United States
  • The Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Department of Health alert consumers to the risk of lead poisoning associated with eye-area cosmetics (e.g., pencils and eyeliners) called Surma (also known as Kohl or Kajal), a powdered eye area product manufactured and used in the Middle East, India, Pakistan and some parts of Africa.
  • The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has revoked the food processing license of Chu Minh Corp., which produces tofu and other soy products, after several inspections found on-going sanitation problems with the Seattle business.
  • CDC issues final update for its investigation of a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections linked to ground beef. The contaminated ground beef was linked to 22 illnesses (including 7 hospitalizations) in six states.
  • CDC is investigating an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea that sickened 118 passengers and 3 crew members on Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas during a February 25 to March 8, 2013 cruise.
  • CDC is investigating an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea that sickened 266 passengers and 10 crew members on Princess Cruises' Ruby Princess during a March 3-10, 2013 cruise.
  • Green Planet, Inc. (Riverside, CA) recalls Night Bullet after FDA finds that the product contains trace amounts of undeclared Sulfohydroxyhomosildenafil and Aminotadalafil.
  • Med Prep Consulting, Inc. (Tinton Falls, NJ) recalls all lots of all products compounded at its facility. The level of recall is to the user, that is, regional hospital pharmacies and related departments, and physician’s office practices. The recall resulted from the pharmacy being notified by a Connecticut hospital that it observed visible particulate contaminants in 50 ml bags of MAGNESIUM SULFATE 2GM IN DEXTROSE 5% IN WATER, 50ML FOR INJECTION intravenous solution confirmed to be mold.
  • Clinical Specialties recalls All Lots of All Sterile products repackaged and distributed by the pharmacy due to lack of sterility assurance.
  • Cargill's animal nutriton business recalls certain brands of its ruminant mineral products because they were deficient in vitamins A, D and E.
  • Diamond Pet Foods (Columbia, SC) recalls limited production codes of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Senior Cat Hairball Management Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Kitten Formula dry cat food, Diamond Naturals Kitten Formula dry cat food and 4health All Life Stages Cat Formula dry cat food. Tests conducted by the company indicated the products might have a low level of thiamine (Vitamin B1).
  • Steve's Real Foods (Murray, UT) recalls 5 lb. bags of Turducken Canine Diet – 8oz. Patties due to potential contamination of Salmonella.
  • Bravo! recalls 2 lb tubes of Bravo! Raw Food Diet Chicken Blend for Dogs and Cats, product code: 21-102, batch ID code 6 14 12, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Diggin' Your Dog™ withdraws Strippin' Chicks™ Pet Treats produced on 8-30-12 because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Natura Pet Products recalls specific lots of California Natural, Evo, Healthwise, and Innova dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet specialty retailers, and online in the United States, Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Costa Rica.
  • Jones Natural Chews Co. (Rockford, IL) recalls 245 boxes of Woofers (beef patties) because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Procter & Gamble withdraws certain lot codes of Iams Shakeables Turkey Dog Treats and Iams Shakeables Lamb Dog Treats due to potential for mold growth.

  • Natura Pet Products recalls specific lots of California Natural, Evo, Healthwise, and Innova dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet specialty retailers, and online in the United States, Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Costa Rica.

  • Australia: The Therapeutic Goods Administration has tested Paiyouji Natural Slimming Capsules and found that it contains the undeclared prescription substance sildenafil and the undeclared substance phenolphthalein which was previously used as an oral laxative, but is no longer available in Australia due to serious safety concerns.
  • Australia: The Victoria Department of Health is investigating a four-fold increase in Cryptosporidium notifications since January 2013. While initially focussed on metropolitan Melbourne, an increase in notifications is now affecting regional Victoria.
  • New Zealand: The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is warning that drought conditions in some parts of the country could lead to higher than usual levels of tutin in honey. Tutin is well known as a natural toxin in honey in some parts of New Zealand.
  • New Zealand: Hawke's Bay's water operators are checking the region's supplies for contamination of Cryptosporidium. The New Zealand Herald reports that 45 people have been diagnosed with the parasite over the past two months.

On January 26th, Michael Foods alerted its customers in the food service sector to a Class I recall of three lot codes of Papetti’s Brand hard-cooked eggs (sold in 25-lb tubs; Lot codes 1362W, 1363W, and 1364W; Use by dates of February 11th, 12th and 13th), after product testing revealed possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled eggs were supplied to foodservice distributors such as US Foods and Sysco. Even though the recall bore the highest risk classification (Class I) – and even though Michael Foods’ facility is under FDA jurisdiction – notice of the recall did not appear on the FDA Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts web page. The public became aware of this recall on January 27th, when 18th Street Deli Increcalled 118 pounds of Julienne salad products containing eggs that were included in the Michael Foods recall.

