United States
  • Food Safety Recall: Bavan Food Company (Sacramento, CA) recalls Bavan Brand Sugar Rewari (Santra Goli) Candy (10.5-oz plastic bag; Product of India), due to unacceptable levels of lead. The recalled product was distributed in California.


Europe
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert Update (France): France orders the recall of Thompson & Morgan brand Fenugreek, Mustard and Arugula seeds for sprouting, because the seeds are implicated in an outbreak of 16 E. coli O104:H4 illnesses (8 cases of bloody diarrhea and 8 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome) in the Bordeaux region. The outbreak strain is the same strain as the German outbreak strain, which - as of June 28th - comprises 4,022 cases of HUS and EHEC in 16 countries (including 47 deaths in Germany and one death in Sweden). The European CDC and European Food Safety Authority report that traceback investigations point to fenugreek seeds from Egypt as the likely source of both outbreaks. The seeds were imported into Germany by AGA SAAT GmbH (Dusseldorf) which, in turn, supplied seeds to Thompson & Morgan. The European CDC and individual government agencies in Europe and elsewhere, are strongly urging consumers to avoid eating all uncooked sprouts.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Welfore Co. Ltd, in response to instruction from the Department of Health, recalls Welfore Senna Forte Tab 17mg, Wei Health Strong Senna Tab 17mg, Legend Senna Extra Tab 17mg, and Senna Forte Tab 17mg (Product of USA), after a sample fails the disintegration test.

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating two suspected food poisoning outbreaks affecting a total of nine people. One group, consisting of two people became ill after dining at a restaurant in Jordan on June 19th. The second group, consisting of seven people became ill after dining at the same restaurant on June 25th. All of the victims complained of abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fever and nausea/vomiting.

  • Outbreak Alert (Taiwan): A 4-year-old boy is in intensive care in a Kaohsiung City hospital after developing symptoms of botulism. Lab tests of the boys serum sample confirmed botulinum Type A toxin; tests of food samples are in progress. This is the third case of botulism reported in Taiwan so far this year. Taiwan CDC reminds the public that any homemade pickled products or vacuum-packaged food should be boiled for 10 minutes prior to consumption in order to inactivate any botulinum toxin that may be present in the food.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Inghams Enterprise Pty Ltd. recalls Brannans Marinated Whole Chicken (All weights; Use by 27.06.11 to 05.07.11, inclusive), due to the presence of undeclared soy, oat, fish, sesame seeds and sulphite. The recalled poultry products were sold exclusively through Aldi stores in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): McCain Foods recalls McCain Family Pizza Cheese & Bacon frozen pizza (500g cardboard box; Best before Mar 2012 B 090 and Mar 2012 C 090), because the food may be contaminated with metal pieces. The recalled frozen pizzas were distributed nationally to Coles (including Coles online and BiLo), Woolworths/Safeway, Franklins and Independent stores, including IGA and Foodland.

United States
  • Harrisburg, PA. November 5th: The Pennsylvania Department of Health advises consumers who purchased Baugher's apple cider from The Lion Potter in Gettysburg (Adams County) to discard the product immediately, because the cider may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The cider was recalled by Baugher's Orchard & Farm of Westminster, MD after it was named in an ongoing investigation into a cluster of seven infections. Three of the victims were hospitalized. No residents of Pennsylvania have reported illness after consuming the implicated cider.
  • Lakeland, FL. November 9th: Publix Super Markets is issuing a voluntary advisory regarding the proper handling procedures for the defrosting of Publix Premium Certified Beef. The company advises customers to remove the product from the original packaging and placing the product in a microwave-safe plate for thawing. Failure to remove product from original packaging may cause microwave to spark.


Canada
  • Hamilton, ON. November 8th: St Joseph's Hospital has reported that two more elderly patients who were infected with Clostridium difficile have died, bringing the total to four deaths since the beginning of the current outbreak. At present, the hospital has 17 patients with hospital-associated C. difficile infections, and three who became infected outside of the hospital. All of the infected patients are in isolation.


