  • Food Safety Recall: Irish Hills Meat Company of Michigan (Tipton, MI) recalls 900 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled ground beef was produced on May 23 and May 26, and shipped to restaurants in Michigan.

  • Food Safety Recall: Stewart's Shops (Saratoga Springs, NY) recalls 19 ice cream items manufactured in their Greenfield, NY facility since May 19, 2011, due to an equipment failure that may have resulted in the introduction of foreign material into the ice cream. The recalled products - packed in cartons or boxes bearing Plant #36-3918 -were distributed to Stewart's Shops in New York and southern Vermont.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Reed's Inc. (Los Angeles, CA) that an October/November inspection of the company's carbonated beverage and human dietary supplement manufacturing facility revealed significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) in Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements regulations, causing the Reed’s Nausea Relief dietary supplement products manufactured in your facility to be adulterated, in that the dietary supplements have been prepared, packed, or held under conditions that do not meet current good manufacturing practice regulations for dietary supplements.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Family Fresh Pack, LLC (Belleville, WI) that a December 2010/January 2011 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulation for foods.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Natural Choice Distribution Company (Oakland, CA) that a February 2011 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulation for foods.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Manolo and Son, LLC (Alexandria, VA) that a March 2011 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Contes Pasta Company, Inc. (Vineland, NJ) that a January/February 2011 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulation for foods.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Nuvonyx, Inc. DBA Real Aloe, Inc. and U.S. Aloe (Carlsbad, CA) that October 2010 and January 2011 inspections of the company's facility revealed significant violations of Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements (CGMP) regulations.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Import Food Wholesale (St. Paul, MN) that a November 2010 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulation for foods.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Country Maid, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI) that a December 2010 inspection of the company's food processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulation for foods.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Dawn's Foods, Inc. (Portage, WI) that a February 2011 inspection of the company's seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulation for foods.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns ADAO, Inc. (Denver, CO) that a December 2010 inspection of the company's food manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations in manufacturing, packing, or holding of human food, causing the products manufactured in the Denver facility to be adulterated, in that they were prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have been contaminated with filth, or whereby they may have been rendered injurious to health.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Tiny Greens (Urbana, IL) that a December 2010-January 2011 inspection of the company's sprouting facility revealed conditions and practices that are likely to have contaminated the products, causing the sprouts to be adulterated, in that they were packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have been contaminated with filth or rendered injurious to health. Sprouts produced by Tiny Greens were responsible for an outbreak of Salmonella gastroenteritis that sickened 140 people in 26 states and the District of Columbia between November 2010 and February 2011.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Valley Wholesale Produce and Seafood (Winchester, VA) that a March 2011 inspection of the company's produce and seafood warehouse revealed serious violations of the seafood HACCP regulation.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Great Oriental Food Products Co., Ltd. (Mae Sod, Thailand) that a January 2011 inspection of the company's low-acid canned food facility revealed serious deviations from the low-acid canned food regulations.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Guangxi Jisheng Foods Inc. (Hengxian, China) that a January 2011 inspection of the company's low-acid canned food facility revealed serious deviations from the low-acid canned food regulations.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Franklin Foods, Inc. (Delray Beach, FL) that a September/October inspection of the company's food processing facility located in Enosburg Falls, Vermont revealed serious violations of the seafood HACCP regulation, regarding the manufacturing of smoked salmon cream cheese.

  • Food Safety Recall (Norway): Kjøttvirksomheten Kuraas AS (Narvik) has withdrawn a number of meat products after Salmonella was detected in a sample of pork. Please see the official withdrawal notice for distribution details on the seven tons products of withdrawn pork and beef products.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0710): Mercury in frozen red snapper fillets from Madagascar; distributed to France.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0711): Dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorobiphenyls in frozen cooked crabs from Ireland; distributed to France.

  • Outbreak Alert (Russia): Twenty-six children, aged 10 to 13 years, have been hospitalized, and an additional 45 people isolated after the attendees at Sail camp (near Novgorod) were stricken by what is believed to be food poisoning.

