Typhoid Outbreak - The Philippines

The International Society for Infectious Diseases reported yesterday that the Philippines is experiencing an outbreak of typhoid fever. The outbreak, which is believed to have begun on February 19th, has affected at least 1,041 people so far.

As of yesterday, the outbreak appears to be confined to Calamba City, just south of Manila. Health authorities believe that the disease is being spread through contaminated water.

Hong Kong has issued a typhoid alert for people traveling to the Philippines. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a typhoid vaccine for all unvaccinated travelers to the region, but has not issued a specific travel advisory. Neither has the World Health Organization.

If you have plans to travel to the Philippines, especially to the area south of Manila, drink and brush your teeth with bottled water only. Don't drink the local water – not even in the hotels – and do not allow ice to be added to your beverages. Stay vigilant to stay healthy.