Europe
  • Tbilisi, Georgia (Russia). November 8th: One person is undergoing treatment for botulism after consuming home-canned food.
  • Kharkov, Russia. November 9th: Seventy Air Force cadets at Kharkov University have been quarantined after complaining of food poisoning symptoms. Fifteen of the cadets are being treated in hospital.
  • Denmark. November 9th: The Food Administration warns consumers against using Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS). These products, which are no longer marketed on Danish websites, can contain a very strong solution of sodium chlorite which may cause serious side effects.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Singapore. November 8th: The Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Environment Agency are investigating a food poisoning outbreak at the Singapore Sports School. MOH has been notified of 106 cases, all of whom have recovered. The school canteen is run by ISS Catering Services, which is now under investigation. A total of 38 food samples and 10 environmental swabs have been submitted for lab analysis. In addition, 15 food handers are being screened for food-borne pathogens.
  • Katanga, Congo. November 8th: Cholera has killed about 10 people in the region since August. In most cases, the deaths have been blamed on a lack of safe, potable water.
  • Taiwan. November 9th: The Taipei City Department of Health warns that some 86% of cosmetics and drugs sold online are illegal and violate health standards.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Australia. November 9th: More than 150 people have joined a class action suit against Spiral Foods, the distributor of Bonsoy soy milk. Bonsoy recalled its product in December 2009 after it was found to contain excessive levels of iodine, due to the use of a natural seaweed ingredient in the soy milk. Regular users of Bonsoy soy milk developed symptoms of thyroid dysfunction, including rapid heart rate, hair loss, fatigue and joint pain. A reformulated Bonsoy product (minus seaweed) was reintroduced to the Australian market after approval by Food Standards Australia.


Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Port-au-Prince, Haiti. November 9th: The first case of cholera in the capital city of Port-au-Prince – a three-year old boy who had not traveled outside of the city – was confirmed today by health authorities. The outbreak has killed at least 544 people and sickened 8,138.

United States
  • Food Safety Alert: New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker warns consumers not to eat "Salted Holland Herring" sold by Brighton Bazaar Inc. (1007 Brighton Beach Avenue, Brooklyn, NY), because the product was found to be uneviscerated. The "Salted Holland Herring" was sold from the above retail store to consumers in the New York City Metro area. The product was offered for sale as a bulk item in the seafood cooler. The product is uncoded and is a product of Russia.
  • Food Recall: Dulces De La Rosa recalls De La Rosa Super Giant Marshmallows (Lot codes 179102, 179103, 181102, 182102 and 183103), sold at Buehler's retail stores, because of minor traces of mold growth.
  • Food Recall: Food City advises its customers that John Morrell Off The Bone Honey Ham, 9 oz tub has been recalled. No details have been provided.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Tropical Bakery Wholesale (Hialeah, FL) that a May/June 2010 inspection of the company's bakery revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Human Food (CGMP) regulations.


Europe
  • Food Safety Recall (Luxembourg): Alpro Comm. VA/SCA recalls Alpro LIGHT 1L carrying the product number 80000484 (production codes A360815.42 through A360816.27; expiration date 6/6/2011), because of an off-color, caused by the erroneous use of a cleaning product. The recalled beverage was distributed only in Colruyt stores.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): M&K Polish Goods Ltd., Donney European Ltd., Expo Foods (Midlands) Ltd. and Food Art UK Ltd. recall all batches of Sokolów Home Black Pudding Sausage, because the product is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The product is also sold under the name Grill Black Pudding Sausage.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Inco Kød Aut. 2766 recalls minced pork and minced pork and veal products marked with packing date 18-10-2010, because Salmonella was found in the minced pork.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Dansk Supermarked recalls Smokehouse smoked pork tenderloin, 350g (produced in Poland; package dates October 16 and October 17, 2010; best before November 15 and November 16, 2010), because the product is contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Dansk Supermarked Indkøb recalls Luxury Green Bærsymfoni frozen fruit mixture, 350g (produced by Crop's NV of Belgium; Best before 03-06-2012), because small stones were found in some bags.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1447): Cadmium in whole baby octopus from Vietnam; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1449): Too high total content of colours E 132 - indigotine / indigo carmine and of colour E 133 - Brilliant Blue FCF in food supplement for sportsmen from the United States via Hungary; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1450): Presence of poisonous mushrooms (several kinds of amanitas and clavaria) in dried ceps from China; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1451): Suspicion of unauthorised placing on the market of meat from Germany; distributed to Poland.


Australia and New Zealand
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Sumabe Holdings Pty Ltd recalls Sumabe Acai Berry Coffee weight loss beverage (200g cardboard box containing 20 x 10g individual coffee sachets; best before date 27/01/2012), because the product contains sibutramine, a non-compliant prescription medication. The recalled product, which was imported from China, was sold in health food stores, cafes, beauty salons and over the internet in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, West Australia and Tasmania.