  • Food Safety Alert (New Zealand): The Ministry of Agriculture and Food has opened an investigation into Kaiora New Zealand International, a company that is allegedly selling and exporting Heitiki infant formula. The investigation will focus on food safety concerns, as well as possible breaches of requirements such as labeling, advertising, and claims.

  • Shellfish Safety Advisory (New Zealand): Upper Whangarei Harbour has been closed for gathering shellfish until July 2nd, after high levels of norovirus were found in Whangarei wastewater and the upper harbour during a May 2nd storm.

  • Food Safety Alert: CFIA is warning the public that the cancer-causing chemical DEHP (Di-Ethyl Hexyl Phthalate) is being added to certain foods and beverages imported from Taiwan. CFIA and Health Canada are working with importers and international health agencies to identify affected products.

  • Food Safety Recall/Alert (Singapore): Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) suspends the import of Sunlight Brand beverages (product of Taiwan) after detecting DEHP in a sample of Sunlight Brand Star Fruit Juice. AVA has instructed the importer to remove the product from the market. Consumers who may have purchased the product are advised to discard it.

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Cerebos (Hong Kong) Ltd recalls Brand's Calcium Grow Chewable Tablets (product of Taiwan), because the strawberry juice powder and yogurt powder used as flavoring agents have been reported to be contaminated by DEHP.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Sara Lee recalls Sara Lee Gourmet Beef Lasagne and Sara Lee Gourmet Vegetable Lasagne, due to possible contamination with foreign material, including metal, plastic and cloth. The recalled products were sold in all major supermarkets nationwide, including Countdown, Woolworths, Foodtown, New World, Pak'n Save, Fresh Choice, and SuperValue, and were supplied to food service operators.

  • Allergy Alert: Fresh and Ready Foods (San Fernando, CA) recalls Asian Chicken Noodle Salad (7-oz. boxes; Sell by May 27, 28, 29 and 30), because the products contain egg. The recalled items were sold as buy-on-board items on domestic United Airlines flights.

  • Allergy Alert: Transpecos Foods, LP (Pecos, TX) recalls Southern Home Diced, Shurfine, Food Club, Better Valu Breaded and Best Choice Gourmet varieties of Onion Rings, because the products may contain undeclared milk and/or egg. The recalled onion rings were distributed variously in South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Texas, Alabama, New Jersey, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri and Vermont.   • Food Safety Recall: J&J Produce, Blackwater Produce and Primo Produce recall fresh whole cucumbers, sold under several different brand names, because the cucumbers may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled cucumbers were distributed to retailers, including Giant Eagle, and to foodservice distribution centers, including Monarch Food Group/US Foodservice for further distribution.

  • Outbreak Alert: Infected chicks and ducklings are behind an eleven-state outbreak of Salmonella Altona, which has infected 25 people, ranging from less than one year old to 84 years old. Eight of the victims have been hospitalized. The first reported illness began on February 25th. The infected chicks and ducklings all were purchased from multiple locations of a nationwide agriculture feed store chain, and were intended either as pets or for backyard flocks to produce eggs. Illnesses have been confirmed from Indiana (1), Kentucky (3), Maryland (2), Minnesota (1), North Carolina (4), New York (1), Ohio (7), Pennsylvania (2), Tennessee (2), Virginia (1) and Vermont (1).


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Tokushin Enterprises Ltd. recalls Kasugai Peanut & You (KSG-MIX SEAWEED PEANUTS CRACKER), 98-gram packages, because the product contains undeclared fish and shellfish. The recalled crackers were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba Ontario and Quebec.

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Christiansen & Partners recalls several varieties of Booja Booja Chocolate Truffles, because the products contain undeclared milk.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Anemonerne.dk and Fairfood recall Organic Spanish Cucumbers (Lot No. 11 119 4005 00), after German authorities detect E. coli O104:H4 in the cucumbers.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Mango recalls school cucumbers and ordinary cucumbers sold during May 2011, after German authorities detect E. coli in a cucumber which originated either in the Netherlands or in Denmark.

  • Food Recall (Belgium): Tip Top recalls Tip Top brand Pignon de pin/Pine Nuts (Exp. date: 04-11-2011), because the nuts can leave a bitter taste in the mouths of certain consumers. There is no health risk associated with this recall.

