  • Allergy Alert: McCormick & Company, Incorporated (Sparks, MD) recalls Golden Dipt® Fry Easy All-Purpose Batter, 10 oz (UPC Code 4123470111; “BEST BY” date of NOV 17 11 AH), because a very limited number of packages of Golden Dipt® All-Purpose Batter with this date code contain an undeclared egg ingredient. The recalled packages were distributed to grocery stores in the southeastern USA, including Food City and Publix stores.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation reports that cheeses recalled by Bravo Farms (Traver, CA) were distributed in Alaska. Consumers in the state who have purchased Bravo Farms cheese should discard it or return it to the place of purchase.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): USDA posts a retail distribution list for Calabro All Natural Rotolini Mozzarella & Prosciutto appetizers, recalled by Calabro Cheese due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall: Safeway Food & Drug (10541 Connecticut Avenue, Kensington, MD) recalls 220 pounds of ground beef sold on November 28, 2010 because these products may contain pieces of plastic and/or ink from a pen.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Products Recall: Johnson & Johnson-Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals, Co. recalls twelve MYLANTA® liquid products and one AlteraGEL® liquid product in order to update the labeling for these products.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Friz-it Cold Storage, Inc. (Miami, FL) that a July 2010 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Prime Time Seafood, Inc. (Los Angeles, CA) that a June 2010 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Eagle Products (Chicago, IL) that April through June 2010 inspections of the company's food manufacturing facility revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the facility, in addition to significant violations of FDA's Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) requirements for manufacturing, packing, or holding human food.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Boucherie la Pointe Gourmande (Saint-Basile-le Grand, QC) recalls Saucisse aux fines herbes (sausage with herbs), because the product contains undeclared wheat and milk protein.
  • Food Safety Recall: Poissonnerie S.B.L. Ltée (Beauport, QC) recalls homard en pot de verre (lobster in glass jars) because the product label does not indicate that the contents must be stored under refrigeration ("garder réfrigéré").


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (Finland): Pagen Oy Ab recalls Pågen SpelttiSubs and Pågen Maalaishyvä spelttiviipaleet (best before date between 06.11.2010 and 03.12.2010) because the breads contain undeclared peanuts.
  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): Boots recalls Gü Mug and Chocolate Gift Set (batch codes 144008, 148001, 148002 and 148003), imported from the UK, because of the potential for product spoilage by mold growth.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Warning (France): The public is warned that the consumption of Anabol Tablets, because the product is not authorized for sale in France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1627): Salmonella spp. in spice mixture from Turkey; distributed to Austria.
  • Allergy Alert Safety Notification (EU #2010.1628): Traces of peanut in bread from Sweden; distributed to Denmark and Sweden.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Mount Majura Wines (ACT) Pty Ltd recalls Mount Majura Vineyard - Vino cotto (concentrated grape juice), 2010 production year, because of potential product instability due to fermentation.

United States


Canada
  • Montreal, QC. November 29th: The Canadian government has announced new regulations and amendments to an existing regulation under the Hazardous Products Act that will restrict the amount of lead in a variety of consumer products, including children's toys.


Europe
  • Dublin, Ireland. November 29th: The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has released the results of its recent survey into the microbiological quality of raw chicken fillets that were distributed to butchers in gas-flushed bulk packs and sold loose to consumers. Of the 138 samples test, 15% were unsatisfactory for aerobic colony count; 8% of butchers did not provide a use-by date, as required by law; 23% of butchers provided a use-by date for which they had no basis and at least 23% provided an unrealistically long use-by date.
  • Ostersund, Sweden. November 29th: Residents of Ostersund are living under a "boil water" order, and the city's water supply has been confirmed to contain Cryptosporidium. More than 2,000 people have been infected with the intestinal parasite.
  • Tuva, Russia. November 29th: An outbreak of Hepatitis A has sickened 49 people in two Tuva districts. Quarantine measures have been introduced in schools and institutions.
  • London, UK. November 29th: A potentially lethal strain of antibiotic-resistant E. colibacteria has been discovered at the neonatal ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich. The department has now been closed as staff fight the outbreak.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Bongor, Chad. November 29th: As of November 24th, cholera has killed 166 people and infected 5,787 across Chad. In many cases, traditional burial rituals are contributing to the spread of the epidemic.
  • Danao City, Philippines. November 29th: The Department of Health is monitoring the rising incidents of diarrhea in Danao City after at least 120 illnesses were reported. Of the 120 people who were taken to hospital, 70 remain hospitalized under treatment. Authorities have not yet traced the source of the illnesses.
  • Taiwan. November 30th: Since October, 2010, a total of 15 diarrhea clusters have been reported. 7 clusters were tested positive for gastroenteritis virus infection, including 5 tested positive for norovirus infection and 2 tested positive for norovirus-rotavirus coinfection. 6 clusters occurred in schools and 1 cluster occurred in a densely populated institution. 5 clusters were tested negative for gastroenteritis virus infection. The other remaining 3 clusters are being tested. During the same period last year, 11 diarrhea clusters were reported. 9 clusters were tested positive for gastroenteritis virus infection and all 9 were positive for norovirus infection. Among the clusters, 5 occurred in schools, 1 occurred in a densely populated institution, 1 occurred in a hospital, 1 occurred in a family, and the other occurred at another site.

