009): High content of DINP - di-isononyl phthalate (1.4 %) in lid of jars containing roasted red peppers from Turkey; distributed to Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0010): High content of lead in fruit yoghurt dessert for infants from the Czech Republic; distributed to Poland.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Coles recalls all date codes of Coles Frozen Crumbed Fish Fillets Lemon (1kg and 425g packs), because the product may contain undeclared peanuts.

United States
  • Allergy Alert: Krunchers! Inc. recalls 18 cases of Jays Original Potato Chips (12-ounce bags; Date code JAN16CA542011) due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled snack food was supplied to Walmart. Jays Original Potato Chips are distributed throughout the Midwest in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: The Coca-Cola Company has announced a voluntary withdrawal of 22,000 sets of themed drinking glasses for quality reasons. One glass, which is designed to look like a can of Coca-Cola®, did not meet our quality expectations. While recent tests indicated some cadmium in the decoration on the outside of the glass, the low levels detected do not pose a safety hazard or health threat. The glasses were sold across the United States in retails stores and online, including at Coca-Cola retail stores, coca-colastore.com and other locations.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: Charcuterie La Tour Eiffel recalls sliced and shaved La Belle Bretagne Cooked Garlic Roasted Pork and Tour Eiffel Roasted Pork Old Style(175g packages; Best Before Nov 18, Dec 2 and in variable weight with best before date of Dec 25 and 31). The recalled meats were also sold at deli counters as shaved or sliced La Belle Bretagne Cooked Garlic Roasted Pork with a Best Before date of December 14, 26, January 3 or 9, and Tour Eiffel Roasted Pork Old Style with a Best Before date of December 31. The recall was initiated because the products were insufficiently cooked, and present a health hazard.


Europe


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Safety Recall (Korea): Korea's Food and Drug Administration announces that private label brand "wayijeulrek kongsatang" is recalled due to contamination with metallic particles. The recalled products were sold in Lotte Shopping and Lotte Mart.

United States
  • Atchison, KS. October 8th: The boil water advisory for the City of Atchison has been rescinded. The advisory remains in effect for Atchison County RWD 6, Atchison County RWD 1, Atchison County RWD 3, Atchison County RWD 5C, Doniphan County RWD 3 and the City of Lancaster.
  • Lorain, OH. October 8th: The Lorain County Health Department has confirmed three cases of Salmonella – two teenage children and one adult. The three illnesses appear to be unrelated to a recent spate of illnesses among students at Clearview High School. Health officials are investigating the High School outbreak, the source of which is still unknown.


Europe
  • Paris, France. October 8th: Fourteen cases of food poisoning linked to consumption of the toxic mushroom Amanita phalloides, and 10 cases due to other mushroom species have been reported to poison control centers in four regions of France since mid-September.
  • Butzbach, Germany. October 8th: A "boil water" advisory has been issued for Butzbach after local health authorities detect coliforms in the drinking water.
  • Madrid, Spain. October 8th: Two patients have been hospitalized in Soria and two others in Guadalajara as a result of eating Amanita phalloides, a poisonous mushroom.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Kyodo, Japan. October 9th: The Consumer Affairs Agency announced that it plans to ask manufacturers of margarine and other foodstuffs to voluntarily disclose the amount of trans fat in their products. While it will formalize guidelines for voluntary disclosure by year's end, the agency also is considering legislation to make this kind of labeling mandatory, as is now the case in many other countries.
  • Sichuan Province, China. October 9th: One person is dead and 42 others have been hospitalized in a suspected food poisoning case at the Pearl Garden Hotel in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze. Eight hotel staff, 33 tourists and a child of a hotel employee suffered vomiting and nausea after eating breakfast at the hotel. Ten of the sick tourists were members of a tour group from Shanghai. Nitrite poisoning is suspected, as lab tests showed that noodles served that morning were contaminated with nitrite.
  • Meknès, Morocco. October 8th: Forty-two students, three staff members and a police officer developed food poisoning after eating at a Meknès college internet café. The 46 outbreak victims were taken to hospital for emergency treatment.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Comapa, Mexico. October 9, 2010: At least 1,000 people in six communities in the lower Comapa are suffering from vomiting, diarrhea, fever and aches as a result of drinking contaminated water from rivers and streams. The municipality's drinking water was polluted after the pumping system was destroyed by Hurricane Karl.

