Bits & Pieces: Metal Fragments in Safeway Powdered Milk

March 5, 2009

FDA has advised consumers that some packages of Safeway Non Fat Dry Milk may contain fragments of metal that could present a choking hazard. The milk powder was processed for Safeway by Marron Foods, who advised FDA that a piece of metal, dislodged from the processing equipment, may have landed in the milk powder.

The problem was discovered during routine maintenance of the equipment.

The recall extends to the following product, sold in Safeway Food stores across the United States.

  • Safeway Instant Non Fat Dry Milk (25.6 oz box): UPC #2113038511; Best Before code dates FEB-12, 10 55-343 043 and FEB-13, 10 55-343 044

Consumers should return the recalled boxes of milk powder to their Safeway Food store for a refund.