Australia and New Zealand
  • New South Wales, Australia. November 28th: A Dominos pizza store in Quakers Hill has been fined $116,000 and its director $13,500 for multiple breaches of the New South Wales Food Act after investigations uncovered "appalling conditions" in the store.

Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Cordoba, Argentina. November 27th: An outbreak of trichinosis has been confirmed by the Ministry of Health, with seven cases have been reported in Cordoba City. The infection is thought to have been transmitted by consumption of sausages.
  • Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. November 28th: A seventh case of cholera has been confirmed in the country, which shares the island of Hispanola with Haiti.
  • Port-au-Prince, Haiti. November 29th: The Department of Public Healthreports 1,721 deaths, 75,888 cases of infection and 33,485 hospitalizations have been logged since the onset of the cholera outbreak. The origin of the epidemic has not been pinpointed, but is thought to have been imported, as the cholera strain is similar to the strain that is endemic in Asia.

A Blogger's Food Safety Credo

I believe that every individual is entitled to a reliable supply of safe food and safe drinking water.


I believe that food producers, processors, distributors, transporters and handlers are morally, ethically and legally responsible for ensuring the safety of the food that passes through their hands.

I believe that the responsibility for producing and selling safe food does not vary with the size of the company.

I believe that both imported and domestically produced foods must meet the same high standards of safety.

I believe that legislators are duty-bound to develop and promulgate unambiguous food safety laws, and to update those laws as the situation and the science dictate.

I believe that legislators are duty-bound to provide government agencies with the regulatory tools and financial resources needed to enforce food safety laws.

I believe that government agencies and their personnel are morally and ethically responsible for rigorously enforcing all food safety laws and regulations.

I believe that companies and individuals who knowingly sell or supply contaminated food should be subject to prosecution for reckless endangerment and, if convicted, should be severely punished.

I believe that consumers are entitled to full, factual and prompt information on all food safety recalls and food-borne disease outbreaks.

I believe that consumers have a right to know where their food originated and what ingredients it contains.

I believe that consumers must accept responsibility for safely preparing, handling, and storing food at home.


Sadly, I also believe that we have a long way to go – both in the USA and elsewhere around the world – before my personal food safety credo becomes a reality.

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Recall (Reprise): McNeil Consumer Healthcare has recalled Rolaids® Extra Strength Softchews, Cherry Flavor, 36-count pkg (Lot #0053AG2), distributed in the USA, after consumer complaints of an uncharacteristic consistency or texture were traced to crystallized sugar in the product. The recalled item was manufactured by a third part for McNeil.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Recall (Reprise): McNeil Consumer Healthcare has recalled all product lots of Junior Strength MOTRIN® Caplets, 24-count (distributed in the USA only), and all product lots of Children's BENADRYL® Allergy FASTMELT® Tablets, cherry and grape flavors (distributed in the USA and exported to other countries and territories as shown below), after a review revealed insufficiencies in the development of the manufacturing process.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Recall (Reprise): McNeil Consumer Healthcare has recalled three TYLENOL® Cold Multi-Symptom liquid products in order to update labeling for these products. The recalled products were distributed in the USA.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall: Sobeys Inc. (Stellarton, NS) recalls all in-store packaged assorted cold cut subs containing cooked ham, salami and processed cheese sold in Foodland stores in the Atlantic Provinces (best before dates up to and including November 29, 2010), because they products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled sandwiches are associated with a recall announced late last week by APFL (PEI) of sandwiches made using processed cheese slices that were supplied by Saputo Inc., and were suspected of being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Recall (Reprise): McNeil Consumer Healthcare has recalled all product lots of Children's BENADRYL® Allergy FASTMELT® Tablets, cherry and grape flavors, manufactured in the USA and exported to Canada, after a review revealed insufficiencies in the development of the manufacturing process.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Loblaw Companies Limited recalls Everyday Essentials™ 500mL and Joe Fresh Style™ 350mL Double Wall Stainless Steel Food Jars, because the jars may present a safety hazard. There is a potential for the lid to pop off from the jar when it contains a hot liquid. The recalled thermos-type jars are sold nationally at Loblaw corporate, franchise and affiliated independent stores.