  • Food Safety Alert (Philippines): The Food and Drug Administration advises that it is monitoring sports drinks, fruit juices and soft drinks imported from Taiwan, after receiving information that some of these products may be contaminated with the cancer-causing agent DEHP.

  • Food Safety Recall (China): A Shanghai importer is recalling YES brand sports drinks (made in Taiwan), because the beverages may be contaminated with the carcinogen DEHP.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Guam): A recent outbreak of food poisoning that struck 300 students at five southern schools in Guam was due to toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus. Egg salad sandwiches served during breakfast at the schools were found to contain the bacteria, according to lab analyses reported by the Hawaii Department of Health. All five schools were catered by King's Restaurant.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia and New Zealand): Sara Lee Australia Pty Ltd. recalls Sara Lee Beef Lasagne (1 kg, 2 kg & 3 x 200g sizes; Best before 25 NOV 2012), because the product may contain foreign matter, including metal, plastic and/or cloth contamination. The recalled products were distributed nationally to major supermarkets, independent grocery stores and food service outlets, and were exported to New Zealand.

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Mures Fishing Pty Ltd. recalls Atlantic Salmon Terrine, 180g (vacuum sealed plastic package; Use by 31.05.11), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold in delicatessens, independent supermarkets and directly from Mures' outlets in Tasmania.

  • Recreational Water Safety Alert (Missouri): Swimming beaches at three Missouri parks are closed due to elevated E. coli levels.

  • Recreational Water Safety Alert (Oregon): Oregon has issued a public health advisory for ocean waters at Indian Beach in Clatsop County, due to higher-than-normal levels of fecal bacteria.

  • Food Safety Advisory: Taiwan has advised US heath authorities that some bottled drinks imported into the USA from Taiwan may be contaminated with the cancer-causing chemical DEHP.

  • Allergy Alert: Nikita Foods & Spices Ltd. recalls Kamal Premium Quality Spice Dumpling - Punjabi Wadi (200g and 400g sizes) due to the presence of undeclared gluten.

  • Food Safety Recall: Les Aliments Edesia Foods Inc. (Saint-Hubert, QC) expands its earlier recall of Listeria monocytogenes-contaminated meat products from Italy to include both of the following products: Fumagalli La Salumeria Seasoned Dry Cured Pork Loin (1.2-1.6kg or sliced at retail; Best before 30.08.2011; Batch 119062) and Fimagalli Pronto e Fresco Spianata Romana Salami (100g; Best before 05.07.2011; Batch 119066). The recalled products were distributed only in Quebec.

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Channell's Norfolk Preserves Ltd. advises that it is relabeling Channell's Sticky Rib Sauce and Channell's Barbecue Sauce, because they may contain the undeclared antigens soy, fish, sesame, wheat and/or barley.

  • Food Safety Alert (UK): Taiwan's Department of Health warns that Bubble Tea ingredients exported to the UK from Taiwan are suspected to be contaminnted by the cancer-causing chemical DEHP.

  • Food Safety Recall (Luxembourg): Delhaize recalls DelhaizeTrances de Nazareth (180g; all dates), Delhaize Plateau de fromage Belgo-Français (400g; Best before 18/04/2011 and 02/05/2011) Nazareth Fromage Nazareth en Bloc (250g; all dates) and Brugge Kaas Plateau de fromage Brugge (450g; Best before 13/04/2011), because the products may contain Listeria monocytogenes.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0695): Mold infestation in chilled white cheese from Germany; distributed to Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany and Italy.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2011.0696): Unauthorized synephrine in food supplement from Canada; distributed to France.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0697): Salmonella Heidelberg in frozen chicken breasts from Brazil; distributed to Denmark.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2011.0698): Unauthorized idebenone, vinpocetine, vincamine and vinburnine in food supplement from the USA, via Hungary; distributed to Cyprus.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0699): Unsuitable organoleptic characteristics of long grain rice from Poland; distributed to Slovakia.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Germany): Cucumbers imported into Germany from Spain are suspected to be the source of the outbreak of E. coli O104 disease, which has killed four people and sickened several hundred across several states of Germany.