United States
  • Allergy Alert: The Pictsweet Company recalls Pictsweet Breaded Okra, 32 oz. bag (Production codes 1400B, 1550B, 1660B, 1730B, 1870B, 2030B, 2350B and 2500B), because the product contains an undeclared milk component in the breading. The recalled product was sold in Food Lion, Harvey's, Reids, Bottom Dollar Food, Bloom and Super1Foods stores and may also have been available in other grocery stores.
  • Food Safety Alert: New York State Agriculture Commissioner warns consumers not to eat Dried Vobla Fish (Astrakhanskaya) sold by Ocean Side Pharmacy Inc. (Brooklyn, NY), because the product was found to be uneviscerated. The Dried Vobla Fish (Astrakhanskaya) was sold from the above retail store to consumers in the NYC Metro area and to two wholesale accounts, one in California and one in Massachusetts. The product was offered for sale at ambient temperature as an unpackaged, uncoded, bulk item. Uneviscerated processed fish is prohibited in New York state because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish has been linked to botulism outbreaks in the past.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Goddess Gourmet (Toronto, ON) recalls M-Bar brand Organic Chocolate-Coconut Bars (70g bar; UPC 0 99999 11001 2; Best before dates NOV-25 and DEC-7), because the product contains peanuts which are not declared on the label. The affected product was distributed in the Greater Toronto Area (Ontario). One allergic reaction has been reported in association with the recalled product.

United States
  • Lincoln County, OR. September 15th: A public health advisory has been issued for ocean waters at D River State Park Beach in Lincoln County, due to higher than normal levels of bacteria.
  • Elizabeth City, NC. September 15th: State environmental health officials issued a swimming advisory for the Pasquotank River for both Camden and Pasquotank counties after 500,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the river because of the rupture of a 30-inch pipe.
  • Dimock, PA. September 16th: A private consulting firm says it found toxic chemicals in the drinking water of a Pennsylvania community already dealing with methane contamination from natural gas drilling.
  • San Diego County, CA. September 16th: The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) has issued a Boil Water Order and Public Notification for the Potrero County Park water system, effective immediately, because the drinking water system has tested positive for total coliform bacteria.
  • Flathead, MT. September 16th: A dog is near death due to liver failure after coming into contact with water in Middle Foy's Lake. The water probably was contaminated with toxic blue-green algae.
  • Apache, OK. September 16th: Schools were closed and authorities urged residents to boil water or use bottled water after a sample from one of the town's six wells tested positive for E. coli.
  • Steamboat Springs, CO. September 17th: County officials closed Sweet Pea Market and Café, revoking the restaurant's license, due to several health violations and public safety concerns. Among other infractions, food was stored beneath an unshielded sewer line in a basement walk-in cooler that had been installed without a permit.
  • Lincoln, NE. September 17th: The state has issued a health alert for toxic blue-green algae at Merritt Reservoir in Cherry County and Kirkman’s Cove near Humboldt. Alerts continue for Swan Creek Lake 5A near Tobias, Willow Creek Lake near Pierce and Red Willow Reservoir near McCook.


Europe
  • London, UK. September 16th: Health Protection Branch reports on a hepatitis A outbreak in an Orthodox Jewish community in London during July 2010. Two primary cases, imported from Israel, and three secondary cases triggered the immunization of more than 900 contacts using active hepatitis A vaccine to avert a wider outbreak.
  • Campania, Italy. September 16th: Two suspected cases of botulism are thought to be linked to the consumption of La Rossa - Broccoli alla napoletana FRIJARIELLI in olio di semi de girasole, packed in 1 Kg glass jars. The suspect food has been recalled by Mediterranea s.r.l.
  • Kazakhstan, Russia. September 17th: Seven people, including one university lecturer and students living in a university dorm have been hospitalized with acute intestinal infection. The university's dining hall has been closed.
  • United Kingdom. September 17th: Health Protection Agency and Health Protection Scotland report that an outbreak of Salmonella under investigation may be linked to raw bean sprouts. Fifty-six cases have been reported in England since the start of August and 15 cases in Scotland. The Food Standards Agency reminds consumers to cook bean sprouts thoroughly. The cases under investigation are definitely not related to a separate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium DT8, which has been linked to duck eggs.


Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • New Delhi, India. September 16th: A study carried out by the Centre for Science and Environment has revealed that most brands of honey sold in India contain varying amounts of antibiotics.
  • Beijing, China. September 16th: In a new crackdown on malefactors, China has warned that the worst offenders of food safety rules would get the death penalty. The government notice also promised harsher punishment for government officials who accept bribes and protect or ignore food safety offenders.
  • Henan, China. September 16th: More than 20 students at Henan University of Industry remain hospitalized with stomachaches, diarrhea and vomiting after eating dinner in the No. 1 students dining hall. Dozens of students were sent to local hospitals for checkups.
  • Pune, India. September 16th: The National Institute of Virology warns consumers that most water purifiers sold across India do not completely eliminate water-borne viruses, such as hepatitis E.
  • Bambang, Philippines. September 16th: Sixty-four children and 21 adults have been treated at the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Hospital for symptoms of acute food poisoning. The victims attended the medical, dental and surgical mission of Representative Carlos Padilla, organized to celebrate Padilla's 66th birthday. The pork meat served at the celebration is thought to be behind the outbreak.
  • Harare, Zimbabwe, September 16th: A pupil at Chishawasha Primary School died and several others fell ill following suspected food poisoning. The students were part of a group that went on a school trip to Masvingo.
  • Uvira, Congo. September 16th: More than 70 cases of cholera have been recorded in Uvira during August and September. One person, a resident of the village of Kibongo, has died.
  • Libreville, Gabon. September 17th: An outbreak of diarrhea and vomiting has broken out in the province of Ogooue. No deaths have been reported, and the number of affected people has not been released. The outbreak is suspected to be due to contaminated water in the Mvoung river.
  • Réunion (France). September 17th: Health authorities have received reports of five cases of hepatitis A in the last week. Three of the victims became ill while traveling; the other two were infected on Réunion. There have been 12 cases reported so far this year – roughly double the number during all of 2009.
  • Pakistan. September 17th: A Chinese rescue team has confirmed five cases of dysentery in the flood-devastated region.

United States
  • Food Safety Alert: New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today warned consumers not to eat “Eviscerated Dried Vobla” sold by International Food located at 1110 Pennsylvania Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11207, because the product was found to be uneviscerated and has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores, which can cause botulism. Consumers are warned not to consume the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled. The “Eviscerated Dried Vobla” was offered for sale in un-coded vacuum packaged polybags and sold in the New York City metropolitian area.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Advanced Muscle Science (Silver Springs, NV) recalls all Lot Codes of Arom-X, Arom-X UTT, Arom-XL, 4-AD, and Decavol, which are marketed as Natural Testosterone Boosters and Libido Enhancers. The products contain 1,4,6 etioallocholan-dione, also known as ATD, an aromatase inhibitor. These products are sold both individually and as part of promotional "Kits". Advanced Muscle Science is conducting this recall after being informed by representatives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that it is FDA's opinion that 1,4,6 etioallocholan-dione does not meet the definition of a dietary ingredient and therefore the product is in violation of provisions of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Fizogen Precision Technologies (Wellington, FL) recalls all Lot Codes of the company's dietary supplement product sold under the name Off Cycle II Hardcore which contains 3,17-keto-etiochol-triene (a synonym for ATD an aromatase inhibitor). Fizogen Precision Technologies is conducting this recall after being informed by representatives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that they do not believe 3,17-keto-etiochol-triene meets the definition of a dietary ingredient and therefore the product is in violation of provisions of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Genetic Edge Technologies (Phoenix, AZ) recalls 60 count bottles of ArimaDex, because it may contain an Aromatase Inhibitor.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: KiloSports Inc. (Phoenix, AZ) recalls 60 Count bottles of Clomed because it may contain an Aromatase Inhibitor.
  • Medical Device Safety Recall: Westmed, Inc. (Tucson, AZ) recalls 24,384 units of BagEasy Manual Resuscitation Devices. The select lots of the BagEasy device have been found to have a potential for disconnection at the retention ring of the patient port manifold. Disconnection causes the unit to be inoperable, which potentially could result in treatment delays while another unit is obtained or technician switches to a different method of resuscitation.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Nutrisoya Inc. (St.-Hyacinthe, QC) expands its August 6th recall of certain natur-a Glacé brand dairy-free frozen desserts (vanilla, strawberry and chocolate flavours) to include additional distribution information. The desserts – recalled because they contain undeclared milk – distributed in Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: CEC Entertainment, Inc. (Chuck E. Cheese) of Irving, Texas recalls Children's Light-Up Rings and Star Glasses. If crushed or pulled apart, the plastic casing on the light-up rings and star glasses can break apart and expose the button-sized batteries, which represent an ingestion hazard to children.