Australia and New Zealand
  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Haigh's Manufacturing Pty Ltd. recalls Haigh's Chocolates Gourmet Christmas Cake (450g cake in clear plastic box; Best before dates 19-Sept-11 and 02-Oct-11), due to the presence of undeclared food additives. The recalled item is sold only through Haigh's stores, and was distributed only in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Recall (Reprise): McNeil Consumer Healthcare has recalled all product lots of Children's BENADRYL® Allergy FASTMELT® Tablets, cherry and grape flavors, manufactured in the USA and exported to Belize, Barbados, Puerto Rico, St. Martin and St. Thomas, after a review revealed insufficiencies in the development of the manufacturing process.

  • Food Safety Recall (Expansion): APFL (Alberton, PEI) has expanded its earlier recall to include additional sandwiches that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The sandwiches contain processed cheese slices recalled by Saputo Inc (Montreal, QC). They were distributed under the Sub Delicious, Circle K, Country Morning and Prepared by APFL brands in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia and may have been distributed in other Atlantic provinces. Please refer to the original and expanded recall notices for a complete list of affected products.
  • Food Safety Recall: Saputo Inc. (Montreal, QC) recalls Faith Farms brand Ribbon Slices Process Cheese Food (2kg; UPC 0 65949 04004 3; Best before 2011/MA/05 REG: 1900; Lot codes 1681, 1682, 1683, 1684 and 1685), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled processed cheese was sold through cash and carry and deli stores, and may also have been sold to food service institutions, restaurants, hospitals, day care centers and nursing homes in Québec, Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. Some of the cheese was sold in variable weights and may no longer carry its original identifying label or lot code information. Check with the place of purchase if you have purchased unlabeled processed cheese slices.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Bug in a Rug (Rockwood, ON) recalls Vulli brand Chan Pie Gnon Cool-it Soother liquid-filled teether (sold between 2008 and 2010 at various specialty baby shops across Canada) after testing by Health Canada determines that the liquid filling is contaminated with mold and with the bacteria Burkholderia cepacia.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert: Pagen recalls Pagen Good Shape and Pagen Cottages Good breads (Date codes: 101027-101123), because the breads may contain traces of peanuts. The affected breads were sold in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway.
  • Allergy Alert (Sweden): Oatly recalls Oatly Havregurt after learning that one of the ingredients contains undeclared milk protein.
  • Food Recall (Denmark): Danton Trading A/S recalls Anto Tzatziki, 400g (Lot #11018; Best before 18-10-2011) due to an error in the expiration date.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): Teofarma s.r.l. recalls certain lots of Hemigoxine Nativelle (0,125 mg tablet, 30/box; Teofarma code CIP 3400933489045) because the similarity in appearance between Hemigoxine Nativelle and Digoxine Nativelle 0.25mg tablets could result in medication errors in hospital settings. The recall is being organized by the product's distributor, C.S.P.

United States
  • Franklin, WI. November 24th: At least 20 attendees at a wedding came down with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps according to the Franklin Health Department. The wedding reception, which took place at the Polish Center of Wisconsin, was catered by Jack Norman Catering of South Milwaukee. The State Lab of Hygiene is testing samples to try to determine the source of the outbreak.
  • Miami, FL. November 25th: Health officials late Thursday (Nov 25th) were investigating the possibility that a passenger suffering from cholera arrived at Miami International Airport on a flight from Haiti. The passenger was ill during the flight and told airline officials that he was a doctor who had been treating cholera patients in Haiti.


Europe
  • Deleitosa, Spain. November 25th: Deleitosa has been without a municipal water supply for five months – ever since the Extremadura Health Service detected high levels of E. coli in the water system.
  • Cardiff, Wales. November 26th: More than 300 children and staff at Meadowlane Primary School in St. Mellons have been screened for hepatitis A after two students at the school were diagnosed with the viral disease. Those in close contact with the two ill pupils and their families have been offered a vaccination.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Agago, Uganda. November 24th: Two more people have died in an outbreak of dysentery that now has claimed 15 lives. Three more people have been quarantined after exhibiting symptoms of the disease.
  • Beijing, China. November 25th: Only 40 percent of melamine-tainted dairy drinks recently found in Central China's Hunan province have been recovered, and authorities are still hunting for the remainder, according to the local food safety commission.
  • Hong Kong. November 26th: According to the findings of a risk assessment study conducted by the Centre for Food Safety to assess the safety of melamine-ware available on local food premises, all the samples tested were found safe for normal food use.
  • Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. November 26th: The cholera outbreak continues to spread, with fears that more than 100 villagers may have died. Cholera on Daru Island has caused 870 illnesses and 32 deaths since the onset of the recent outbreak.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Lake Wiritoa, New Zealand. November 26th: A health warning has been issued over high levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae in the lake. People are advised not to use the water for recreational purposes, and should not allow their pets to come into contact with the water.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Veracruz, Mexico. November 24th: An outbreak of Hepatitis A infections has been reported in the municipality of Filomeno Mata. The illnesses are blamed on sewage-contaminated drinking water.
  • Port-au-Prince, Haiti. November 26th: The cholera death toll in Haiti has risen to 1,603 according to government officials; more than 30,000 patients have been hospitalized for treatment, of which 26,890 recovered and were discharged.

