United States
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): The Suter Company, Inc. (Sycamore, IL) recalls approximately 72,000 pounds of canned chicken salad products that may contain pieces of hard plastic. The cans of chicken salad bear establishment number P-169 and lot code 0225XXQBC. The recalled items include Bumble Bee Lunch on the Run Chicken Salad Complete Lunch Kit (8.2 oz package; best by 07/11) and Bumble Bee Chicken Salad With Crackers (3.5 oz package; best by 01/12 or 02/12). The products were assembled between August 14th and 28th, and shipped to distributors and retail stores nationwide, including Giant Eagle and Food City.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): Atlas Walnut Co. of California recalls walnut halves and pieces because a shipment sent to another manufacturer has tested positive for Salmonella. The recalled nuts were distributed to distributors (including Monarch Food Group) and retailers nationwide. Affected retailers include Food City and Kroger (stores located in North Carolina, Virginia, Eastern West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Ohio).


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) warns the public not to consume in-store packaged sandwiches and subs containing processed cheese that were sold at certain Metro, Richelieu, AMI and Extra stores in Quebec (best before dates up to and including December 6, 2010), because the products may contain Listeria monocytogenes. The sandwiches and subs were made with processed cheese slices that were recalled by Saputo Inc. on December 2, 2010.

Australia and New Zealand
  • Food Supplement Safety Recall: Tek Shing Trading Pty Ltd recalls Weight and Blood Fat Reducing Coffee (180g cardboard box; best before 2012/03/17) and Coffee Fast (180g cardboard box; best before 2012/04/11), because the products contain the prescription medication sibutramine. The recalled weight loss products were distributed in Asian grocery stores in Sydney, NSW.

United States
  • Los Angeles, CA. December 1st: An employee of Jerry's Deli in Westwood (10925 Weyburn Ave) has been diagnosed with acute hepatitis A. The LA Department of Public Health recommends that patrons who ate hot or cold sandwiches at the restaurant or who ate catered sandwiches from this location on November 18, 21, 23 or 24 should receive an immune globulin shot or hepatitis A vaccination no later than 14 days after their exposure.
  • Ashland, KY. December 1st: The Ashland-Boyd County Health Department has confirmed a sixth case of hepatitis A.


Europe
  • UK. December 3rd: Over the last two years the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has noticed an increase in the number of outbreaks of Campylobacter infections associated with the consumption of poultry liver pâté/parfait at a number of catering establishments. HPA urges caterers, chefs and consumers to thoroughly cook chicken livers in order to avoid the risk of Campylobacter infections from these products.
  • Cardiff, Wales, UK. December 3rd: Health officials are investigating an outbreak of gastroenteritis, thought to be due to norovirus, which has affected 127 guests at the Park Plaza hotel in Cardiff between November 24th and 27th.
  • Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, UK. December 3rd: Health inspectors found live rodents in a gnawed box of dried noodles, and dead mice rotting under freezers, during a routine inspection of the Dragon Palace. The shop has been ordered to close until it meets hygiene standards, and the Chinese takeaway restaurant may face criminal charges.
  • Vladimir region, Russia. December 5th: An outbreak of gastroenteritis among 9th-grade students has been traced to norovirus, possibly spread through the school canteen.



Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Shanghai, China. December 1st: More than 90 employees of a Dutch company in Shanghai were sickened after having lunch at the dining hall of Hunter Douglas Architectural Products (China) Co. Ltd. Nitrite poisoning is suspected.
  • Beijing, China. December 1st: The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine advise consumers not to believe blinding in foreign dairy items after 670 tons of imported milk products were found to be substandard from March to August of 2010. About 70% of the substandard products were baby formulas, which contained excessive fungi or heavy metals.
  • Hong Kong. December 2nd: The Chinese Medicine Ordinance concerning the mandatory registration of proprietary Chinese medicines becomes effective December 3rd.
  • Damietta, Egypt. December 5th: Six people were taken ill after drinking juice that had passed its expiration date.
  • Fiq, Ethiopia. December 5th: An outbreak of cholera has been in progress for the past month. A blockade of the movement of people and goods in the region, together with a lack of clean drinking water, have delayed news of the outbreak and exacerbated the problem.
  • Makkah, Saudi Arabia. December 5th: Unlicensed and unhygienic roadside food vendors have become a health hazard for pilgrims during the annual Haj season.

Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Haiti. December 4th: As of November 30th, the cumulative number of cholera related deaths in Haiti was reported to be 1,882. According the Ministry of Health, 84,391 hospital visits have been recorded; 39,010 people have been hospitalized due to cholera and 1,034 remain in hospital.
  • Dominican Republic. December 4th: The number of confirmed cases of cholera in Haiti's next door neighbor has risen to 16. There have been no cholera-related deaths in the Dominican Republic.

  • Food Safety Recall: The Suter Company, Inc. (Sycamore, IL) recalls approximately 72,000 pounds of canned chicken salad products that may contain foreign materials. The recall covers 8.2-ounce packages of Bumble Bee Lunch On The Run Chicken Salad Complete Lunch Kit (Best by date of 08/11) and 3.5-ounce packages of Bumble Bee Chicken Salad With Crackers (Best By date of 02/12). The cans bear lot code 0225XXQB. The chicken salad products were assembled between Aug. 14 and Aug 28, 2010 and shipped to distributors and retail stores nationwide.


Canada
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): CFIA has updated the list of sandwich products that contain processed cheese slices recalled by Saputo Inc. (Montreal, QC) on December 2, 2010. The agency will continue to monitor the progress of the recall and will update the list of products as more are identified.

  • Allergy Alert: Diana's Mexican Food Products, Inc. (Lawndale, CA) recalls approximately 41,670 pounds of Diana's Central Meat Market Chicken Tamales (wrapped in rice paper), due to the presence of undeclared whey. The tamales were produced between February 2010 and December 2, 2010 and were distributed to restaurants in California.
  • Food Safety Recall: Hillcrest Dairy (Plant #36-3108, Moravia, NY) recalls Hillcrest Dairy Heavy Cream (Sell by 12/18/10), due to improper pasteurization. The recalled cream was distributed in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.
  • Food Safety Recall: Atlas Walnut Co. of California recalls walnut halves and pieces because a shipment sent to another manufacturer has tested positive for Salmonella. Azar Nut Co., which receives product from Atlas, has recalled the products that it received from Atlas.
  • Food Recall/Withdrawal: Food City reports that Duchess Mini Chocolate Donut Bags, 10 oz., have been withdrawn/recalled. No details are available.
  • Food Recall/Withdrawal: Food City reports that its supplier has recalled/withdrawn several Tropical Nut & Fruit items, including Walnut Halves/Pieces Tub (6 oz.), Hi Energy Tub (12 oz.), Perfectly Fit Tub (11 oz.), Hi Energy Mix (25 lb bulk) and Siena Cream Crunch Natural (25 lb. bulk). This announcement may be related to the Atlas walnut recall, reported above.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert (Update): Grandpa Jimmy's Scottish Bakery (Grand Bend, ON) amends its earlier recall notice to correct the weights for three of the products. The recalled items were distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) warns the public not to consume an extensive list of prepared sandwich products (follow live link for complete list of affected products), because the affected products were made using processed cheese slices recalled by Saputo, Inc. on December 2, 2010. CFIA continues to monitor the situation and will update the list as and when more products are recalled. The recalled items were sold at Foodland stores in the Atlantic Provinces, at specific Sobey's stores, in vending machines, in convenience stores, from catering trucks and through other retail and food service operations across Canada. Affected brand names include Best Value, Hygaard, Quality Fast Foods, Deli Chef, JMS, Hamish & Enzo, J.C.A. Food Services, Majestic Fresh Foods 4U, Country Morning, Circle K Grab N' Go and Sub Delicious.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Avon Canada Inc. recalls several shades of Healthy Makeup Eye Shadows by Avon for missing preservative ingredients. The lack of preservative poses a risk of eye irritation or eye infections. In addition, the Violet Dusk shade is recalled because it contains an incorrect color pigment ingredient.


Europe
  • Food Safety Seizure (Belgium): Three tonnes of meat were seized from the Palais du Frais wholesaler in Bray, due to several infractions.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Safety Recall (South Korea): The Korea Food and Drug Administration reports the recall of CJW Gold Anchovy Sauce (Produced 2010.11.13; Expiry 12.5.12) after coliforms were found in the product.

