• Allergy Alert (Denmark): Santa Maria Denmark recalls Santa Maria Nacho Chips due to undeclared milk.
• Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Crowing A/S recalls Organic Minced Chicken, frozen (Produced by Hanegal A/S), due to pieces of plastic in one of the packages.
• Food Safety Recall (Denmark): KD Food ApS recalls Skagen Salad due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
• Horse Meat Recall (Greece): The Department of Rural Economy and Veterinary (southern sector) has ordered the recall of several products after undeclared horse meat (DNA) was detected in samples.
• Medical Device Safety Recall (UK and Ireland): LifeScan UK/Ireland recalls several OneTouch blood glucose meters, due to inaccurate display of extremely elevated blood glucose level readings.

• Allergy Alert (Hong Kong): Kofco Enterprise (Asia) Co. Ltd. recalls Mixed Soybean Paste, Sesame & Garlic (Manufactured by Daesang Corporation, Korea), due to undeclared peanuts.
• Food Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Nestle recalls Kit Kat Chunky Collection Giant Egg, as the chocolate waffle inside the egg may contain small pieces of plastic.
• Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health urges the public not to buy or consume a slimming product named “Conting Qianweisu Slimming Herbs Capsule" as it may contain undeclared and banned drug ingredients that are dangerous to health.

• OTC Pharmaceutical Recall: McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, recalls selected production lots of Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, Rolaids, Simply Sleep and St. Joseph Aspirin that may contain a chemical contaminant. The recalled items were distributed in the Americas, the United Arab Emirates, and Fiji.
• Allergy Alert: USDA posts updated retail consignee list for "Pepe's Gigante Louisiana Hot Sauce Flavored Cracklins," recalled several days ago due to the presence of undeclared milk protein.
• Food Safety Recall: Hines Nut Company recalls 270 packages of Pine Nuts, packaged under the brand name Harris Teeter Farmers Market. The Pine Nuts were purchased from Red River Foods in Camarillo, CA, and have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The nuts were supplied only to Harris Teeter. Red River Foods is an importer of pine nuts from China, and operates a pine nut processing factory in Dalian, China.
• Food Safety Recall: PEO Chapter FO (Ashland, OR) recalls 75 - 1 lb packages of roasted hazelnuts, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The nuts were sold through the Victoria's and Strand's beauty salons in Ashland.
• Dietary Supplement Recall: MuscleMaster.com, Inc. recalls multiple production lots of seventeen dietary supplements due to FDA's concern that these products may contain steriods.
• Food Safety Recall: Parkers Farm, Inc. (Coon Rapids, MN) today expanded the previously announced recall of products to include all date codes because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Affected brands include Parkers Farm, Parkers, Happy Farms, Kroger, Central Markets, Dutch Farms, Crystal Farms, Heluva Good, Amish Classic, San Pablo, Century Resources, Block & Barrel, Cobblestone, Biery, and Dierks Waukesha. The recalled products were sold in retail stores nationwide.
• Food Safety Recall: Jerry Hayes Meats Inc. (Newark Valley, NY) recalls approximately 490 pounds of a beef carcass that may not have had the spinal column removed.
• Food Recall: Food City recalls Food City Fresh 2% Half Gallon Milk. No reason given for the recall.

Canada

• Personal Care Product Safety Recall: Importers Farah Impex (Toronto, ON) and Gagan Foods International (Vancouver, BC), recall all lots of Hesh Aritha Powder, a powder shampoo, because of bacterial contamination. The recalled shampoo, a product of India, was sold in retail stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and the Greater Toronto Area.

Europe

• Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.0041): Mercury in chilled swordfish fillets (Xiphias gladius) from Sri Lanka; distributed in Germany.
• Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.0042): Mercury in frozen blue shark (Prionace glauca) fillets from Spain; distributed in Italy.

Australia and New Zealand

• Allergy Alert: Dong Nam Trading recalls three Bravo brand ice cream products due to the presence of undeclared milk and peanuts. The recalled products were sold in Asian retail stores in New South Wales.

Asia, Africa & The Pacific

Parkers Farm Updates Recall To Include Private Label Foods

New Recall Notices on FDA and Minnesota Dept. of Agriculture Websites

Parkers Farm voluntarily recalled a substantial number of products late Friday afternoon, after the Minnesota Department of Agriculture detected Listeria monocytogenes in several of the Company's foods.