  • Food Safety Alert (Multiple countries): The Taiwan Department of Health has informed health authorities in China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and the Philippines that some bottled drinks exported to these countries from Taiwan may be contaminated with the cancer-causing chemical, DEHP. Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety urges the public not to consume Speed Sports Drink (600ml; Expiry February 14, 2013), Speed Sports Drink, Lemon Flavour (600 ml; Expiry February 14, 2013), and Dong Nung 1000 Sports Drink / Yuet's Sports Drink (Expiry March 21, 2013).

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Singapore): The Health Sciences Authority advises the public that Metabolic Advantage (manufactured by Enzymatic Therapy, Inc. in the USA) has been withdrawn, because it contains the unauthorized substances, thyroid gland and thyroid hormones.

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Enrico's Kitchens recalls a number of Frozen Ready-to-eat pizza and pasta products (best before 25 May 2012), because the products may be contaminated with foreign matter, including metal, plastic and cloth.   • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Globe All Wellness, LLC (Hollywood, FL) recalls Slim Xtreme™ Herbal Slimming Capsule (30 capsules/bottle; all lots), because the product contains undeclared simbutramine.

  • Cosmetic Product Safety Alert: Minnesota Department of Health warns residents to stop using some types of skin lightening products, after testing revealed that they may contain dangerous levels of mercury.

  • Outbreak Alert: Three Ouachita Christian School students were admitted to local hospitals last week after contracting infections with E. coli O157:H7. The students had been playing in a mud pit on a farm where an end-of-the-year party was being held.

  • Food Safety Recall: Les Aliments Edesia Foods Inc. (Saint-Hubert, QC) recalls Fumagalli La Salumeria brand Seasoned Dry Cured Pork Loin (Batch 119062; Best before 30.08.2011), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was distributed in Quebec.

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Booja Booja recalls Hazelnut Crunch, Around Midnight Espresso, Cognac Banana, and Champagne chocolate truffles (all date codes and all pack sizes), because the products may contain undeclared milk.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Rieber & Son Denmark A/S recalls Salad Master Remoulade (400g; Best before 30/8/2011; Lot #L32), due to the development of gas in the packages, as a result of the growth of yeasts and lactic acid bacteria.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Nature Drogeriet A/S recalls Paradisfrø (Item #4501), because the seeds are rated as unacceptable for human consumption.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (France): The Health Directorate advises the public that Burnermax 3000, sold as a weight-loss dietary supplement, has not been authorized for use or sale in France. The product was linked to a report of a heart attack in a 27-year old man with no prior history of coronary problems or risk factors. The man had been consuming Burnermax 3000 on a regular basis for three weeks.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2011.0688): Unauthorized vinpocetine in food supplements from the United States, via Hungary; distributed to Cyprus.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0689): Prohibited metronidazole in honey from China; distributed in Belgium and Poland.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2011.0691): Vanadium in multi-vitamins and minerals food supplements from the United States, via Hungary; distributed to Cyprus.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0692): Salmonella in desiccated coconut from Vietnam, via the Netherlands; distributed to Estonia.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0693): Omethoate in water mimosa from Thailand; distributed to the Netherlands.

  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0694): Salmonella anatum, Salmonella Schwarzengrund, Salmonella Galiema, Salmonella Haifa, and Salmonella Typhimurium in dog chews from Bahrain; distributed to Germany.

  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Health officials have confirmed an outbreak of seven cases of E. coli infections among students at Redfield Edge Primary School.

  • Outbreak Alert (France/Jersey): A group of 56 children from Granville developed vomiting while on a day trip to Jersey. The cause of the outbreak is under investigation.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Germany): Three people have died, 80 are confirmed with E. coli O104, and an additional 350 cases are under investigation in this multi-state outbreak.