  • Food Safety Recall: N.Y. Gourmet Salads, Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) recalls an undetermined quantity of various meat and poultry products that were produced between March 11, 2010 and October 29, 2010 without federal inspection and were distributed to retail establishments in New York. These products were the subject of a public health alert issued on October 30th. Included in the list of recalled items are 4.5, 5.0 and/or 6.0 pound containers of Lemon Grilled Chicken, Meatballs, Meatballs and Sauce, Swedish Meatballs, Sausage and Peppers, Chicken Salad, Grilled Chicken, Grilled Chicken Plain, Breaded Chicken, Stuffed Cabbage, Teriyaki Grilled Chicken and Chopped Chicken Liver.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation has confirmed that non-organic ground nutmeg, which was recalled recently by Frontier Natural Products Co-op due to potential Salmonella contamination, was distributed in Alaska.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Grandpa Jimmy's Scottish Bakery (Grand Bend, ON) recalls several bakery products due to the presence of undeclared milk or sulphites. The recalled items, which include Cherry Cake, Dark Christmas Cake, Glasgow Gingerbread, Light Christmas Cake, Dundee Cake and Sultana Cake, were distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall (Expansion): Saputo, Inc. (Montreal, QC) expands its earlier recall of processed cheese slice products to include four additional Faith Farms brand process cheese products, St.-Albert Ribbon Slices Process Cheese Food, unbranded PCF-Colored Pullman, and three Sunspun brand process cheese products. The recalled process cheese foods were distributed nationally through retailers, cash & carry stores and delis, and may also have been sold to food service institutions such as restaurants, hospitals, day care centres and nursing homes. The recalled items may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.


Europe
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): InBev recalls some batches of Stella Artois beer (250mL bottles) because they might contain small pieces of glass. Some of the recalled beer was distributed to Sainsbury's.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Coop Danmark A/S recalls oksecuvetter, 1.2kg (Expiry 30 December 2010), imported from Germany by Danish Crown amba, due to contamination with Salmonella. The recalled beef was sold in Superbrugsen and Kvickly stores in certain cities.
  • Food Safety Recall (Italy): Ipermercato Gros Cidac s.r.l. advises its customers that Mellin spa recalls Mellin pasta (Lot #302) after finding a small amount of piperonyl butoxide in the product.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2010.1641): Salmonella Agona in rapemeal from Belgium; distributed to France.
  • Consumer Product Safety Notification (EU #2010.1642): Migration of primary aromatic amines from black nylon ladles from China, via the Czech Republic; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2010.1643): High content of iodine in seaweed based food supplement from the United Kingdom; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1644): Cadmium in frozen whole squids (Loligo douvaceli) from India; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1645): Botulinum toxin (presence) in asparagus sauce from Italy; distributed to Italy. One illness has been reported to be linked to consumption of the product, which was recalled by the manufacturer, Apicoltura Brezzo srl. The recalled Crema di asparagi was packed in glass jars (Lot #2449 and 1619; expiration dates of 30/09/2012 and 16/06/2012, respectively).
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1646): Carbendazim in golden raisins from Iran; distributed to Lithuania.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Cosmetic Product Safety Recall: Privity Pty Ltd (trading as HairCare Australia) recalls Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Solution (all batches), after tests show that the product contains free formaldehyde in excess of the level considered to be safe. The product was distributed nationally to various hair dressing salons and was not available for direct sale to consumers.

  • Food Safety Recall (Update): Ground nutmeg, which was recalled on November 30th by Frontier Natural Products Co-op (Norway, IA) due to possible contamination with Salmonella, was sold under the Frontier brand in Fred Meyer, City Market and King Soopers stores and under the Whole Foods 365 brand in Whole Foods Market stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: Rushing Waters Fisheries of Palmyra recalls smoked trout spread (Lot #00694; sell by Dec 13, 2010) and smoked salmon spread (Lot #50012; sell by Dec 11, 2010), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. At least some of the 225 pounds of recalled smoked spreads were sold in Whole Foods Market stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bauman Orchards, Inc. (Rittman, OH) recalls approximately 50,000 gallons of Apple Cider because the cider was underprocessed. The recalled cider was packaged in gallon and half-gallon containers bearing manufacturing dates from September 1st through December 5th, 2010 and distributed to stores in Ohio.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Dépanneur du Boisé Marieville (Marieville, QC) recalls banana cake (gâteau quatre-quarts aux bananes due to the presence of undeclared soy protein, and carrot & pineapple cake (gâteau quatre-quarts aux carottes et ananas) due to the presence of undeclared milk and soy proteins.
  • Food Safety Recall: Country Herbs (Courtland, ON) recalls Country Herbs brand and Longo's brand Thai Basil (lot code 32277251), because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled Thai basil was distributed only in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Importers and retailers are recalling Ground Nutmeg, imported from the USA, because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled ground nutmeg was sold from bulk at three retail stores in the province of Ontario.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Ying Tai TCM Supplying Ltd. recalls Fat Burner No. 1 after Health Canada finds undeclared sildenafil and N,N-didesmethylsibutramine in the product. Sibutramine is no longer authorized for sale in Canada, and sildenafil is a prescription drug that should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner. The recalled products were supplied to five retailers in Victoria, BC and Calgary, AB.