As I reported on the weekend, this recall included both Parkers, Parkers Farm and Kroger brand items. Parkers Farm has now updated its initial recall to encompass all of the following items:

• 16-ounce peanut butter in square plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including creamy, crunchy, honey creamy and honey crunchy varieties with sell-by dates between 11/14/2010 and 12/31/2010;
• 34-ounce peanut butter in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including creamy and crunchy varieties with sell-by dates between 8/11/2010 and 9/30/2010;
• 7-ounce bagel spreads in white plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including garden veggie, wild berry, strawberry, apple cinnamon, and honey walnut varieties with sell-by dates between 5/13/2010 and 6/30/2010;
• 14-ounce dips and spreads in square plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including jalapeno nacho, pimento and salsa con queso varieties with sell-by dates between 8/11/2010 and 9/30/2010;
• 8-ounce, 12 ounce and 16 ounce cold pack cheese in round or square plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including sharp cheddar, bacon, onion, smoked cheddar, Swiss almond, horseradish, garlic, port wine and Swiss and cheddar varieties with sell-by dates between 11/14/2010 and 12/31/2010; and
• 16-ounce salsa in square plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including hot, mild, garlic, black bean and fire-roasted varieties, with sell-by dates between 3/14/2010 and 4/30/2010.
• 16-ounce Happy Farms cold pack cheese in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including sharp cheddar, port wine and Swiss almond varieties, with sell-by dates between 11/24/2010 and 12/10/2010;
• 8-ounce Kroger cold pack cheese in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including sharp cheddar, port wine, and swiss almond varieties with sell-by dates between 11/18/2010 and 12/15/2010;
• 8-ounce Central Markets cold pack cheese in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including sharp cheddar, port wine, swiss almond and horseradish varieties with sell-by dates of 12/9/2010;
• 14-ounce Central Markets salsa con queso in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid) with sell-by date of 8/16/2010;
• 16-ounce Central Markets salsa in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including sharp cheddar, port wine, Swiss almond, horseradish varieties, with sell-by dates of 3/17/2010 through 3/24/2010; and
• 8-ounce Dutch Farms cold pack cheese in round plastic containers (tub with snap-on lid), including sharp cheddar, port wine, Swiss almond, horseradish and Swiss and Cheddar varieties, with sell-by dates between 11/16/2010 through 11/18/2010.

According to FDA, both Minnesota and Wisconsin have confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some finished product samples.

The recalled items were available nationwide – either under the Parkers Farm brand or one of the private label brands – in stores belonging to the following chains: Hy-Vee, Cub, Rainbow, Byerlys Lunds, Target, Whole Foods, Jewel, Dominicks, Marsh, Price Chopper, Shop Rite, Nash Finch, Sams Club, Costco and Safeway. Kroger, Price Chopper, ShopRite, and Walmart already have posted their own recall notices.

While food service distribution was not mentioned in the recall notices, consumers also should be aware that Parkers Farm supplies the food service industry.

Consumers who purchased the recalled products should return them to the store for a full refund. DO NOT take a chance with any of the items described above. Although no associated illnesses have been reported so far, Listeria monocytogenes can cause a deadly infection insusceptible individuals. And pregnant women who contract an infection with this pathogen are at risk of miscarriage or stillbirth.

Listeria monocytogenes has a long incubation period – as long as 70 days, in some cases. If you have consumed one of the recalled products within the last two months and you are feeling unwell, please consult a doctor.

• Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.0022): High content of iodine (31000 µg/L) in soy milk product from Japan, dispatched from Australia; distributed in Cyprus, Germany, Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom. This is part of the international Bonsoy Soy Milk food safety alerts and recalls.
• Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.0023): Salmonella infantis in munchmallows from Serbia; distributed in Slovenia.
• Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.0024): High content of sulphite (749 mg/kg - ppm) in candied pears with raw material from China; distributed in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

• Food Safety Recall: The Kroger Co. recalls Kroger Port Wine Cold Pack Cheese Food (8 oz), Kroger Sharp Cheddar Cold Pack Cheese Food (8 oz), and Kroger Swiss Almond Cold Pack Cheese Food (8 oz), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were sold in Kroger stores in many states (follow live link for details), as well as in Dillons, Jay C and Shelbyville stores. This recall may be related to the Parker Farms recall, listed above.
• Food Safety Recall: Giant Eagle recalls several Giant Eagle and Food Club hash brown potato products, due to bacterial contamination. This is the third recall of private label hash brown potato products in recent days. Earlier recalls were announced by Food City and ShopRite. The ShopRite announcement mentioned Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
• FDA Enforcement Action: FDA files consent decree of permanent injunction against Congressional Seafood Company Inc. (Jessup, MD) for continued failure to comply with Seafood HACCP regulations under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The injunction bars the company and three of its executives from processing and shipping fish and seafood until FDA determines that it is in full compliance with all provisions of the Act and Regulations.