As has happened so often in recent years, the initial recall soon was expanded to include additional lot codes. On February 1st, Michael Foods announced the recall of hard-cooked eggs sold under six brand names (Columbia Valley Farms, GFS, Glenview Farms, Papetti’s, Silverbrook, and Wholesome Farms). The recall covered all 10- and 25-pound pails of hard-cooked eggs packed in brine bearing lot codes 1 LOT 1350W through 1 LOT 2025W (“1″ refers to the production line impacted by the recall; “W” identifies the eggs as coming from the Wakefield, NE production plant), and expiration dates ranging from 1/30/201 to 3/10/2012.

The eggs covered in the expanded recall, according to Michael Foods, were supplied to food distributors and manufacturers located in 34 states (AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NJ, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, WA, WI, and WV); none of the eggs were sold directly to retailers or consumers.

The company explained that the recall was expanded after “…a thorough investigation which indicated a specific repair project that took place in the packaging room as the likely source of the contamination.” In other words, once again, a company manufactured and has shipped a ready-to-eat product before ensuring that the production environment was microbiologically secure.

As a result of this “wing and a prayer” approach to food safety, several companies have been faced with initiating precautionary recalls. I certainly hope that Michael Foods’ liability insurer has deep enough pockets to cover the cost of all of these secondary recalls.

Most of the retail-level recalls triggered by the distribution of contaminated hard-cooked eggs affect ready-to-eat salads and sandwiches. I have posted a separate page listing the recalled items announced so far, including information on their retail distribution. I shall be updating the recall list as I learn of additional items.

If you have purchased a salad or sandwich mentioned in any of these recalls, please discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Listeria monocytogenescan be a deadly illness, especially for the elderly, the very young, people with reduced immunity and pregnant women. Do not take a chance with your health or with the health of your family members.

  • Food Recall: Buehler's (Smith's) recalls 2% Milk (1/2 gallon containers; Lot code July 27), because the milk may have oxidized. This is not a safety issue, according to Buehler's.

  • FDA Enforcement Action: The US District Court for the Western District has granted FDA's motion for summary judgment and entered an order of permanent injunction against Rhody Dairy, LLC and its owner, after Rhody Dairy failed to administer drugs to animals with adequate control measures, such as keeping complete records to ensure that animals are not over-medicated or sent to slaughter too soon after treatment with animal drugs. According to the ruling, these practices constitute “insanitary conditions” that may render food harmful to health under the Act. Legal action was taken after FDA investigators documented the farm's unlawful practices during several inspections over the course of the past decade.

  • Allergy Alert (France): Société Dumortier recalls Bouton d'Or chez Intermarché Shallot Vinaigrette (Vinaigrette à Echalote), 500mL (Lot #L11126 S02; Best before 06/05/2012), due to the presence of undeclared mustard.

  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Sainsbury's recalls Taste the Difference Melting Middle 2 Smoked Haddock with Cheddar and Leek Fishcakes ( Use by 14 July 2011), because the product may be contaminated with small pieces of metal.

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert (Denmark): Romer Product recalls Romer Product Organic Tofu, 500g glass jar (Drained weight 200g; Best before 20/04-2014 and 10/05-2014), because the product may contain botulinum toxin.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): O. Kavli A/S recalls Sunsweet prunes (400g bag; Best before October 2012), because some of the prunes have fermented.

  • Food Safety Withdrawal (Norway): Nelson Garden withdraws Product Number 5665 Hot Mix Series Primo Vitamino seed mix for sprouting, because the seed mix contains fenugreek seeds that were imported from Egypt. The withdrawn seed mix was on the market since November 2010.

  • Outbreak Alert (UK): For the second time in a month, a ward at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry has been closed to new admissions due to an outbreak of Norovirus.

  • Outbreak Alert Update (France): The strain of E. coli O104:H4 that was behind the outbreak in Gironde (Bordeaux) has been determined to correspond genetically to the strain that was recovered during the German outbreak.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0988): Diarrhoeic Shellfish Poisoning toxins in chilled mussels from the United Kingdom; distributed to France and the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0990): Formetanate in peppers from Turkey; distributed to Germany.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0991): Salmonella in liquid egg protein from Austria; distributed to Austria and Croatia.