Europe
  • Allergy Alert: Lantmännen Cerealia recalls a number of AMO bread and cake mixes that are suspected of containing an undeclared allergen. The recalled products were sold in convenience stores, petrol stations and kiosks throughout Denmark. Some allergic reactions have been reported.
  • Food Safety Recall (Italy): Mediterranea s.r.l. recalls La Rossa Broccoli alla napoletana "Frijarielli" in sunflower seed oil (Lot #180510), preserved in 1 kg glass jars, after learning of two suspected cases of botulism related to the product.
  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Vassa Oy recalls Vaasan Tiikerikranssi products with best before date is 22/09/2010, because the products may contain pieces of metal. The recalled products were available for sale beginning Thursday, 16.09.2010 through Finland.
  • Food Safety Recall (United Kingdom): Morrisons recalls Morrisons Mini Coconut Bits (best before 6 October 2010) because the product may be contaminated with small pieces of thin metal.
  • Food Safety Recall (United Kingdom): Aldi Stores Ltd. recalls all batch and date codes of Aldi Stonemill Ground Coriander, 40g due to the possible presence of Salmonella. This is an expansion of an earlier recall.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1238): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled hake (Merluccius merluccius) from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2010.1239): Salmonella in ground coriander from Germany; distributed to Ireland and the United Kingdom.

United States
  • Allergy Alert: Setton International Foods, Inc. recalls limited quantities of its Fairway brand Energy Mix and its Setton Farms brand Total Energy Mix sold to select stores in NY and NJ because the products may contain peanuts and chocolate flavored chips not listed on the label.
  • Food Safety Recall: Rocky Mountain Natural Meats (Henderson, CO) recalls approximately 66,000 pounds of ground and tenderized steak bison products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Five confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 gastroenteritis in Colorado have been linked to this recalled meat. The recalled bison meats were produced between the dates of May 21, 2010 through May 27, 2010, and were distributed to retail establishments nationwide and food service distributors in Utah and Arizona. At least some of the meat was sold in the Kroger family of supermarkets, including Kroger, Ralphs, Smith's Food and Drug, King Soopers, City Market, Fry's Food, Dillons, Baker's, Gerbes, and Food4Less stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: Breese Hollow Dairy suspends raw milk sales after New York State Department of Agriculture finds Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter in a routine sample of milk. The suspension will be remain in force until the state resamples Breese Hollow Dairy's milk and indicates that the product is free of pathogens.
  • Pet Supplement Safety Recall: United Pet Group (Cincinnati, OH) expands its recent recall of its Pro-Pet Adult Daily Vitamin Supplement tablets for Dogs to include additional pet nutritional supplement products for dogs and cats due to possible Salmonella contamination. The affected products are identified with expiry dates in the range of 01/2013 to 06/2013, inclusive. The recalled products are sold nationally at various retailers under the following brands: Doctors Foster and Smith, Nature's Miracle, Petco, Excel, DDS, Pro-Pet, and PR Excel.   • Pet Food Safety Recall: Merrick Pet Care Inc. recalls Lot #10084TL7 of Beef Filet Squares for Dogs (10-ounce bags; Best by March 24, 2012,) because the dog treats could be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled dog treats were shipped to distributors and retailers throughout the U.S.


Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Juici Patties (Canada) (Est. 213; Scarborough, ON) recalls all lot codes of Juici Patties brand Jamaican Style Vegetable Patty (390 g packages containing 3 patties each; UPC 6 24819 20003 3), because the patties contain undeclared milk. The recalled Vegetable Patties were distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Choice Family Meats (Emerald Park, SK) recalls three Store Made Beef Jerky products (Chili Chipotle, Sweet Orange, and Jalepeno flavors; all "Packed On" dates up to and including 2010JL02), because they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled beef jerky products were sold only at Choice Family Meats, 320 Great Plains Road, Emerald Park, SK.


Europe
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Wm Morrison Supermarkets recalls Morrisons Fresh Strawberry Cheesecakes (2-pack; all date codes up to and including use by 2 July 2010), because the product may contain small pieces of plastic.