  • Food Safety Recall (Taiwan): The Department of Health and the Consumer Protection Commission has ordered several dozen beverages and foodstuffs be removed from store shelves, because they may contain the plasticizing agent, Di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, or DEHP.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Illinois): The number of Salmonella Typhimurium cases that appear to be linked to Portillo's restaurant in St. Charles, IL stands at 14 confirmed cases from 4 Illinois counties - Kane (8), DuPage (4), Chicago (1), and DeKalb (1) - and one confirmed case from Minnesota. Epidemiological evidence suggests salad as the source.

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection urges the public not to collect and eat wild mushrooms from parks or the countryside, after receiving reports of two individuals who became ill after eating wild mushrooms picked from Lung Tsui Park.

  • Disinfectant Solution Safety Recall (Hong Kong): B. Braun Medical AG recalls three batches of Braunoderm iodine solution after the manufacturer found that the level of available iodine in some batches fell slightly under expected concentration of active ingredient before the expiry date was reached. The only recalled batch that was imported into Hong Kong was: Braunoderm Ungef Spruehfl 'DE' 250ml (Article No.: 3881105, Batch No.: 0253M14)

  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Abu Dhabi): Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority has ordered punitive closure of the Madinat Zayed branch of Al Ibrahimi restaurant (license number 1040214) in the capital, after an inspection revealed several violations of the rules and regulations governing food safety.

  • Outbreak Alert (Indonesia): Around 300 employees of PT Shang J Fung (Cikupa, Tangerang) developed nausea and vomiting after eating food supplied by Asep Sawawi's catering company. The affected employees were taken to hospital for treatment.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Outbreak Alert (Mexico): An infectious diseases specialist in Mexico City reports having confirmed 14 cases of typhoid since March 2011 - 6 with blood cultures and 8 in stool samples.

  • Outbreak Alert (Germany): Uncooked vegetables are suspected to be the source of a dangerous outbreak of Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli across Germany. Two victims of the outbreak have been placed on artificial respirators. Forty people are being treated in Hamburg; Frankfurt reports 10 people hospitalized - 4 of them in intensive care - and an additional 50 people reporting mild symptoms. Cases of the infection also have been reported in Rostock, Lower Saxony, Bremen and Schleswig Holstein.

  • Outbreak Alert (Germany): Fifty-seven patients and 30 employees of the 300-bed Robert Koch Hospital in Gehrden (Hanover) have been infected with norovirus. The source of the infection apparently was an employee in the hospital kitchen. An additional 11 patients and one staff member in the hospital's sister clinic in Springe also are ill. The hospital kitchen supplies both facilities.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Outbreak Alert (Sudan): An outbreak of diarrhea at the Otash displaced people camp in South Darfur has claimed the lives of ten children daily in three out of 11 centers in the camp.

  • Outbreak Alert (India): Four family members are dead from suspected food poisoning and four other people have been admitted to hospital in critical condition after participating in a family function in Biranwadi village.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0672): Sulfathiazole unauthorized in honey from Italy; distributed to Japan, Thailand and countries in Europe as well as to the USA.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Greens General Foods Pty Ltd. recalls Black & Gold Fruity Rings Breakfast Cereal (300g cardboard box; Best before 23 Mar 2012 and 24 Mar 2012), because the cereal may contain fine wire thread. The recalled products were sold nationally in IGA, Foodworks, Friendly Grocers and other independent supermarkets, and may have been exported.

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Coles Supermarkets Limited recalls Coles Frooty Rings Breakfast Cereal (300g cardboard box; Best before 22 Feb 2012, 23 Feb 2102, 24 Feb 2012 and 24 Mar 2012), because the cereal may contain wire contamination. The recalled product was distributed nationally to all Coles supermarkets, Bi-Lo and Pick N' Pay stores.

  • Food Safety News (Australia): An analysis of two samples of human feces fertilizer (also known as 'night soil') has revealed traces of an infectious virus, Salmonella and Blastocystis. According to an article in The Sunday Telegraph, fertilizers made from human waste are being used on 20 farms in New South Wales, and may also be in use on vegetable and dairy farms in Queensland.

  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): Timaru Hospital (South Canterbury District) has been closed to non-essential visitors while it deals with a suspected outbreak of norovirus in three wards. Fifteen patients and six staff members on these wards have reported suffering from vomiting and/or diarrhea since Saturday.