United States
  • Allergy Alert: Guadalupana Bakery Corp (Brooklyn, NY) recalls 16-ounce packages of Mexican Bread (Assorted) because the products may contain undeclared eggs. The recalled breads, which were sold in uncoded clear plastic bags, were distributed throughout the five New York City boroughs.
  • Food Safety Recall: Living Foods, Inc. (Ionia, MI) recalls bulk and retail-size packages of Alfalfa Sprouts (4-ounce cups, 4-ounce bags, 1-pound bags and 5-pound bag-in-box bulk containers; Sell by date 10/2/2010) after a package of the Alfalfa Sprouts tested positive for Salmonella. The recalled sprouts were distributed to unnamed retail and food service facilities through wholesale produce suppliers in Michigan.
  • Food Recall: Abbott Laboratories recalls EAS Peak™ brand performance beverages, 16 oz. (see list of flavors and lot numbers) after quality tests indicated the presence of foreign matter in a small number of samples.
  • Food Recall: Food City recalls Food Club Meat Canned Spaghetti Sauce. No details given.
  • Dietary Supplement Recall: Gaspari Nutrition Incorporated (Lakewood, NJ) recalls all lot codes of Novedex XT, which was marketed "for increasing natural testosterone production" and which contains ATD. Gaspari was notified by FDA that ADT does not meet the definition of a dietary ingredient, placing Novedex XT in violation of provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: Albion Fisheries Ltd., Aquatex Seafoods Ltd. and Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC (dba Fanny Bay Oysters) recall oysters, mussels and Gallow mussels, harvested on October 3 and October 4, 2010, because the shellfish may contain naturally-occurring paralytic shellfish toxins that can cause illness if consumed. The recalled oysters and mussels were harvested from Subarea 15-4, and were distributed to various retail and institutional clients in British Columbia.
  • Cosmetic Product Safety Advisory: Health Canada warns the public that Brazilian Blowout Solution, manufactured by Brazilian Blowout of California, has been found to contain 12% formaldehyde – well beyond the 0.2% permitted for use in cosmetics. Consumers receiving hair smoothing treatments using Brazilian Blowout, and stylists performing the treatment may experience reactions of burning eyes, nose, throat, and breathing troubles.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert: The Forge Restaurant (Kells, Co. Meath) recalls The Forge Homemade Apple Tart (all best before dates up to and including 13.10.2010) due to the presence of undeclared egg white protein in the product.
  • Food Safety Withdrawal (UK): Ada's Smoked Catfish (120g; ID Mark WQ411) has been withdrawn from sale because it has been labelled with an identification mark of a food manufacturer that is no longer authorized for use. The product has been found for sale in small independent shops in the London area. Local authorities are being asked to ensure that the product is withdrawn from sale and destroyed.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): DK Trading Esbjerg ApS recalls Løvbjerg fresh turkey breast (whole or cuts), after Salmonella Saint Paul was found in a sample.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1358): Imidacloprid in Thompson green seedless grapes from Chile; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1359): Unauthorised substance sibutramine in instant coffee from Germany; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1360): High content of iodine in sliced dried seaweed from China, via the Netherlands; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1361): Campylobacter in fresh whole chicken from Germany; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1362): Salmonella spp. in salami from Italy; distributed to Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Food Safety Alert (Colombia): The Instituto Nacional de Vigilancia de Medicamentos y Alimentos (Invima) recommends that the public refrain from buying or consuming Patrick Cudahy Inc. pork pepperoni sausage (Lot #0204; expiration date January 18, 2011), imported from the United States, because the pepperoni may be contaminated with Salmonella. The imported sausage is used mainly for the preparation of fast foods, such as pizza.