Europe
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Carrefour recalls Carrefour Sélection brand fourme d'Ambert cheese (best before 25/12/2010), due to the presence of shiga-toxin producing E. coli O25:H11. The recalled product was sold by the slice between October 29th and November 30th, 2010.
  • Food Safety Recall (Italy): Apicoltura Brezzo srl recalls Cream of Asparagus (Crema di asparagi) in glass jars (Lot #2449 and 1619; expiry dates of 30/09/2010 and 16/06/2010, respectively), after learning of a suspected case of botulism intoxication.
  • Food Supplement Safety Recall (Denmark): Natural Resources recalls Pukka Weight Balance capsules (imported by The Natural Source) after excessive levels of iodine were found in the product. The imported supplement capsules were sold from health food shops, from individual practitioners and from Sticks 'n sushi restaurants.
  • Medical Device Recall (UK): Johnson & Johnson Vision Care (Ireland) recalls 1-Day Acuvue TruEye (narafilcon A) contact lenses (lot numbers with the first six digits within the ranges 492237 to 492498 inclusive and 502080 to 502269 inclusive), due to higher than expected levels of decanoic acid.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1636): Aflatoxins in brown basmati rice from India, via the United Kingdom; distributed to Denmark.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2010.1637): Salmonella typhimurium in corn gluten feed from France; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1638): Too high content of E 211 - sodium benzoate, undeclared colour E 122 - azorubine, E 330 - citric acid and E 296 - malic acid in and incorrect labelling on pomegranate concentrate from Spain; distributed to Greece.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2010.1639): Dioxins in calcium iodate pre-mix from India; distributed to Belgium and the Netherlands.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2010.1640): Too high content of salinomycin in complementary feed for poultry from Belgium; distributed to Belgium and France.

  • Food Safety Recall: Frontier Natural Products Co-op (Norway, IA) recalls two products manufactured with non-organic nutmeg, because the nutmeg, which was supplied by Mincing Overseas Spice Company may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products are Frontier Bulk Nutmeg Ground (16 oz; UPC 0-89836-00165-8; lot code 0306) and Whole Foods 365 Nutmeg Ground (1.92 oz glass bottle; UPC 0-99482-41931-8; lot code 0321). The recalled products were supplied to distributors, retailers and consumers in all 50 US states and in some parts of Canada.

This recall includes all best before dates up to and including December 1, 2010.
  • Food Safety Recall: Lantic Inc. recalls Rogers Golden Yellow Sugar, 2kg bags (Lot B0327; Costco item #12144), because of possible metal contamination. The recalled product was sold in Costco Warehouse stores in Kamloops and Kelowna on November 26th and 27th.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Hydrotek (Mirabel, QC) recalls various water control chemical products because the products are corrosive and do not meet the warning labeling and child-resistant closure requirements under Canadian law for this type of chemical.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert (Expanded): Pagen (Malmö, Sweden) expands its earlier recall of Pagen Good Shape and Pagen Cottages Good breads to include all expiration dates from 101027 to 101130 (Lot code 0300.xxxx to 0334.xxxx), due to the presence of undeclared peanuts. The recalled bread loaves were sold in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Denmark): SinoDane recalls a number of dietary supplements that contain unacceptable herbal ingredients that are known or suspected to have various adverse health effects. The recalled supplements were imported and marketed by SinoDane and were sold through alternative therapists throughout Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1632): Mercury in fresh tuna from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2010.1633): Salmonella Mbandaka in soy bean meal from Italy; distributed to Austria.
  • Consumer Product Safety Notification (EU #2010.1634): Migration of lead from decorated plates from China; distributed to Poland.

  • Cosmetics Products Alert (Saudi Arabia): The Saudi Food & Drug Authority has discovered an unlicensed factory, Markib Al Rafah Trading, which is involved in filling and packing 18 brands of cosmetic products, including hair oils, deodorants and incense. The Saudi FDA advises consumers to avoid the products listed on the agency web site (follow live link for the details).