Canada

• Allergy Alert: Denise Cornellier Traiteur Inc. (Montréal, QC) recalls Cornellier Traiteur brand chicken & vegetable pâté, Glenkinchie chocolate sauce and seafood cassolette, due to the presence of undeclared eggs, soy protein and/or sulfites. All products purchased up to and including January 8, 2010 are included in this advisory.

(Chicago, IL) recalls its Elf Branded Herring in Sour Cream product distributed in retail stores in California, Texas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin because the product contains undeclared wheat.

Canada

• Food Safety Recall: NutriSystem Canada ULC recalls certain Nutrisystem brand Peanut Butter Granola Bars (Canadian version) described below because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The 40 g packages bearing UPC 6 32674 37016 7 and lot code TC05219B (product of USA) were sold exclusively through the Canadian NutriSystem website, by telephone (1-877-368-8446), and via the Shopping Channel.
• Dietary Supplement Recall: Health Canada is warning consumers not to use Herblex "Once More", an unauthorized product promoted to enhance male sexual performance, as this product was found to contain sildenafil, a prescription medication not indicated on the label. The product also was found to be contaminated with high levels of mold and bacteria.

• Food Safety Notification (EU #2009.1624): Presence of bacterial inhibitor in raw milk from Hungary; distributed in Italy
• Food Safety Notification (EU #2009.1627): 3-monochlor-1,2-propanediol (industrial contaminant) in naturally brewed soy sauce from Malaysia; distributed in Iceland, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom
• Food Safety Notification (EU #2009.1632): Mercury in blue shark (Prionace glauca) from Spain; distributed in Italy

• Food Safety Recall: Peregrina Cheese Corporation (Brooklyn, NY) recalls all products manufactured in its Brooklyn, NY plant from March 17, 2009 to the present because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was initiated under a consent decree between FDA and Peregrina.

Canada

• Food Safety Recall: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume Pidy brand Pur Mamba (peanut butter-piment) described below because the product, which was imported from Haiti, may be contaminated with aflatoxin.

Australia & New Zealand

• Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Talleys Group recalls Value Fries 2kg Hash Browns (Best Before 5 June 2011) and Pams 750g Triangle Hash Browns (Best Before 17 April 2011) that may be contaminated with metal fragments. The recalled products were sold in retail grocery outlets throughout New Zealand.

Europe

• Food Safety Recall (UK): The Food Standards Agency advises that Active brand peanut butter, Active brand groundnut paste and peanut butter made by Jesu Aka Ltd contain excessive aflatoxin and should not be consumed. The peanut products, manufactured in Ghana and imported into the UK by Mardoro Ltd., are sold mainly in food stores that sell African or African-Caribbean foods. Enforcement officers have been instructed to visit stores in their area that may be selling these products and ensure that the products are removed from sale. Aflatoxin is a natural toxin produced by the fungus Aspergillus flavus.

Australia, New Zealand & the Pacific

• Allergy Alert (Australia and Guam): Cadbury recalls one date code of Cadbury Old Gold Dark Chocolate 70% Cocoa, due to the presence of undeclared milk.
• Mislabeled Product Alert (New Zealand): Armenian Imports Limited (trading as Super Juice) recalls Yan brand fruit juice products, after independent lab tests show that the products – labeled as '100% juice' – contain little or no fruit
• Prosecution of Juice Company (New Zealand): The Commerce Commission advises that it will institute prosecution of Brownlie Brothers Limited (trading as Simply Squeezed), a juice manufacturing and distribution company for alleged breaches of the Fair Trading Act in relation to a television advertising campaign that ran from March to May 2008 for Simply Squeezed Chilled Orange Juice.

Latin America & Caribbean

• Consumer Alert (Guyana): The Government Analyst Food and Drug Department advises consumers to avoid purchasing certain Cadbury chocolate bars, specifically the fruit and nut and whole nut ones displaying the expiry date July 2009 and batch numbers L8017-DA1-17:22 and L8038DC1-14:25. The specified bars were found to be worm-infested and tainted, possibly due to substandard materials and/or improper storage conditions.