Europe
  • Cádiz, Spain. September 1885: Cholera invaded the region 125 years ago, with 23 cases and 12 deaths reported in Cadiz; two illnesses and a death have been reported in El Puerto de Santa Maria, and the cholera hospital established in Santo Domingo reported one death.
  • Charente-Maritime, France. September 27th: The winter storm Xynthia has been blamed for the development of Domoic Acid, a neurotoxin produced by red algae, in coquille Saint Jacques (scallops). Domoic acid causes Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) in humans. The harvest season for coquille Saint Jacques usually opens at the beginning of November. More tests will be conducted before then to determine whether or not the shellfish are safe to harvest.
  • Kidlington, UK. September 27th: One dead mouse = £16,821.14, according to Oxford Crown Court.
    That's the amount of the fine assessed against Premier Foods after the company admitted to having failed to maintain acceptable standards at its British Bakeries site in London. Stephen Forse found a dead mouse in a loaf of bread he had purchased on-line through Tesco.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Hong Kong. September 24th: The Centre for Health Protection advises that three women who consumed coral reef fish were diagnosed with ciguatoxin poisoning.
  • Istanbul, Turkey. September 25th: More than Listeria- and Salmonella-contaminated hamburger patties have gone missing after Fasdat Gida, the company responsible for distributing meat to Burger King, cancelled its contract with TT Gida on the grounds that the meat was contaminated. Although Fasdat Gida claimed that the meat was sent to Zeybek Solid Waste Center for safe disposal, there are indications that the meat was sold for human consumption.
  • Srinagar, Pakistan. September 25th: One person is dead and 15 others have been hospitalized after an outbreak of cholera in south Kashmir's Islamabad district. Locals blame contaminated tap water, but officials say that the outbreak victims were infected as a result of drinking water from a nearby stream that was contaminated by runoff resulting from recent heavy downpours.
  • Cebu, Philippines. September 26th: The Department of Health is warning of a rise in the number of cases of diarrhea in Central Visayas. The Cebu City Health Department has recorded 1,443 cases, with four deaths, during the first eight months of this year.
    Doctors are advising the public to use boiled water for drinking.
  • Fayoum, Egypt. September 26th: Five members of a family were taken to hospital with food poisoning after eating a meal of spoiled rice. The five victims include a five-year old child, a teen and three young adults.
  • Taiwan. September 27th: The Department of Health announces that vitamin and food supplements in tablet and capsule form shall be subject to registration and market approval, effective January 1, 2011.
  • Beijing, China. September 27th: As of September 16th, dairy manufacturers are required to keep records of all raw materials purchased, and are required to conduct melamine tests on all products before distributing them in the market. The buying and selling of melamine in China now is on a "real-name" basis to allow the tracing of all products from wholesalers to retailers.
  • Mumbai, India. September 27th: Malegaon blast suspect Pragya Singh Thakur was transferred to JJ Hospital after being diagnosed with typhoid.
  • Muta, Jordan. September 27th: Forty celebrants at an engagement party were diagnosed with food poisoning after eating Aljato purchased from a Muta pastry shop.


Australia and New Zealand
  • New South Wales, Australia. September 26th: The NSW Food Authority has added the following restaurants to its Name and Shame list for a variety of breaches of the Food Standards Code: DJ's Sushi (poor temperature control); Koh-Ya Yakiniku Japanese Restaurant, Neutral Bay (storing raw meat on dirty wet towels directly above ready-to-eat food); Everest Tandoori, Kogarah (mobile phone lying on chopping board that was in use); Balmain Trattoria and Pizzeria (9 breaches, including using food past use-by date and preparing food in basement; and Money Bags Thai Restaurant, Baulkham Hills (3 breaches, including preparing raw prawns and noodles in back courtyard in dirty, unprotected buckets).

Europe
  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): Kenmare Bay Seafoods recalls Kenmare Bay Mussels with White Wine and Shallot Sauce, 400g (use by 14/09/2010) and Kenmare Bay Mussels in Marinade of Honey and Herb, 400g (use by 14/09/2010), due to diarrhetic shellfish poisoning toxin. The toxic mussels were harvest from Ardgroom, County Cork on 24/08/2010. Food business operators who have sold these chilled cooked mussels have been asked to display a Point of Sale notice advising consumers not to eat the affected mussels.
  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Alfmix, Ltd. recalls Den Lille Notte Fabriken Salatmix nut-seed mixture (best before 03/19/2011; Lot 0203) due to deteriorating hygienic quality. The Chinese-manufactured product has been on sale in 28 of the K-Group Citymarket and supermarket stores. Consumers are asked to discard the contents of the packages and return the empty product packages to Alfmix for a credit.