  • Allergy Alert: Creative Food Products Ltd. (Winnipeg, MB) recalls Creative Food Products Cinnamon Loaf (8/box) and Cinnamon Buns (48/box) and Mom's Pantry Cinnamon Rolls (4 Dozen), distributed in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The recalled frozen cinnamon pastries contain undeclared milk.
  • Food Safety Alert: Health Canada advises the public to be aware of the potential health risks associated with consuming human breast milk obtained directly from individuals or through the Internet. There is a potential risk that the milk may be contaminated with viruses such as HIV, or with food poisoning bacteria. Also, traces of certain prescription and non-prescription drugs can be transmitted through human milk.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong and Macao): Jean-Marie Pharmacal Co. Ltd. recalls Delna-U Tablet, Elisa U Tablet and Triganet Tablet, after the Hong Kong Department of Health found a lower than registered concentration of the active ingredient in a sample of Delna-U. The sample contained only 0.69mg of propantheline bromide per tablet instead of the 3mg per tablet dose indicated on the label and registered with the Department of Health. Delna-U was sold in Hong Kong and Macao; the other two products were supplied only in Macao.
  • Food Safety Recall (Guam and Papua New Guinea): Parmalat Australia Ltd. recalls various flavors of Vaalia My First Yoghurt (6 x 60g plastic tubs, overwrapped in cardboard) and Vaalia For Toddlers (6 x 90g plastic tubs, overwrapped in cardboard, due to a packaging fault (a small piece of plastic may fall into the product when removing the lid). The recall covers all use by dates from 13/11/10 to 01/01/11, inclusive. The recalled products were manufactured in Australia and exported to Guam and Papua New Guinea.

  • Allergy Alert: Game Farm Pty. Ltd. recalls Game Farm Quail Medallions Marinated (400g net weight; all best before dates from 24/11/10 to 5/12/2011) due to the presence of undeclared wheat. The recalled product was sold in Harris Farm and local butcher shops in New South Wales and also was distributed in South Australia and Victoria.
  • Food Safety Recall: Parmalat Australia Ltd. recalls various flavors of Vaalia My First Yoghurt (6 x 60g plastic tubs, overwrapped in cardboard) and Vaalia For Toddlers (6 x 90g plastic tubs, overwrapped in cardboard, due to a packaging fault (a small piece of plastic may fall into the product when removing the lid). The recall covers all use by dates from 13/11/10 to 01/01/11, inclusive. The recalled products were sold throughout Australia in small retail outlets and by major retail chains, including Woolworths, Safeway, Coles, Bilo, Metcash (IGA, CCC and ILM), Franklins (NSW only) and Pick'n'pay (QLD only).

  • Food Safety Recall (Update): The following retailers carried Calabro Rotolini Gold Mozzarello & Prosciutto appetizers (8-ounce pkg; UPC 7171500380; Lot #3190), recalled by the manufacturer due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes: Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut; Big Y World Class Market.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): The following retailers are among those who carried raw milk cheeses manufactured by Bravo Farms (Traver, CA) and recalled by the manufacturer due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7 and/or Listeria monocytogenes: Costco (San Diego Region), Whole Foods Market (stores in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington), QFC (a Kroger Company supermarket chain), Save Mart, Raley's, Lucky, Nob Hill Market, Bel Air Market, Nugget Market, and Henry's. The recalled cheeses also were supplied to distributors in California, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, Missouri and Connecticut for distribution to retailers, restaurants and food service operations.   • Medical Device Safety Recall: Advanced Bionics recalls its HiRes 90K cochlear implant device in response to two confirmed instances where the product experienced a malfunction that resulted in its recipients experiencing severe pain, overly loud sounds and/or shocking sensations at 8-10 days after initial activation of the devices.
  • Consumer Alert (EPA): The EPA is warning the public about a potential threat from an illegal pesticide product imported from China. The Fuji Lavender Moth Tablets, which are suspected to contain the toxic active ingredient called para-dichlorobenzene, could be mistaken for candy and are not registered with EPA.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Quaker Canada recalls Quaker Chewy Granola Bars Value Packs (14 bars; 364g; UPC 0 55577 10742 3; all lot codes), because the bars may have been mispacked with Quaker Dipps granola bars that contain peanuts. The recalled product has been distributed nationally.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Recall: McNeil Consumer Healthcare (Canada) recalls Children's Benadryl Allergy Meltaways tablets, because the company has identified quality control concerns on lots that had not been released for sale. No adverse reactins have been reported.
